I agree that we don't need another hostile neighbour, but to what extent should their gangsterish behaviour be accepted. If China or Myanmar told you , you can't build border checkposts in your own territory what would India's reaction be? And lo and behold, as soon as we start building the check post, firing out of nowhere begins. And these liars will say Pakistan started it! What interest do we have in problematizing the construction of this check post? Afghanistan unfortunately is behaving like a spoilt child who can't have the other kids toys, and to keep such kids in line you need to use the stick and the carrot.
I hope common sense prevails soon as this is a really shameful incident in the month of Ramadhan. All the keyboard warriors on both sides are having a field day on social media but its the poor people on both sides who will suffer the most. There should be dialogue and an immediate ceasfire and thorough investigation and stupid people who started this brought to justice.
The picture the Afghan media giving is that one of the Afghan border police went over to the Pakistani side to ask them to stop the work as they were not aware a gate was being built but the Pakistani side said they have orders from Islamabad to finish the work. Things got heated and the Afghan border police was either insulted or shot at whcih started the fight. Now this is the story from the Afghan media and might not be true at all.
The Pakistani side of the story is that the workers working on the gate were shot at without any provocation.
I know the anguish, but the key is root cause, why is that afghans would say something like that to Pakistan, the nation it depends on for all it's commodities. First make them aware of the leverages you hold, make the strategic alignment profitable to them, If the political and military class falls in line, foot soldiers will follow suit.
China and Myanmar did not have the best of relations with India, but we looked at root cause, and started the corrective actions, we gave the chinese access to Indian markets, they needed to grow, India provided a market, but controlled it in such a way that there will always be room for them to grow and that comes at a price of being non-hostile. Still we have some instances, but nothing major. With Myanmar, we built relations ground up, we built trade relations, military - military relations, and brought in our friends to invest and accept their regime to be on a reform course. We had to work on the goodwill and it's working. We could have squabbled on the symptoms that manifest bad relations, but instead we took corrective actions not to solve the issues, but calm them down as well as we could with leverages with China. This is just an example, our solution with china cannot be applied to Pak-Afghan issues, but the essence of the approach can be.
