FA-50 and JF-17 are the finalists for Malaysian Air Force's Deal: Korea Times

.
FA-50 will in all probability win this bid, considering KAI has agreed to sweeten the deal with investments into Malaysian Space Program as well. Indians got happy way too soon. =)

In terms of the LCA requirement, the official noted that the selected platform must be able to conduct air-to-air and air-to-ground missions effectively, with a future maritime strike capability; that it must be able to conduct counterinsurgency operations; that it be “economically viable”; and that enough be bought to be able to conduct operations in two theatres simultaneously, and at very short notice.

Economically viable ??

time will tell 😉

Yup, but FA 50 design is heavily helped by Lockheed Martin while Indian does alone

Doesn't matter. Most of the components are the same btw Tejas and FA50. Infact RMAF missiles like R73 and R77 which they already have on Migs and Sukhois can be integrated with Tejas. There is no such integration possible with FA50. They have to go with American missiles.
During eval they are going to check which one fits their criteria best and the price. Design influence by Lockheed can be a factor if Tejas and FA50 proposals are the same costs and this factor might tip towards FA50.

Tbh I was not fancying either FA50 or Tejas due to Israeli factor. But if this news is true, fair chance Tejas will also be positively evaluated.

Low fly time cost. And single engine.

Actually both JF 17 and Tejas can fire BVR missiles while FA-50 hasn yet completed their AMRAMM integration program. If they chose FA-50 maybe it is preparation for KF 21 possible sales in the future, considering their real rival is Singapore has already ordered F35

I don't think the f35 is gonna a part of the equation when deciding between the said aircrafts. They would have opted for the f35 themselves, not like the u.s. would stop it given Malaysian deep & loaded pockets.

Malaysian will consider low cost fighter as their defense budget is reduced dramatically since about 2010. They focus more on the economy and currently has similar defense budget with Bangladesh.

Looked at it back in

Anyone who had worked in the industry for lockheed Boeing, etc will tell you teja is a joke ;) i am sure someone may go for it, time will tell 😉

It’s even shoved down iaf throat and they even do not want it but it’s now national honor vs iaf ;)

End of story

It's better for Malaysia to continue with Advanced Super Hornet, don't be cheap on defense.

In the long run Malaysia could opt for F-35s or maybe KF-21 Boramae, Malaysia is quite a vast country, it'll need twin engine aircraft and huge fuel capacity, especially to defend Malaysian outpost in the South China Sea.

Malaysia's experience with it's Mig-29 and it's troublesome engine should be put into account when they evaluate JF 17, consider it had the same engine (or derived from it).

Having FA-50 will not help Malaysia deter an ever assertive China.

So does having Tejas, which is a very small plane. Which I believe having a small combat radius.

In reality Gripen was best overall. Well, if they chose FA-50 instead of jf17 that does not mean jf17 is not better because it is and their are many others non technical aspects of choosing FA-50.
However, the FA-50 is reportedly behind the JF-17 in the race as the latter possesses a better mid-range weapons capacity which is a requirement of the Malaysian Air Force.
Duh !
