St Sinner

I certainly do hope that you have recovered from your brief heart attack.

I posted this because I had seen it on Al-Jazeera as a special report, and my sole purpose for posting it was to serve as a gambit to encourage discussion.

Sadly such occurrences are not uncommon around some parts of the world, however to contrast it with a wife beating in turkey is fanatical.

10 million baby girls being aborted or killed after birth for the crime of being innocent girls is unparalleled throughout the rest of the world. This is a reality that you will have to embrace and dispose of into the pages of fiction.

Believe it or not, the Pagan Arabs over 1400 years ago used to burry their daughters alive prior the advent of Islam and the holy Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him.

The following verse of the Qur’an wa revealed:

6:151
Say: "Come, I will rehearse what Allah hath (really) prohibited you from": Join not anything as equal with Him; be good to your parents; kill not your children on a plea of want;- We provide sustenance for you and for them;- come not nigh to shameful deeds. Whether open or secret; take not life, which Allah hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom.

One of the first verses to be revealed in the Glorious Qur’an was entitled “At-Takwir” (the folding up), in which God warned that the crime of infanticide would be revealed and questioned on the day of reckoning:

Comparing a state level "Genocide" of infant/young girls with a man in turkey beating his wife, is quite ridiculous.

As fhassan said, we sincerely hope you have recovered from your heart attack. And no one here is 'Portraying' India 'Like this', the research was conducted by the help of Indian people, not PDF.

India targets female foeticide

Jill McGivering
BBC South Asia correspondent

The Indian Government has formalised legal powers to crack down on the abuse of pre-natal screening techniques as part of increasing efforts to curb female foeticide.

Figures have fallen to as low as fewer than eight girls for every 10 boys

The cultural preference for sons rather than daughters has skewed sex ratios in India.

In some states young men, reaching marriageable age, are finding it hard to find brides.

For many years, there have been reports of baby girls being neglected, malnourished or even killed at birth.

But the growing availability of pre-natal screening techniques has brought a new dimension to the problem.

Raids
In some of the worst-affected states, such as Punjab and Haryana, the proportion of baby girls is steadily declining.

Prejudice against girls runs deep
Instead of a natural birth ratio of slightly more girls than boys, figures have fallen to as low as fewer than eight girls for every 10 boys.

The authorities are starting to take action.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that sex selection clinics and the abortion of girls are still widespread.

But tougher legislation is making it possible for the authorities to crack down, staging raids on pre-natal clinics to check records and look for evidence of illegal sex selection.

Officials admit it is hard to find evidence.

Pre-natal scans to check for abnormalities are legal and it can be impossible to prove that a doctor has in fact used one to reveal a baby's sex.

Bride-buying
The long- term solution may be to change attitudes.

Girls are often seen as a burden because they have to be protected and need large sums of money for wedding dowries.

Some people say they need boys to carry on the family line, whereas girls leave to join their husband's families.

Others say a father needs a son to light his funeral pyre when he dies.

But in Haryana, some villages are starting to feel the long-term impact of their prejudice.

A whole generation of young men is reaching marriageable age only to find there is a shortage of brides.

This, in turn, is leading to a new practice - that of buying in young brides from poor families outside the state.

And what will they do when there's a shortage of brides in poor families?

Sex ratio shows positive change

NEW DELHI: The Annual Report on Registration of Births and Deaths in Delhi 2008 that was released on Tuesday reinforced the city government's
claims of a drastic improvement in the capital's sex ratio at birth from 848 females per 1,000 males in 2007 to 1,004 in 2008. While the ravings on Laadli continued, the scheme, if the report is to be believed, seems to be working with a distinct religious bias.

While the sex ratio at birth in Hindus and Muslims is 1,002 females per 1,000 males and 1,040 females per 1,000 males respectively, for Sikhs and Christians it is still languishing at 873 and 875, respectively. The figure is way below the acceptable international level of 952 females per 1,000 males and the national average of 933, according to the 2001 data. While officials explain the figures by saying that the number of Christian births in Delhi is too few, for Sikhs they admit that the largely prosperous community which is way outside the ambit of Laadli and notorious for its abhorrence for the girl child they cite the Punjab sex ratio as proof may not still have learnt to accept the birth of a girl.

There are also figures in the report which raise questions as to whether the dramatic improvement in sex ratio is actually an indication of a decrease in female feticide or simply underregistration of male births. In 2008, the number of girls born in institutions for every 1,000 boys was 915 but the same figure for home births stood at an astounding 1,303. Though chief secretary Rakesh Mehta is not willing to accept the hypothesis that there may be underregistration of male births "Parents of boys are usually very particular in these things'', is how he refutes it senior officials in Delhi government say 1,303 is too high a figure to be "natural''.

Explained a senior official: "Laadli in itself is an incentive to register girls. But there is no such incentive to register the birth of a boy child. There is also a chance that girls who were born elsewhere to fathers who are Delhi residents were registered here to take advantage of Laadli. These theories cannot be completely overruled because the only other explanation then would be that there is some amount of male feticide happening which is preposterous.'' Laadli, interestingly, has had just 23,706 registrations at birth in 2008 against an increase in 19,000 of the total number of girls born during the year.

The number of male children born in the city has incidentally gone down from 1.74 lakh in 2007 to 1.66 lakh in 2008. And the figure, somewhat surprisingly, has been constantly going down from 2005 when it stood at 1.78 lakh. The number of girls on the other hand has remained more or less constant over this period before registering a jump from 1.47 lakh in 2007 to 1.67 lakh in 2008.

Commenting on the difference in sex ratios across religions, Mehta though sounded distinctly concerned about the Sikh figures. "The figures are worrying because unlike Christians the number of Sikhs in Delhi would be substantial. Sikhs are prosperous, so Laadli which is for families with an annual income of less than Rs 1 lakh does not affect them. It would have to do with the Punjabi connection. See how bad the sex ratio of Punjab is. Moreover the census figures clearly showed how south Delhi which is home to so many rich Punjabis and Sikhs have one of the worst sex ratios. What one needs to do to address that mindset has to be thought about now.''

The figures also showed that more than 50% women become mothers before the age of 25 years and there is a distinct link between the level of education in women and the number of children they bear. While 42.53% of the fourth (or more) child were born to illiterate women, only 2% were born to graduates.

The death registration figures, on the other hand, show that more than 41% men die between the ages of 35 and 60 whereas the percentage of women of the same age group dying is about 31%. For a city that prides itself on its health infrastructure, a figure that may come as a shock is that the largest percentage (26.72%) of deaths occur due to causes which are not explained "symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings'' is how the report puts down the cause of these deaths.

Sex selection in favor of males quite common, especially in countries like China, Korea, Iran, Pakistan, Taiwan, and India.

There are 13 million abortions each year, compared to 20 million births in China according to BBC ...

Apparently there is female infanticide in other parts of the world, but that's neither here nor there.

This is shameful and Indians should combat it rigorously. I wish they'd give the death sentence for anyone convicted, but it's not a practical solution. The government has tried several measures, but as usual, change is slow to come about.

Apart from the fact it is disgusting, it's going to severely impact demographics in India if unchecked.

Please don't try your dirty trick, thats just childish!!

Thats what really BBC stated in the acticle;

China, abortion rate of 24 per 1000 woman of childbearing age,

As the rate is usually calcalated, is far from the top of the international

list. www.news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8175864.stm

Well sir as far as oppression of females are concerned.

We allow females to go to school..
Do not force them what to wear what not to...
Indian females are highest scorers in exams within India...
Pass rates for women is higher then boys in India...
there are equal opportunities in India for employment in India..
There are reservations for women in government bodies...

As far as poor are concerned
There are certain schemes which are launched to dedicate a hefty amount of GDP towards their devlopement.
There are measure like "Rajiv Rojgar yojna" for the employment of the poor.
Free education and hospitals are provided to the poor.

We are in infancy to solve these problems but we have started moving on... At least we have taken the step forward. Its a matter of time when we are able to eradicate it.

Sure there are things for woman empowerment (as other countries in SA do as well) but these systematic oppression of race, religion and gender are overwhelming and chronic throughout post independent indian history.

And reading reactions from Indians in this forum, media and else where to these problems, they are defending and encouraging these shortcomings rather than recognizing that pattern need to be corrected.

women got seperate bus,train reservation

they got ladies special bus & metro trains

50% reservation in local governance bodies

Instead of bringing more humans to this world, people seriously need to start considering Adoption. There are many young little children who need a home, shelter, education, food, love. If every house hold who could afford to adopt a baby or a little child could, i think they should. This is one step forward for eradicating homeless children, eradicating poverty and help keep the population balanced. Like i said before if you plan to have 3 kids, you should have 2 and adopt 1. If you plan to have 2 kids, have one and adopt 1. Girls especially

Well sir we are not justifying the problem but what we are telling you are the steps which we have taken to sort the problems out. Neither America not India not Pakistan nor Chinese no one was born without problems. There is path to rectify them. The past was dark. We are moving towards light. But it would be better if you keep the past aside and look towards future. Living in past has never been beneficial to anyone.
