Following Myanmar, Pakistan is Eager to Sell More JF-17s

Pakistani media sources have recently reported international interest in the Pakistani made, Chinese-designed JF-17s, specifically mentioned were to Sri-Lanka, Azerbaijanand Malaysia. The sale to Sri-Lanka was reported following Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s recent visit to Colombo. However, following stiff opposition from India, Colombo is likely to drop its plan to follow with the deal, that would have cost $400 million. the Pakistani plane was considered as a replacement for the Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF) ageing fleet of Israeli Kfirs and MiG-27s. Pakistan had been pushing for the sale of 10 to 12 JF-17s, each priced about $35 million.

The JF-17 Thunder was designed and developed by the Chinese AVIC company to meet the Pakistani requirement for lightweight and affordable supersonic fighter jet. Is currently produced by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex for the Pakistani Air Force. The complex produced 16 JF-17 Block-II Thunder aircraft in 2015.


Myanmar was the first international buyer for the aircraft, placing an order for 16 Thunders in 2015. Pakistan’s President Mamnoon Hussain said recently thatAzerbaijan and Nigeria are both interested in buying the Pakistani jet. Pakistan has also discussed potential sales with Egypt and Malaysia, but Malaysia’s Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has denied his country was interested.

It was stupid to discuss with Malaysia about the deal but the Sri Lankan disappointment is still there... i don't think it will cause any strain on the relations neither should it but considering the fact that we provided arms that saved their future generations is i believe, not very well appreciated there... they could've of course bought them from elsewhere but at the risk of indian opposition and possible cancellation that would've cost their military and civies some precious lives...

People will buy when JF-17 will get more developed. You saw how many nations were interested when JF-17 went to block 1/2; several nations will buy once we advance to block 3.

With this kind of attitude countries are better off dealing with the western suppliers

I have to admit the same. Whilst I will always respect Sri Lanka, it is hard to hide the fact that their last minute withdrawal was disappointing, especially as it came on the back of Indian opposition, a country which has supported terrorism in their country.

We will still help them bro. Sri Lanka has been a time tested friends of ours and just because they didnt buy our plane doesnt mean we bear them any ill will. Hopefully they will realize though who their real enemies are.

In my opinion pak should push for modernization of this plane and catch up with it,s competitors so that our own air force can benefit well from it. I think selling our plane shouldn't be our foremost concern.. and what about j10 deal with China??
