What's new

Finally! India to Sign Rafale Deal by December! Draft Contract Prepared!

Nope. One of the great mysteries. Only educated guesses. News stories by India Today put it around $20 billion but the supposed counter offer by EF was about $17.5 billion (again supposedly). Hopefully that means any deal signed with the French would have hammered the price below that.
And there isn't a clarity about the configuration we will receive either. My guess is they'll work out some basic price and then start loading cost of weapon systems, various suites etc based on our requirement and availability. that makes the cost calculations far more complex.
Also i'm not sure how did they compare Rafale as a system with EFT.

I agree completely. This deal has been a mess. Very non-transparent/ complicated methods of costing. Personally, I think the French rip us off the most, the M2k upgradation deal is a classic testimony to that.

I wonder what Pakistan Air Force will come up as a response to this deal.

Upgraded J-10Bs or a customized PAF version of J-10C fighter aircraft will do.

At 270 Su-30MKIs, 126 Rafales, and hundreds of Mig-29s....Indian Air Force will definitely be a force to reckon with.

Pakistan, in comparison, will also have a massive air force with 80+ F-16s, 150+ JF-17 Thunders block II and block IIIs, and may be J-10Bs (as counter to Rafale deal)

As fifth generation fighter jets will enter subcontinent, it will become the most concentrated and contested battle-space for aerial warfare in 21st century....as I see no other area where such massive, sophisticated, and larger air forces have a very good chance to entering a larger scale destructive conflict..
As always, Paksitan will have what is required to defend their soil and air bases..But they can't build a force to carry out offensive strikes inside the Indian territory..Likewise, India can defend effectively against Chinese offense but can't carry out a strike inside their territory, atleast not very deep inside..
Hence the status quo will somewhat be like this till 2020 or so..

Safriz,
I'm sure you know that the IAF evaluated the F-16 block 60 and found it lacking for their needs. The F-16 block 52 is no match at all for newer fighters like EF, Rafale, or even the smaller Gripen-NG.

That doesn't mean that your F-16s will lose every time; it just means that the odds are heavily stacked against them, and in favour of the newer, MUCH MORE capable jets.

Now you could wish that fact away by singing the tired old song about how your pilots are so much better than ours, but that is merely a jingoistic bluster to excuse the inferiority of your equipment.

I somewhere read that "Rafale can also be used a ground attack aircraft/bomber" - is it really so? and can we replace our ageing jaguars and those MiG 23's with Rafale for they are to be phased out by 2020 - can it perform the task of a strategic bomber with the same potency?

Any multirole aircraft like F-16, JF-17, Eurofighter, Rafale, and Gripen etc can be used as ground-attack aircrafts...

Not "bombers" though.

Bombers are a big thing.

Saudi Arabia is getting the most sophisticated BVRs ever built with its Eurofighter deal (Meteor missiles. 350km range, ramjet engine :) )

Hope India gets some lethal weapons as well with Rafales

Rafale can carry 9 tons of bombs strapped on its under belly. So what do yo u think ?

It is designed as an omni role aircraft that can handle A2A and A2G missions with equal ease and that was successfully evaluated during the trials.

Well just make sure its real money this time and not monopoly french prefer cash

Russians are still not happy their payments were not made in time for the air craft carrier
