First Snowfall of the Season at My American Home!

Toronto got a blizzard 2 days ago the whole city became a joke. Premier was out shovelling snow and rescuing people while highways were shut down and people stuck for hours.

I actually liked the big city life when on my own - but not with family. On your own you can manage between the madness and crime to enjoy that aura of hustle in a place like Chicago, NY(although I can’t stand the smell of it) or Miami.. but with family the priorities change

Small city life seems so much better and peaceful. I live in a big city Toronto in the downtown area it’s so noisy, congested and high crime rate. On top of all that cost of living is super high a 1 bed condo rent is close to $2500 per month 😂

$2500? Seriously?? Must be fancy property in the middle of everything and utilities included.
Also I thought Canadian cities are very safe and fun. In the 90s I stayed in a hostel in downtown Toronto--yup, those days of poverty and freedom. The city was very clean but the noise, the traffic and the tall buildings all around were dizzying to me.

Toronto is very expensive $2500 rent will get you a run down 1 bed condo unit in downtown. Average homes here cost $1 million +. Downtown is much more expensive.
Violence has sky rocketed in Toronto since the 90s I’m from Regent Park idk if you heard of that area before but it’s pretty violent and frequent shootings.

living in an area where it snows without 4 wheel drive is foolish. Buy a Subaru.

I don't think South Carolina is state where they have a lot of snow...Talk about bad luck, hit a deer again WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
Uphill is no no

Dont underestimate snow

You have to pay someone to clean/salt your driveway

I have to drive..as cardiologist i am on call and unforutantely most heart attack happen when people shovel snow

Talk about problems, just came back home, hit a deer again...Front bumper gone, one headlight gone, can't open the driver side door :( thank god no one get injured except for deer, and no air bags deployed. Bhai America mai Sadaqa kahan dete hai batao

Just wow!! Even with the high inflation and soaring real estate prices, that is too much. I'd never waste my money on rentals like that.

Doesn't HOA take care of cleaning/salting up the drivesways in several communities...unless you're living extremely rural. I've seen that in several mid-sized cities in the midwest. Being a cards guy, I wouldn't be surpirsed if you're in a rural place for the 💰

No depends upon state and situation

A big home manufacturer had a bunch of home designs in their catalog. We chose one of the smaller and cheaper ones. We had barely 6 months to have the house built and move in for some reasons. The manufacturer, once started, had the house done and ready to move in less than 3 months-- turnkey except for personal items/furniture and the fridge. Amazing efficiency! And there were no major cost escalations.
The house was built deep into the woods and for that we paid some extra price for water line, gravel and other things. To this day we can't get natural gas or fiber internet because of the cost to run them from the street to the house. But it was and still is well worth it!

Are you on septic? How did you get electricity out there? Are you on a generator?

Do you work from home somewhere or are you retired?

Yes. On septic. Power is here--though had to run a long line for that and I think had to pay extra. Same with the water line: Had to pay extra. The house is about 800 feet from the street, which itself is not very busy.
As I said above, the immediate surrounding has hundreds of wooded acres but there are a few houses in the neighborhood and there are small towns not too far. It would be foolish for me to live in total country like some of my friends/relatives do because I need good internet working from home. BUT... I have started to look for land more remote and thought I had found a 10 acre lot recently but it had issues.
Yes bro, thank God at least this time the insurance are actually paying for repairs instead of totalling the car... But seriously these Suicidal deer's are frustrating me a lot.

Won't 'totaling' be better? I mean you'd get a better deal from insurance??
Yes, deer are a menace here! And so coyotes are welcome! Even though the street I live on is mostly deserted most of the time, I drive VERY slowly on that because there are thick woods on either side of the street for miles and not much time to adjust to deer ramming into you!

This is just a casual post. Thought to share to maybe lighten up the mood here some. Showing the first snowfall of the season which is happening today. Already about 3-3.5 inches of snow has fallen here and that's enough for those of us who live in the American Deep South. So far this year, the temp has fallen to as low as 23 F / -5 C, but I have seen as low as 4 F many years ago.

Surrounded by literally hundreds of acres of woodlands and hardly any neighbors, life is peaceful. It can get boring working from home. Sometimes I miss city life but city trips can be made every now and then. Pics show our little house in both sunny and snowy days. A 'Frog Pond' in the backyard which was frozen a few days ago--and certainly frozen again and covered with snow right now. It is great joy to sit in the sun and it is great joy to walk in the snow. The first sign of spring is usually wild daffodils blooming sometime in February. I know when summer has arrived when tiny frogs appear on the rim of the Frog Pond. Distinct sign of the Fall are the yellowing leaves on our fruit trees like peach, apple, apricot, plum, and pear. Winter starts when all the oak trees have their leaves completely fallen. I walk up and down our very long, shaded driveway every season and watch various trees changing their colors as required by Mother Nature. Snakes start appearing in April--but they are almost always harmless and I often just walk past them. I used to kill them and on one day alone some years ago I had killed four of them--I still regret that. So last year I just used jet from a garden hose to make one go away from the front of the house. My company is plenty of raccoons, squirrels, crows, and several kinds of birds. Also there are plenty of deer who take advantage of the safe environment near the house. But recently coyotes have been coming closer and closer to the house and their pack's View attachment 809168View attachment 809169View attachment 809170View attachment 809172View attachment 809173howling can be scary. Then there are more elusive foxes around; I have seen only 2-3 of them. Black bear sightings are also increasing, as the wild-life habitat is shrinking; one was spotted barely a mile from our house some months ago. They are generally afraid of people and go away but a sow with her cubs can be dangerous.

@Hamartia Antidote : You like country life, so might find it interesting.

I miss northeast, DC, Virginia and Maryland area. No snow in Texas.

Northern TX has 36 degrees latitude. No snow?
But TX is becoming a big magnet for people fleeing CA.

Houston, Austin and Dallas. Toyota moved to Dallas.

Babar Ghauri is in Houston and another MQM ex-leader driving Uber in Virginia will probably end up in Texas.
