“You have 2,000 girls who are killed in the womb every day,” Maneka Gandhi told news channel NDTV in an interview. “Some are born and have pillows on their faces choking them.”
Female infanticide is a historic problem in India’s highly patriarchal society, as daughters are often viewed as a burden because of the continuing prevalence of the dowry system.
Although the 2011 census showed an increased parity in the country’s overall sex ratio, the child sex ratio was at an all-time low of 914 females for every 1,000 males.

A May 2011 study in British medical journal the Lancet found that around 12 million Indian girls were aborted since 1981, according to Reuters.
The new government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attempting to curb the issue through its Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) initiative launched in January, which aims to better enforce laws against prenatal sex determination and ensure access to education for girls.
There is already a marked increase in the number of girls being admitted to orphanages, a sign Gandhi says is somewhat heartening because it represents a transition from “being killed to being thrown out.”

Infact i have read somewhere they kill babi girls just for de sake of avoiding jaiaz in weddings. They feel having babies girl is disrespectful in their Hindu tradition. There was news that 123 villages in India did not had babi girlls since last 8 years

A temporary solution yes but unfortunately the government has been busy in inaugurating the construction of Hindu temples and building one tallest-statue-in-the-world of a British era so-called freedom fighter ( Vallabhbhai Patel ) who was a bit sympathetic to the Hindutvadi cause. There is also planned the next tallest statue for the Hindu god Ram and is expected to cost 300 million dollars. And other wasteful costs.

And then the Hindutvadi religious mobs are running amok throughout the country.

All this while groups within the Hindu religion are being oppressed : females, Lower Castes, farmers, peasants etc.

To speak about the topic of the OP I quote this article from 2012 which speaks of unethical doctors in one Western Indian town feeding aborted female fetuses to the stray dogs that they keep for this evil purpose :

Some doctors in Beed are disposing of female foetuses by feeding them to dogs in order to destroy evidence of female foeticide.

The shocking revelation was made by Varsha Deshpande of Lek Ladki Abhiyan, an NGO working against the practice.

Maharashtra's Public Health Minister Suresh Shetty also admitted he had heard of foetuses thrown to the dogs in Beed.

Deshpande's allegation is significant as Beed in Marathwada has the worst child sex ratio - 801 girls being born per 1,000 boys (2011 census) - in Maharashtra.

The low percentage of females is attributed to rampant female infanticide in the area.

Last Friday, Vijaymala Patekar (28), was admitted to Dr Sudam Munde's abortion clinic in Beed when she was six months pregnant. She had four daughters and did not want another. But while her pregnancy was being terminated, she died.

The police have arrested Munde and his wife, but Deshpande said the couple were held earlier too for the same offence and will go scot-free again because of their money power and influence.

"We don't want this case to be tried in Beed or Marathwada. Let the case be tried somewhere outside as they wield too much influence for the trial to be fair," she said.

Deshpande claimed her organisation had conducted a sting operation on the doctor in 2010, in which he openly talked about how he was aborting female foetuses and feeding them to his five dogs.

It was then that the police had arrested him, but he was released soon and continued with his activities.

"A person even saw a foetus being fed to the animals. This is known to everyone in Beed, but the police are not taking action as Munde is influential," Deshpande said.

She added that some other doctors in Beed kept dogs for the same purpose - to avoid the hassle of disposing of the bodies.

Health Minister Shetty said: "I have heard of the practice but have no evidence."

He added that since the local police seemed to be under a lot of "pressure", he had decided to ask the crime branch to investigate the latest case.

Substantiating Deshpande's account of the kind of clout enjoyed by Munde, Shetty said: "Our civil surgeon who had gone to investigate Munde's hospital was locked up in a room by some goons. They even abused her and asked her to go away."

The minister said the surgeon while trying to take action against such doctors had been facing threats for more than a year. "We have asked the home department to provide security for our staff," he said.

The woman minister in the OP, Maneka Gandhi, is rightly speaking about female foeticide but ironically she is the one responsible for the above feeding-fetuses-to-stray-dogs crime. In the late 1990s she was a "environment and animal welfare" minister in the BJP government of that time and she passed a law that banned the act by city authorities of catching stray dogs and eliminating them. The law also generally forbade "cruelty" to dogs. Any citizen found guilty about this can be potentially punished. But the result of this law is now the existence of 35+ million stray dogs in India ( plus many house dogs ). This has a few effects : attacks and killings of humans by dog attacks, almost extinction status of cats in India and imbibing of the dog's characteristics into human psychology ( cruelty, gang formations, noise, chaos and general criminality ). The last effect is why some doctors in Beed town above have no scruples in illegally aborting female foetuses and disposing them by feeding them to the stray / kept dogs. The article I quoted is from 2012 and the minister gave her statement three years later. She should have studied female abortion and seen her own role in it.

MH.Yang, you rightly mention the role of the dowry system as a direct cause of female infanticide / foeticide among Hindus. The other cause is the lowered status of women in Hindu society. These two come about because of the 3000-year-old extremely Capitalist, regressive and oppressive socio-economic system in India that was mainly defined in the evil book Manusmriti. The book also defines the deprived and subservient roles and positions of the Lower Caste Hindus ( Shudras, Dalits and the tribals ).

The existence of the dowry system makes parents who have borne girls to start saving money and reserve jewelry right from the girl's childhood so that this money, jewelry and other goods ( car, motorcycle, TV etc ) can be given to her groom's family during the wedding. And cultural elements are permeated ( wedding songs and rites which induce finality in the bride ) so that the bride sees this wedding as her final departure from her parents' house and she must never return there even if she faces violence and other problems in her marriage house. There is no concept of divorce in Hinduism. Though divorce was introduced for Hindus in India in 1955 ( through inspiration from Western laws who themselves were inspired from Islamic marriage law - please read this thread of mine ) divorce is still seen as taboo in much of Hindu society. The marriage is for seven lifetimes. The dowry system is also one of the elements responsible for farmers to commit suicide. They take loans for big wedding expenses, including dowry, and suffer crop failure and become indebtedness and suicide in not considered sin in Hindu society. But some parents who bear female infants or discover female foetus in the womb ( done through illegal ultrasound scan ) or the elder in-laws don't even want to bear the expenses of the female right from the start and kill the born female or the female in the womb.

The Hindutvadis claim that Hinduism is good yet don't see that their religion and practices have many wrongs. Hinduism has been stagnant and regresive in social, economic and political spheres for 3000 years. Hinduism must have a renaissance.

But since I speak of Hinduism I must mention one wonderful concept it it : Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ( meaning, The world is one family ). But this concept should mean that the Hindutvadis, the ardent champions of Hinduism, should ally with preachers of Communism which is also a pan-human ideology and with Islam and Christianity which are also pan-human ideologies.

To be honest, although I have never been to India, I don't believe that only Hinduism discriminates against women. Discrimination against women in India should be social.

When thinking about problems, a Communist should look for the main contradiction.
What is the main contradiction of women's status in India? The answer is: women lack sufficient economic conditions to support their status.

Therefore, if India wants to solve the problem of female discrimination, it should first improve women's education.

I don't know about now but this was the case in Pakistan too, specially in the southern Punjab area, I know this first hand as my mum was working there and personally helped 2 baby girls into adoption rather than being choked to death. This is in the 1980s, I know things have improved a lot now. A lot of India is still under immense poverty and while they place a lot of emphasis on educating their youth - it is going to take a long time.

People like the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, who is a Hindutvadi bigot and misogynist, they want the Manusmriti to replace the Indian Constitution. The "education" system here does not teach history and current affairs in truth form and does not teach the humanities a lot all of which makes them absorb a distorted and untrue view of India and the world and they find no reason to question the wrongs and have empathy with the oppressed. You should look at Twitter and Facebook feeds and see for yourself how such supposedly educated and economically-able women have utmost hatred for the Communists and the Muslims including for the women among these two groups.

1, When the right-wing party is in power, it is impossible to solve the problem of female discrimination.

2, Obligation education. It is not only the obligation of the government, but also the obligation of parents. No one can stop children of the right age from receiving education. In China, South Korea, North Korea and Japan, it is illegal to prevent children from receiving education, it will go to prison.

1. I am not religious in the ritualistic sense ( prayer, fasting, dress code, a certain grooming etc ) but I admire the progressivism, human rights and respect for other elements of Nature that Islam and the earliest Muslims brought ( like for cats and trees ). I will ask you to read this thread of mine whose OP is an article by Pakistani journalist Nadeem Paracha and is about some of the Socialist / Communist activism among Muslims from the early 1900s. It is a long read but quite interesting. It includes Islam scholars of a 100 years ago in undivided India finding similarity between Islam and Communism.

It is easier for some but yes the taboo still holds.

And sometimes the woman's parents do harm. There was a case some years ago in Bangalore city where a woman faced domestic problems including violence. She had children. She came away to her parents house but after some days they sent her back. IIRC she lodged a police complaint and then her parents conspired with her husband to declare her mentally unsound and had her admitted to a psychiatric asylum. The people there eventually found that she wasn't unsound at all and that she had being suffering troubles from her husband. They released her and I think she got into a women's shelter and found a lawyer to fight her case. This was in the newspapers. Her own parents were her enemies.
