KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Suspected Filipino insurgents seized a Chinese tourist and a hotel receptionist from a dive resort in eastern Malaysia, and then fled on the speed boat they arrived in, Malaysian and Philippine officials said Thursday.

The kidnapping late Wednesday underscores the persistent security threats in Sabah state, a popular tourist destination and dive spot that is a short boat ride from the southern Philippines, which has long been home to a dangerous mix of Muslim militants and kidnap gangs.

It could also complicate already strained relations between China and Malaysia over Kuala Lumpur's hunt for a jetliner that disappeared March 8 with 153 Chinese citizens on board.

Six men armed with pistols raided the Singamata Reef Resort, according to a police report forwarded to The Associated Press by a security official. It said the Chinese victim was a 28-year-old woman from Shanghai, while the receptionist was a 40-year-old Philippine national.

The attackers were believed to be from the Abu Sayyaf, a Filipino militant Muslim group that has been implicated in seaborne kidnappings for ransom in the region before, said a Philippine intelligence official who didn't give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

uhh, the filipino militants you're complaining about are enemies of the filipino government and filipino people. in fact, they don't want to be called filipinos, that's why they're fighting in the first place. one of the victims was also a filipino

Kidnappers holding a Chinese tourist who was abducted from a resort on Malaysia's Borneo island have made a phone call to her family in China, a senior security official said Sunday.

He said the gunmen have communicated with the family of Gao Huayuan, 29, whom Philippine security forces believe is being held in Jolo island in the southern Philippines.

"They have made telephone contact with her family," Mohammad Mentek, director-general of the security command in the east of Malaysia's Sabah state, told AFP.

The Abu Sayyaf, a small band of militants infamous for kidnapping for ransom, are the prime suspects in Wednesday's abduction of the Chinese tourist and a Filipina resort worker, Marcy Dayawan, 40.

Mohammad said Malaysian authorities believe the two hostages are safe.

Mohammad declined to comment on whether the kidnappers had began ransom negotiations with the Chinese family.

Philippine authorities believe the kidnappers are affiliated with Abu Sayyaf "sub-commander" Murphy Ambang Ladjia, who was involved in a spectacular kidnapping of 21 people from another resort in Sabah -- in the north of Borneo island -- in 2000.

Twenty of those hostages -- many of whom were Europeans or other foreign tourists -- were released within five months, reportedly after hefty ransoms were paid.

A final Filipino captive was held until 2003.

Mohammad said security forces had strengthened their presence, with more sea patrols along the coastal waters of Sabah which are a major diving attraction for foreigners.

"But we are not able to be everywhere all the time since our sea borders with the Philippines are wide and porous," he said.

Let me guess another muslim terrorist group. Philipiness needs to be extremely harsh on muslims. Any such terrorist act must be met with reprisal on the families of terrorist.

Or the mynamar method could be used , where for every terrorist rohingya act, they throw out hundreds of rohingyas.

I have said before that the Philippine is a very dangerous place. I'm just glad we restrict tourism to that country.

You should restrict to travel inside your country too. It's much more dangerous with knife attacks

Kidnappers based in the southern Philippines have demanded $11.25 million in ransom for a Chinese tourist abducted from a Malaysian dive resort, a senior minister said Thursday.
