Flammable Ice (Combustible Ice): Chinese Breakthrough Could Lead To Global Energy Revolution

It is very early days. Test drillings have so far taken place only in Canada and Japan, but the International Energy Agency, the western world’s energy watchdog, does not rule out the possibility of another energy revolution to rival that of the shale boom in North America.

The US Geological Survey estimates that gas hydrates worldwide are between 10 to 100 times as plentiful as US shale gas reserves.

Japan has set itself the target of bringing methane hydrates into the mainstream by the early 2020s. Despite the significant challenges, Mr Duerloo believes the world should not underestimate its dedication, inventiveness and willingness. “I think the chances they pull it off are more than half.”

  • Commercial development of the globe's huge reserves of a frozen fossil fuel known as "combustible ice" has moved closer to reality after Japan and China successfully extracted the material from the seafloor off their coastlines. But experts said Friday that large-scale production remains many years away — and if not done properly could flood the atmosphere with climate-changing greenhouse gases. Combustible ice is a frozen mixture of water and concentrated natural gas. Technically known as methane hydrate, it can be lit on fire in its frozen state and is believed to comprise one of the world's most abundant fossil fuels.
  • The official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that the fuel was successfully mined by a drilling rig operating in the South China Sea on Thursday. Chinese Minister of Land and Resources Jiang Daming declared the event a breakthrough moment heralding a potential "global energy revolution."
  • A drilling crew in Japan reported a similar successful operation two weeks earlier, on May 4 offshore the Shima Peninsula. For Japan, methane hydrate offers the chance to reduce its heavy reliance of imported fuels if it can tap into reserves off its coastline. In China, it could serve as a cleaner substitute for coal-burning power plants and steel factories that have polluted much of the country with lung-damaging smog.
  • Estimates of worldwide reserves range from 280 trillion cubic meters (10,000 trillion cubic feet) up to 2,800 trillion cubic meters (100,000 trillion cubic feet), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. By comparison, total worldwide production of natural gas was 3.5 billion cubic meters (124 billion cubic feet) in 2015, the most recent year available. That means methane hydrate reserves could meet global gas demands for 80 to 800 years at current consumption rates.

Yes I have similar opinion, though combustible ice is hydrocarbon in nature it's relatively cleaner, so it (perhaps shale as well) can serve as accountable supplementary resources to primary focus of renewable energy, electric vehicle.

China has such a huge amount of resources, if we take into consideration these natural gas hydrates, as well as China's massive reserves of shale gas and oil (1st and 3rd largest in the world respectively), China might return to being an energy exporter in the future like we were back in the 1980's.
These conbustible ice exists under most of the seafloor of offshore sea area around the world,which means the real demand for others is the drilling technology.
As the cost of natural gas hydrate drilling declines to the level cheap enough compared to oil drilling, the geopolitics of the world will evolve tremendously,cause the US may lose petroldollar , the key of US hegemony.
The progress of drilling technolgy is the real factor making me interested.It is a milestone of development of high-tech of China.
Additionally,it doesn't matter Who's the first of developing this tech, but China making it.
Dude, no need to make fun of any other nation. Let us just develop ourselves peacefully.

The beauty of this finding is that combustible ice is easily available and abundant in all ocean of the world, so that won't be a problem with everyone gaining access to their ocean. There won't be a competition for resources like fighting for oil in the middle-east. This become a question of technological superiority. Only those who can build and develop technology to extract them at the least cost will have the upper hand. China is in good hand.

Worldwide, methane hydrates occur primarily on the continental slopes. According to current estimates the largest deposits are located off Peru and the Arabian Peninsula.
