First Look At Futuristic Variant Of India's Tejas Fighter - Orca

Very unlikely....Jet engines are tough nuts to crack...India doesnot even produce small turbocharged sports car engines...Make a turbocharged inline four..and may be then the public will have confidence that India can crack jet engines

Well India did make some progress with the Kaveri, although was not wholly successful.
China finally was confident enough to put the WS-10A onto their J-11Bs back in 2009.
As this is a twin-engined jet a single engine failure need to be the loss of the fighter.

ORCA- Omni Role Combat Aircraft
This is a derivative of the TEDBF (Twin engine deck based fighter) that is currently under development by ADA for the IN. It is supposed to be a twin engine fighter and compete in the MMRCA class for which Rafale has been selected. MWF (Medium weight fighter) dubbed the Tejas MK-2 is separate since it’s a single engine jet and serve as a replacement to the MiG-21&27.

ORCA is solely being designed so that we don’t waste a ton of forex in procuring additional Rafales or Gripens or F-16s and also to reduce our dependency on foreign systems.

Folks who’re mocking that any development by India would take a century, Tejas project helped us create an aeronautical ecosystem which enabled setting up and establishing most labs and research facilities required for development. Again, I’m not saying we’d get this done in a jiffy but 10-15yrs is a good timeline for the development of this project.

But hey, it’s still better than painting a foreign jet in green and calling it a joint venture

Very tough to crack indeed. We're proud of developing Kaveri to a respectable thrust number on a peanut budget, but pride will get us nowhere. Engine development requires national project status. That's how all these "capitalism wins" defence companies started off.

India has passed a stage when it used to take a long time to get freeze the design of any fighter aircraft. Now India has lots of data, programs , simulater and wind tunnel in place so as the manpower with lots of experience in designing and RND. Any future aircraft project from now onwards will not be a difficult task at all for India. India has now developed World class tadars and electronic Warfare suit as well. India has designed excellent smart bombs , anti airfield weapons, air to air missile as well as standoff weapons. Now almost all building blocks of Technology in the field of air warfare are in place except the engine where some building blocks are missing. Once India overcome this problems, India will have a full-fledged ecosystem in place in the field of of aerial warfare. From here toward, future of India in this area looks very bright.
Then why r they worlds biggest importers of weapon system? do you think other are idiots?

Years back I used to read the engineering articles of famed motorcycle journalist Kevin Cameron...He said that discovery of materials for turbine blades came out of billions and billions of dolllars of govt funding..It was a chance discovery that vats/furnaces used for industrial chemical production can withstand very very high temperatures...I will post those series of articles on this thread as a pdf attachment next week...I mentioned turbos because the concept of turbos and jet turbines are kind of similiar

Well you have talk the talk now walk the walk and produce it in less than 5 years.

13 hardpoints, twin engine etc etc.
13 hardpoints sound normal. Mk1/Mk1A has 7+pod+gun=9. Mk2 has gun removed from ventral, plus 2 Wingtips, thus 10+pod+gun.

ORCA is TE and thus has wider fuselage and more thrust, so 12+pod+gun is right.

It looks very nice. If its going to take 10 years for induction then what is the point. Might aswell go for the 5th generation and invest all the resources.

ORCA project is being undertaken by HAL. AMCA 5th gen fighter is already in works and the final design has been frozen recently. Also, development of 5th gen is not the same as 4th gen since it requires a ton of research in sensor fusion, material composites, overall stealth.

Both ORCA and TEDBF are derivatives of the MFW single engine fighter which will replace the outgoing Migs where the MFW itself is a medium class version of the current Tejas LCA. Hence, the overall development phase and learning curve would be significantly less for the ORCA & TEDBF since most of the research and test facilities are already in place.

Not sure how IAF would go with the ORCA but IN unlike other defence arms is pro indigenous platforms and doesn’t change requirements in the last minute like that of IAF & IA. If you’ve been following IN inductions over the last 2 decades, pretty much all naval platforms have been designed by the naval design bureau and built in our shipyards.

You like getting embarrassed your tejas is shipped in one by one from like 50 nations I think only the coconuts are local.Heck even the truck it flies on in the slums off Mumbai is swedish talk about the irony

What are you smoking?
The engine making plan and work is there for as long as LCA is around .... that is only 50 years

Your engine developed with the help of French, USA and Russian exploded during test and that was pretty much it.

It provided poor thrust and was abandoned.

Later part of the Rafael deal involved letting French take over the engine project and let them develop Kevari engine. French refused saying this trash needs to be thrown in the garbage bin and they need to start from scratch.

so India approached American and bought engines for LCA.....

There is no active engine making in India going on and pretty much no one wants to develop for India ...
