Iran has deployed Russian-supplied S-300 air defense systems at one of its military bases, the country’s defense minister announced. This apparently finalizes an almost decade-long saga surrounding the controversial shipment.
The long-range S-300 system was placed at Iran’s Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said as cited by the Tasnim news agency.

The general added that the domestically-produced Bavar-373 has characteristics similar to the S-300 and would be mass-produced later this year.

Earlier in April, Iran showed off several elements of the Russian surface-to-air complex during the National Army Day parade in Tehran.

Russia and Iran signed a contract for supply of S-300 systems in 2007, but Moscow canceled it after Iran was accused by several nations of clandestinely developing nuclear weapons.

The move was reportedly made under pressure from the US and Israel, which were concerned that Russian weapons would prevent a possible surprise airstrike on Iranian nuclear facilities. Moscow said at the time that the delivery of S-300 would upset the balance of power in the region and escalate tensions.

The contract was revived last year after significant progress had been made in nuclear talks between Iran and six leading world powers, including Russia. A deal that puts restraints on Iran’s ability to create a nuclear device, was later signed.

The version of the S-300 system supplied to Iran is more advanced than the one it paid for under the initial contract. In mid-April, Russia announced the shipment of the missiles had already started and that the deal would be fully closed before the end of the year.

I don't blame you, this is obscure stuff. You have to follow Iranian military achievements closely to know this.

In 2014, we saw a number of achievements which correlated strongly to evidence that the Bavar-373 is active and progressing.

The most obvious and significant one was this screen capture from an Iranian news service covering recent defence achievements:

It depicts 2 important things.

1 is the large white missile on the left, which can be just about distinguished through the blurry quality to spell "باور ۳۷۳" - Bavar 373. It is the Sayyad-4 missile, and looks similar to the Russian 48N6 series missile, a long range missile with a range of up to 250 km, capable of defeating all types of target, even with capability against ballistic missiles. This would likely comprise the long range component of the Bavar 373. This missile appears to be a very long range missile, and judging by it's size I wouldn't be surprised if it has a range of 250 km or more.

The same missile was paraded later on, this time with no mention of it's name, but it is obviously the same missile.

From this picture we could also find out that it is not just a copy of a 48N6 missile Iran may have illicitly procured. As observable in the picture of the 48N6 missile below, while the Iranian missile shares the same nose shape, it has a different fin assembly and a long line/tube running down the side.

Another important thing to note is the red missile in the same photo. It has not been reported as part of any other Iranian missile system, so it is assumed that it will form the mid-long range component of Bavar 373. Probably something around 150 km.

In another occasion we have seen this radar:

It has "باور ۳۷۳" - Bavar 373 written on it. It looks like a phased array type, similar to (but not derived from) the Russian 96L6E radar below.

Finally, we have numerous pictures of the Zoljanah 10×10 trucks, probably for carrying missile launch tubes, of which there are 2 variants:

And the Zafar 8x8 truck, which I showed earlier carrying the phased array radar.

It's highly unlikely the Russians helped us. They refused to sell the S-300 after all. That just shows that they were not willing to cooperate with Iran.

Even if they did want to sell us S-300 on time, they wouldn't help us with Bavar because that would be taking their own business.

That was probably one of the reasons. Once they saw it was only a matter of time before Iran got an S-300 equivalent system, they sold their S-300 quickly to get the $$$.

Good move.Much better than spending billions on a few a fancy aircraft's that would be sitting ducks to modern air defense missiles.

Iran should spend to expand it's navy, subsurface capability (large subs) in particular.
