What's new

for PAF What a Mirage offeres that F-16/ JF 16 don't/ Can't/ Won't

Similarly Mirage III was more Strike and less of an Air Superiority fighter.

Not quite, the Mirage III was actually more Air Superiority than Strike. The Mirage V was developed exactly because Mirage III didn't quite cut it as a strike platform. There's that whole Israel story behind it as well. Pretty well documented.

Hailing from Sargodha area where most school boys dream of getting into PAF Public School and then on to the PAF; I have had a special interest in the Pakistan Airforce for a long time. Following is what I know about the history of PAF.

Since, until 1965 PAF’s frontline fleet was almost 100% of the US origin; the US arms embargo on India & Pakistan following the 1965 war, hurt PAF much more. It was then decided to find alternate avenues for acquiring military hardware. Russia was very close to India, Pakistan, therefore, turned towards China, France & Sweden.

India had a large number of Mig-21’ and the Israeli Mirage IIIs had badly mauled Egyptian Mig-21s in the 1967 conflict. It could be what prompted Pakistan to opt for the Mirage III from France while F-6s were acquired from China.

Since F-6 has short legs; Mirage IIIs were intended primarily for the deep strike-interdiction as well as for the reconnaissance. To the best of my info, the first package of Mirage III acquired in 1968 included 3 Mirage IIIRPs.

Mirage has done almost every role possible for a fighter for the PAF

1) Air Defence
2) Deep strike
3) Ground support
4) Anti-ship
5) Recce
6) Test bed for new weapons

It's time in PAF will soon come to an end, but pretty sure you will be able to place this amazing plane up there with the F-86 Sabre in terms of how it has served Pakistan

Everything comes to an end; they have served their time and with effort.
Between SAAF and PAF - we see a lot of parallel (minus US aircraft) - F-86s, Mirages, B57/Canberra etc; not to mention sanctions always at the helm.

They will be gone in due time you need to replace the fighter with thunder or another platform before dreaming of doing so. I think the most upgraded ones / night strike role might stay for a bit longer before being totally phased out of service only time shall tell they have served us well and still are.

Isnt that the whole point of FBW!
Mirage 3/5 predate that era so the design favors the low level flight profile but any new fighter can fly low to the ground thanks to millions of lines of code. Stability should not be an issue at all. That is why you can see Tornado fly nap of the earth at high speeds.
Not exactly.. FBW can mitigate aerodynamics but it cannot entirely eliminate airfoil and wingspan/form behavior at lower altitudes where the air is turbulent.

How come we weren't able to use our Mirages during Kargil? Poor Radar? Poor range? Or Lack of BVRs?
Kargil situation was like a foot in a mouth created by a silly, shallow, sick-minded general (Musharraf) without taking other services (or even the GoP) on board. On top of that, he never thought of the consequences (both tactical ond strategic ones). We were officially denying any military role in the conflict (we claimed it was a fighting between Indian military and Kashmiri freedom fighters) and Indians took full advantage of that. They used air force and bofors for pin point bombardment of our positions on mountain tops wreaking a havoc with our boys there. Since officially we were not involved, we couldn't do any thing other than being helpless spectators with our sons being slaughtered in front of our eyes. I mean same bofers were brought to the LoC pre/post 27/2 with much fanfare by Indians. But what we have done with those guns? We have turned them into fireballs and death zones. Did you ever hear any filthy Indian pig boasting of bofors post 27/2? Similarly they used M2K for pinpoint bombing during Kargil. But on 27/2, we kicked sh!t out of IAF a$$ (inluding their M2ks, MKIs, and much taunted Israeli upgraded Bisons) with impunity. That is where the leadership makes a difference. Kargil will be remembered as an episode where an Army Chief tied hands of his nation and threw it in front of hungry and filthy dogs.

Musharaf should have been thrown into jail for misadventure.

Hi,

Flying low and designed to fly low are two different things---.

Tornado is by default designed to fly low---due to its swept wings---.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the B-57s primarily tasked with deep strike until 1985? Reportedly, the Mirage IIIs were tasked with "tactical strikes" along with recce. From what I remember reading, the Mirage III didn't really have enough legs for deep strike sorties, as complained by the Israelis. The Mirage V came about exactly due to this when the Israelis suggested that the avionics behind the cockpit of the Mirage III be replaced with more fuel.

The Saudis have retired, and are in the process of retiring thier's. How would it do in PAF colors?

Since PAF is in the business of buying 2nd hand, just asking.
