First Indian C-130J In Full Colour

KC is the Indian Air Force serial for C-130J.

KC is usually the aircraft designation for US Tankers which does not apply to IAF.

US has aircrafts like KC-10,KC-130,KC-135 etc which are air refuel planes.

Why KC? The P8 that IN will get has only the I for India at the end of its designation right? So why should they use KC for India, the same designation they normally use for the tanker versions?

The Aircraft is C-130J and not KC-130. It is not a refueller but J version of C-130.

As mentioned KC is the serial designated by IAF for its C-130J.

That's not correct, J means improved version of the older C-130 and the KC-130J is the improved tanker version as you can see here:

What we get is even the 130 J-30 version, with extended lenght as you can see in Sudhirs last post. With the addition of the refuelling drogue system and additional fuel tanks, be it on the wings, or in the cabine, it should be used as a refueller too.

The KC-130J, like the standard C-130J, converts from normal lighting to night vision compatible lighting simply and easily, meaning greater safety during covert missions, night formation refueling and night tactical ground refueling. The aircraft also features an integrated radar warning receiver, missile warning system, infrared countermeasures system and a countermeasures dispensing system.

Will be interesting to see which version these really are.

However can C130J meant for transporting of troops can be altered to accomodate fuel?, I mean it has to be a tanker transport togather or either tanker and transport.

Hi Dash, there were news that IAF is interested in the tanker version of the C130J and without additional fuel tanks in the cabin, they can carry troops, or cargo just like any other C130J too.

Its simply C-130J which are intended for special ops and not the KC-130J refuellers.

In refuelling role the IAF has Il-78 and Su30MKI (with their buddy POD) while IAF is evaluating A-330MRTT or further Il-78's.

Ah now I get what you meant, I checked the designations of IL 76 and AN 32 and they also starts with "K".

No mate, J is just the designation for the improved version, not for special capabilities. C-130J = C-130, the one is the improved, the other the old version. KC-130J new tanker version = KC-130, old tanker version.

Yes I know that, but nothing meterialized, however what I want to know that we already have a separate deal for tanker. What Iam doubting that the C130Js will also have tanking capabilities....because they are only meant for speaciaal ops....

Of course they have not the tanker capacities of IL 78 MKI, or A330MRTTs if you meant that, but KC-130Js are not meant in comparison to them, more in addition. The bigger tankers can't refuel aircrafts with lower speeds, like helicopters and it seems, our forces are interested more and more in such special capabilities. Another clear benefit is the short take off capability of C130Js in general, because it means even as tankers, they don't need full fleged air fields to operate like the bigger tankers.

I don’t think that designation KC has anything to do with the refuelling capabilities of the aircraft or anything to do with KC tanker family of USAF. If you see the IAFs aircraft registrations, one can deduce that IAF uses initial K to indicate all its transport/VIP aircrafts......


Take a look at the pictures of IAFs An-32,Embraer EMB-135 BJ, Gulfstream III, A 50 EI, IL-76 MD etc, their tail numbers start with letter K followed by the numbers....So same goes for C-130s, it will again be letter K and C might be there to indicate C-130...hence KC


As far as for external fuel tanks between engines 1 and 2, and engines 3 and 4 in the picture, well these are merely for the long range and are a standard package for all C-130 models produced after 1960 ( B model ) and have nothing to do with air-air refuelling capablity.

C-130J Super Hercules, a major force multiplier, is ready for flight test, its American manufacturer Lockheed Martin said on Friday.

The Indian Air Force purchased six C-130J-30s in the early 2008 at a cost of $1.059 billion. The painting of the first of the six Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules has been completed at the company’s Marietta, Georgia, facility.

The aircraft, the world’s most advanced airlifter, will be delivered by the year-end, the company said.

The programme for India includes training of aircrew and maintenance technicians, spare parts, and ground support and test equipment.

Also included is India-unique operational equipment designed to increase Special Operations capabilities. The six C-130Js will give the Indian Army and Air Force new special operations capabilities.
