Fake Degrees Scandal

Hopefully this fake degree scandal can have a positive result in the long run as young people will realize that university education is an asset. The feudals will hopefully send their children to university and help others from their region to get an education.

Is MR-10% is graduate ?????

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, March 21 (UPI) -- There appears to be some mystery as to where the co-chairman of the Pakistan People's Party went to school in London.

British officials are having trouble finding the school Asif Ali Zardari is said to have received his graduation or equivalent qualification. The PPP says it was the London School of Economics and Business. But, no one seems to know for sure where that is, Dawn, a Pakistani newspaper, reports.

In a written response to questions about London School of Economics and Business, an Edubase official told Dawn, "I have been unable to find evidence of this institution."

Pakistan officials in 2002 established a rule that a candidate for Parliament must have a certain level of college education.

Return salaries, SC orders PML-N MPA
Thursday, August 05, 2010
By Sohail Khan

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the election tribunal’s decision in a fake degree case against PML-N MPA Haji Nasir Mehmood and ordered him to return all the salaries and privileges in two weeks he had received as an MP.

In a detailed judgment, a three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Javed Iqbal, and comprising Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Tariq Pervez, directed the Election Commission of Pakistan to initiate criminal proceedings against Haji Nasir Mehmood.

“Nothing good can be expected from such fakers who not only betrayed the confidence of the voters of their constituency but also cheated them in a shameless manner,” says the judgment.

The court ruled that how could they watch the legitimate interest of people with a dead conscience, which never pricked while defrauding the nation. “They deserve an exemplary punishment so that such shameful instances could not be repeated,” the judgment said and directed Haji Nasir Mehmood to return all salaries and allowances received as a member within two weeks and in case of failure, it shall be recovered as arrears of land revenue.

“The criminal wastage of taxpayers’ money cannot be allowed. The burden to prove a valid, genuine and bona fide qualifications lies on the appellant which in this case could not be discharged,” says the judgment.

Haji Nasir, who was elected from PP-111 Gujrat, was declared ineligible by the Election Tribunal of the Lahore High Court on February 4 due to his fake degree. The tribunal directed the Election Commission to hold fresh poll in the constituency.

The tribunal, headed by Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry, issued the order against MPA Haji Nasir Mehmood on an election petition filed by Mian Imran Masood of the PML-Q. The petitioner had taken the plea that Haji Nasir, who was declared elected from PP-111, Gujrat, possessed a bachelor’s degree from a university not recognised by the Higher Education Commission. He requested the court to declare Haji Nasir disqualified and order a repoll. Later, Haji Nasir filed an application in the Supreme Court against this decision. The Supreme Court on March 4 had reserved the judgment.

The tribunal directed the EC to hold elections in Feb. which is 6 months ago, hence elections would have been and have been held.

The case however moves slowly and now his appeal has been rejected. He will have to pay back all salary and allowances he got. Criminal proceedings to be initiated by tribunal. Suck it Haji.

Faking it — the fake degree saga revisited

By Faiza Ali

We live in a country that thrives on faking it: fake degrees, fake universities, fake brands, fake wills, fake leaderships and all that works!

Faking it is not just confined to the above categories. The whole ‘fake culture’ that has flourished in the last 63 years since Independence has taken its toll on Pakistan and sent us plummeting down the rabbit hole.

Let us start where the cycle begins. Admissions are given on sifarish. Students cheat to pass exams. Examiners give improvised grades to these ‘fakers’. Jobs are dished out to these favourites, thereby strangling the merit. Prime postings and transfers in the bureaucracy are once again for these ‘fakers’.

There is vulgar display of pomp and power by ‘fakers’ in private residences, weddings and parties. With it comes a total disregard for the law; on the road, four-wheel drives complete with tinted windows, armed bodyguards, party flags and sans licence plate. They are exempt from traffic rules while the policemen are left to fleece the family of six on a motorbike or the old man driving the run-down Suzuki. While the ‘faker’ gets away scot-free, the genuine one is handcuffed and sent behind bars.

While the genuine people stand in lines to pay their bills, or buy flour or sugar, the ‘fakers’ do not even pay their bills. They steal electricity through kundas to brighten up their children’s weddings and their homes. They do not pay gas or telephone bills and travel at taxpayer’s expense, while the only modes of travel for the genuine people go bankrupt in the form of Pakistan railways and public transport.

Students who burn the midnight oil and secure good marks, even gold medals, are left to apply to hundreds of organisations, where even an acknowledgement is not received, and they end up driving taxis, or paying a handsome amount to the ‘fakers’ for a clerical position. On the other hand, the ‘fakers’ get the choicest of internships and jobs in the government, and sometimes in the corporate world due to their influential ‘faker parents’ or relatives. The real are left to rot, while the faker thrives.

No wonder Pakistan has never taken off like Malaysia, Turkey or developed countries, where merit is the order of the day. The faker culture is based on sifarish, nepotism, and political favouritism. All sifarishi appointments, hereby called fake appointments, in state enterprises like the Pakistan International Airlines, Water and Power Development Authority, Railways, the Pakistan Steel Mills costing the national exchequer over Rs 250 billion a year.

Faking is not confined to politicians alone. Bureaucrats, despite taking the CSS exams, become only high-ranking clerks, where they move from one ministry to another, perfecting the tricks of red-tapism so they can stuff their own coffers. They are at best ‘generalists’, not experts, heading ministries like science and technology, information technology, water and power, petroleum and natural resources, economic affairs, health, education etc where in reality technocrats and experts are needed. It becomes a lethal combination when the bureaucrat ill-advises the politician. So together they can rip off this country. No wonder Pakistan is always at the bottom of everything.

This fake culture has to be removed from Pakistan, if we ever want to flourish as an independent and autonomous state. We need to preserve our sense of true identity. As Kurt Cobain correctly put it, “The worst crime is faking it. I would rather be hated for who I am rather than loved for who I am not”.

.
Well frankly, that was a pathetic op-ed and looks more like a rant (not saying that the points are invalid). If you're ending your op-ed with a quote from Kurt Cobain, you need to review the intellectual capacity of your readers.

HEC declares degrees of 47 parliamentarians fake

* 11 MNAs, 6 senators, 15 PA members, 1 SA member, 7 each from KP, Balochistan hold fake/invalid degrees
* HEC submits report on degrees of 293 MPs to ECP

By Irfan Ghauri

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission has so far declared 47 educational degrees submitted by lawmakers to the Election Commission of Pakistan at the time of the 2008 general elections fake or invalid, with 11 members of the National Assembly, six senators, 15 members of the Punjab Assembly, one of the Sindh Assembly and seven each of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan assemblies, according to documents obtained from the HEC.

The number is likely to go up as scrutiny of the remaining 816 documents is under process.

The HEC on Thursday handed over to the Election Commission a list of 293 educational degrees it had verified so far, out of which 47 had been declared fake, while 246 were genuine. The invalid degrees included those obtained from non-charted institutions.

Out of 1,170 parliamentarians and members of the provincial assemblies, 60 had been elected in by-polls when the bachelor’s degree condition to contest elections was scrapped, while elections in the NA-42 FATA constituency could not be held so far due to the law and order situation, hence these constituencies would not come under scrutiny.

Senators: The copy of official documents available with Daily Times shows that degrees of three senators had been declared fake, while those of another three were stated invalid.

Among the senators whose degrees had been declared fake included Mir Mohabbat Khan, Gul Muhammad and Rehana Yahya Baloch. The degrees of two independent senators from Balochistan, Wali Muhammad Badini and Nawabzada Muhammad Akbar, were also declared invalid. The degree of another senator – Israrullah Khan, the minister for postal services – which he claimed to have obtained from the International University of America (London) had also been declared invalid.

MNAs: In the list, there were 11 members of the National Assembly whose degrees were held fake or invalid. Fake degree-holder MNAs include, Syed Salman Mohsin and Mazhar Hayat of the PML-N and Nasir Ali Shah and Akhunzada Chitan of the PPP.

The degrees of Hayatullah Khan Tareen and Ghulam Dastgir Rajar had also been declared fake. The degree of Javed Hussain Shah was declared invalid. However, these three members have already quit the assembly.

A PPP member, Humayun Kurd, who is also a cabinet member, is among the invalid degree holders.

The degree of Haji Roziuddin had been declared fake, while that of another MMA legislator was held invalid by the HEC. Another MNA whose degree was held invalid was Mir Hamadan Khan of the PML-Q.

Punjab: The Punjab Assembly members whose degrees had been declared fake were Waseem Gondal, Samina Khawar Hayyat, Safina Saima Khar, Saima Aziz, Safdar Gill, Zulfiqar Ali, Meer Badshah Qaisrani, Afshan Farooq, Seemal Kamran, Farah Deeba, Syeda Majida Zadi, and Shumaila Rana. The provincial assembly members who held invalid degrees, included Shafiq Gujjar and Ijaz Ahmed.

The HEC has so far found one degree of a Sindh Assembly member, Nawbzada Nadir Magsi, as invalid. The HEC had also declared the degrees held by five legislators of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government fake. There were two members of the assembly who held invalid degrees.

In the Balochistan Assembly, degrees of two members had been declared fake and five degrees invalid. Fake degree holders included Haji Ali Madad and Muhammad Khan Toor. Invalid degree holders were Nawabzada Tariq Magsi, Shama Magsi, Rubina Zafar, Abdul Samad Akhunzada and Yar Muhammad.

Earlier, this list was handed over by the HEC’s focal person in his first meeting after his nomination with the ECP spokesman, Afzal Khan, who has also been tasked with supervising the process of verification of parliamentarians’ degrees.

The ECP secretary told reporters that the HEC had sent back copies of 22 degrees for not being legible.
