First Snowfall of the Season at My American Home!

.
No Toronto is pretty bad. A lot of guns are smuggled from usa into here and used for gang wars. We have hundreds of shooting a year

Gang wars? I thought gang problems in the US were the direct the result of hundreds of years of slavery leaving people unfairly impoverished, marginalized, and mentally stressed caused by historic oppression.

Toronto has lots of gang wars. Idk the reason but it’s mostly the poorer areas with minorities making up the majority. Those areas are neglected so the people start to get into drugs and then eventually gang wars. I live in probably the most dangerous neighbourhood in Toronto (Regent Park) we have shootings here like every 2 weeks.

Ah the brick public housing projects..just like the US

Seems you guys have the same issues...minus the slavery excuse.

If you don't mind me asking, I hope YOU don't pay the exaggerated $2000+/month rent for a bedroom apartment?

Aren't such housing called 'projects' in America?
When I was very new in America, working as part time pizza man, the store had a policy to not deliver in such housing places. Also, I was told to not call such places 'projects' because would offend people living there. Eventually I did go there once or twice for delivery and saw 3rd world like conditions.

Yep, known as "The Projects" and growing up in Boston I had two nearby that were just perpetual trouble. The local public High School was unsafe due to knifings and elementary schools were full of juvenile delinquents who didn't want to be there. Parents (like mine) who actually wanted their kids to get a good education so they could go to a nice college were forced to send their kids to other (mostly private) schools (or public Boston Latin where you need to take an entrance exam to get in so it keeps out most of the riff-raff). Plus the delinquent's parents were the I-don't-give-a-sh*t types who looked at school as simply free daycare and not a place of learning.

So I just looked at the current stats..even though this section of Boston is 70% white the high school is only 4%! That's pretty much summing it up.

I walked into the library for the first time in 40 years and it had metal detectors at the doors.

This is just a casual post. Thought to share to maybe lighten up the mood here some. Showing the first snowfall of the season which is happening today. Already about 3-3.5 inches of snow has fallen here and that's enough for those of us who live in the American Deep South. So far this year, the temp has fallen to as low as 23 F / -5 C, but I have seen as low as 4 F many years ago.

Surrounded by literally hundreds of acres of woodlands and hardly any neighbors, life is peaceful. It can get boring working from home. Sometimes I miss city life but city trips can be made every now and then. Pics show our little house in both sunny and snowy days. A 'Frog Pond' in the backyard which was frozen a few days ago--and certainly frozen again and covered with snow right now. It is great joy to sit in the sun and it is great joy to walk in the snow. The first sign of spring is usually wild daffodils blooming sometime in February. I know when summer has arrived when tiny frogs appear on the rim of the Frog Pond. Distinct sign of the Fall are the yellowing leaves on our fruit trees like peach, apple, apricot, plum, and pear. Winter starts when all the oak trees have their leaves completely fallen. I walk up and down our very long, shaded driveway every season and watch various trees changing their colors as required by Mother Nature. Snakes start appearing in April--but they are almost always harmless and I often just walk past them. I used to kill them and on one day alone some years ago I had killed four of them--I still regret that. So last year I just used jet from a garden hose to make one go away from the front of the house. My company is plenty of raccoons, squirrels, crows, and several kinds of birds. Also there are plenty of deer who take advantage of the safe environment near the house. But recently coyotes have been coming closer and closer to the house and their pack's View attachment 809168View attachment 809169View attachment 809170View attachment 809172View attachment 809173howling can be scary. Then there are more elusive foxes around; I have seen only 2-3 of them. Black bear sightings are also increasing, as the wild-life habitat is shrinking; one was spotted barely a mile from our house some months ago. They are generally afraid of people and go away but a sow with her cubs can be dangerous.

I really envy the life you are living. I desire such kind of a peacefuy life. I am a big nature lover and one day I dream to build my own warm and cozy log cabin in the wilderness.
The city lifestyle and all those nasty people we deal with makes our soul impure ,the opposite happens when we live a simple life in the nature it cleanses our soul.

No we pay much lower. My family lives in the “projects” so rent is super cheap when compared to the rest of the city since it’s government subsidized. My family are 1st Gen immigrants here who came with nothing so we’re still stuck in the projects but In Sha Allah one day we’ll make it out.
Also nowadays everyone calls them projects even people living in it so it’s not offensive anymore.

The government gentrified the area and just made it much worse. Now south side of Regent has good houses and building but higher rent while north side of Regent is all broken brick homes.

I had to go to the schools in my area because schools here follow a different system you can’t go to the one of your choice. As young as elementary school kids here are involved in gun violence and robbing teachers in fact there was a incident when I was in elementary school of kids stealing teachers keys and breaking into the school at night and stealing a lot of stuff. Middle school and high school it was pretty bad too. Even innocents living in the neighbourhood are killed often i would say 80% of shooting victims here are innocents at the wrong place and wrong time. The gang that “beefs” the area I live in openly brags about hitting innocents I’ll link the song if you want. They made killing innocents “cool” here now.

Same in the US. You are pretty much required to go the school in your neighborhood. However in Boston they had desegregated busing where they would shuffle kids all around so that kids from the inner city would theoretically have a better learning experience...but instead of busing the kids who really wanted that better experience they randomly picked people instead...who didn't want to be there.

The vegetation suggests you are somewhere close by me.

Oh boy! Didn't know South Carolina even had snow. Isn't this state just one state (Georgia) away from Florida?

You are talking about living alone, not living countryside. :)
South Carolina have ski places too btw

You are very lucky to have great parents.

Yes, it is peaceful for sure. But as I said above, I do miss the city sometimes. But not enough to move there. I agree with you about cities. I find big city people restless. There are several in my circle who live in medium to larger sized cities and to them my blowing leaves or climbing on the roof or even mowing the lawn are such hassles they would NEVER do such things. Their lives revolve around concerts and fancy dining. Such things don't appeal to me much. To each their own. I suggest if you really want a peaceful life then go for it! Even a trailer in the woods is better than a penthouse on Park Avenue / Manhattan (I actually say that to one of my dear city-loving friends! She disagrees, of course!).

Best of luck. 'Projects' are better than no shelter, especially in Canada's cold. We all have to start somewhere. Way back in the 90s, I was so poor that I would buy subsidized bowls of soups (I think 50 cents) at a public library in Vancouver and staying in a really rough neighborhood there. I briefly lived in Vancouver. I have been around! Circumstances are better now, of course. But not grand. Many years ago I had realized that a relentless pursuit of money was not worth it. We tend to look up--to compete against people richer than us. But I saw and still see people in America living off $1400 Social Security checks every month. That's low but people manage. In the end, we are all taken care of when we put in our effort! In the end, it all works out.
