The long road from Sittwe to NE is not only hilly but soon it may also become thorny by the NE rebels. By the way, there is nothing in the news about the price of per ton passage through BD land. I have a personal objection about this. If India thinks it owes money from BD due to 1971 war, BD govt should be prepared to (pay that money - the value of goods IA troops have taken with them).
But, a business is a business. BD should pay the war money and also charge Indian transition through Bangladesh. If India is not willing to pay the fees in cash, it should allow BD-Pakistan trade through its land. Without a reciprocal treaty India will keep on using BD's goodwill in the name of helping it in 1971.
Its about 2.5k kilometers from bangladesh to pakistan...Bill will be hefty if we decide to charge with distance as a factor.
In the short term it would be better to use airways or waterways until some kind of an agreement can be struck.
