F7PG The Nimble PAF Fighter Nobody Talks About

Given the F-7 entered service in the early 90's - its run its course a bit too early (in terms of Fighter Jets).

But, I think even the PAF knew that there wasn't really a possibility of extending its life beyond 30 Years.

PAF has initiated LEP STAR package for F-7 and FT-7P so these beauties are not going anywhere soon ....

During Exercise Iron Falcon 2009 PAF pitted the nimble F-7PG against the mighty F-22,F-16E,Mirage-2000 and others. PAF F-7PG pilot got the opportunity to practice extensively against the Raptors as well as the Block-60 Vipers.Though outclassed by the Raptors, they gained alot of appreciation by the Raptor pilots.
They never took part in Dog Fights against Raptors. But there were formation flights with Raptors. F-7s competed against F-16 and F-18s...

It will Only be structural or other things can also get upgraded means a standard PG platform all around ? :-)

detail is not available but it seems comprehensive work related to airframe, my guess is these F-7s would be used as advanced jet trainer for rookie pilots
I wonder, why we don't give SD-10 to these fighters (definitely radar upgrade). Since they have plenty of life in them, they deserve a decent upgrade.

I am glad finally someone said something. Most of our friends here don't even know what the capabilites of the PG's are. They just see the fancy shiny EuroFighters and they want that. PG' are by far one of the most deadliest combat aircraft in WVR fight. There have been not one but multiple occasions where the Vipers got dominated by the PG's in DACT exercises. These aircrafts are still very relevant for the next 10 years, as the majority of the battles against the IAF will still be fought in WVR in a Total War.

Question, any report about those exercises?

These F-7PGs could be turned into wingman support aircraft to accompany JF-17s and have a full load out of BVR's -- and using Link-17 with JF-17 can launch and be guided to enemy targets?

I'm sure if we think out side the box we can make good use of them.

may be it is difficult to place a decent radar capable of BVR engagements in small space of F-7 nose cone .... but personally I would like to see these jets integrated with data link so that they could perform in network centric environment as long as they are in service with PAF
it's true you can check MODP 2017-2018 report ...

You could add A-Darter to the F-7PG, even without HMD/S. So, it won't have HOBS, but the A-Darter has enough range for "Near BVR" capability (20+ km). The wide-angle IIR is also helpful on its own, of course.

No matter how good F-7PG may be, it is still a 3rd generation jet fighter based on the Mig-21 which first flew in 1956; more than 60 years ago and is no match against the 4th generation aircraft.

Admittedly F-7PG is a vastly improved version, but all of us know what happened when Indian Mig-21Bis crossed swords with Pakistani F-16s & Jf-17 and Mig-21Bis supposedly has better avionics than F-7PG! What better proof is needed?

Having F-7PG is a lot better than having no fighter at all, hence PAF would like to keep these flying until the same can be replaced by Thunders, but to believe anything more is merely wishful thinking.
