In a significant development in the ongoing Scorpene submarine project at the Mazgaon Docks Limited (MDL), the first of the six French vessels has been completely constructed and is now undergoing tests within the yard. As per the time-frame set by the Indian Navy and the shipbuilder, the deliveries should begin by September 2015, with one vessel released to the Navy every subsequent year.

According to an official privy to the development, the vessel has finished all “outfitting” of the protruding masts, antennas and the periscope on the “conning tower” and is undergoing checks for checking their functionality. “The piping, wiring and cabling work inside the boat is also done. We will now test all these by simulating underwater conditions where gases and liquids will be pumped through the pipes to see how everything is performing. The team handling the testing bit is working in full swing on this submarine while another team concerned with the internal work is engaged in the wiring and piping works on the other boats,” said the officer. Officials from DCNS of France — the original maker of the Scorpene submarines are also assisting the shipbuilders at MDL.

The Scorpene project, also called Project 75, remains one of the most embarrassingly delayed defence projects ever since it was signed with the French in 2005. With several missed deadlines owing to unforeseen technology and “equipment-related” issues, according to MDL officials, the vessels would still be “insufficient” to meet India’s underwater capabilities by the time all of them reach the Indian Navy by 2020.

This is primarily because the first four of the boats would be without the crucial air independent propulsion (AIP), thus qualifying them as regular “diesel-electric” — a system which has been discontinued by most international navies.

An AIP allows a submarine to remain submerged for weeks on end without the need to surface to recharge its batteries or sending up a “snorkelling pipe” which could give away its position.

Welcome news!
If ready in all regards, it should be about 12-15 months for formal induction of ship in IN fleet.
Hope others 5 too follow quickly, the program is already behind schedule.

. .
Wow... why it takes another 9 months to hand over it to the navy ???

.
Good development in deed..

Now navy is growing at the maximum speed.

Project 75i was also approved. Hopefully we ll do it correct this time.

can someone plz throw some light on bold part ??

The first four boats will be without the indigenously developed AIP system while the last two boats will have them.
This lack of AIP for the first four boats would reduce their capability to stay under water for long time.

So are we ever gonna fit AIPs in the first 4 subs?? why did we order them without AIP in the first place?? .
pakistani 80s subs are being fitted with AIP while our new goodies are in 2015 without AIPs.....Stupid decision

Project 75I is crap thing, Govt. should order a 6 more Scorpene with DCNS with MESMA AIP.

Scorpene is a great design. It is a very potent subs. India must have interate best fron India+ Israel+Russia+ France. This shall be an *** kicker for sure.

Scorpene with AIP shall be a highly potent sub. Lease couple of More Nuc Sub from Russia and Build 4 more Arihant+ 5 Scorpene are coming+ order or build the one like isreal order to Germany. It is ready to serve Israel. It will be a very potent boomer force in Indian ocean and shall f**K anything in Indian osean.

Only Agosta 90Bs have AIP and they were fitted after the final build. I believe only the third and final boat was built with AIP from the start.

These are complex machines.......it takes time to evaluate systems. The AIP for scorpenes would be probably fitted when they come in for a refit

Gentlemen, here we have the Indian clone of Nishan and AzadPakistan.

@Terriblr

scorpenes are shallow water diesel electric hunter killer sub, i guess it will be around Indian coastal waters, so snorkeling everyday has only less disadvantage.

that being said, it is known that scorpenes has enough space to fit in a small reactor.:partay:

except the dolphin class subs of Israel which India wont get, most of his assumptions are based on facts
please don't compare him to those grandiose deluders :D

Most likely because DRDO vetoed or at leasted lobbied in favour for their AIP development, but I agree it was a stupid decision and at least when the delays were evident, we should had ordered modules with the French AIP, that could had been integrated in India for the first 4 subs. Now the aim is most likely, to add AIP during the MLU, by cutting the sub in half, adding the new module and welding all together again, which offers risks of problems if the welding is not done properly.
