F-16 deal no longer a viable offer, says US

Excellent news. Now Pakistan can put all available funds for the joint production with China for 5th generation J-20/J-31. It will be a winner for Pakistan in every aspect. It will both help advance Pakistan's scientific technical base and give it a superior 5th generation fighter jet that is more advanced than the F-16. :-)

.
problem is they can't go for Russia fighters like the Su-30/35 or Mig-35 since India owns the Su-30MKI and Mig-29K/ you have many years of experience flying these birds....you know their weaknesses and strengths better than even the Russians I bet.
more than that it's the fact than the Russians will not make an offer to sell those to Pak either, India are still inducting more of those planes.

J-10 is basically a F-16 but is considered 3.5 gen and not sure it worth wasting the money on it.
it'll be a somewhat lower quality F-16 like, even the J-10b with the AESA, not sure they'll even want it

J-31 kinda makes sense depending on price and how stealthy it really is.

if Pakistan can get dozens of J-31 paired with PL-15 missiles that might just even out it's disadvantage against the India Air Force
those are still some while away, but it does look like Chinese fighters are the only realistic alternative Pak have for now.

Interesting Article ... especially the bits the OP left out on purpose ..

WASHINGTON: The F-16 deal was no longer a viable offer, a US State Department official told a Capitol Hill meeting on Thursday, as other speakers urged the United States to help improve Afghanistan-Pakistan ties.

“The drone strike that killed Mullah Mansour was an ice-breaker. There could be more strikes in Balochistan now. This is a very dangerous situation for Pakistan,” warned Marvin Weinbaum, a US scholar from the Middle East Institute, Washington.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Embassy, Ubaidur Rehman Nizami, however, urged members of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group to get together to consider the consequences of the May 21 drone strike that killed Mullah Mansour. The group includes the United States, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan, formed last year to seek a negotiated settlement to the Afghan dispute.

The Capitol Hill meeting was organised by the Pakistani American Congress, which holds this annual event to present Pakistan’s case before US lawmakers.

“Forever is a long time but the term of the offer has expired. So for now it is not a viable offer,” said State Department official David Ranz, when asked if the US offer to sell eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan was dead.

Mr Ranz pointed out that Congress did not approve the Obama administration’s request to use US funds for subsidising the deal and that was why it expired, on May 24.

Besides preventing the sale, Congress made “a significant portion” of the military assistance to Pakistan “conditional to taking action against the Haqqani network”, he added.

Pakistan has been receiving about a billion dollars from the US Coalition Support Fund as reimbursement for its efforts to combat terrorism.

“We are committed to this important relationship with Pakistan. We are committed to getting through the challenges, and to building a stronger relationship,” Mr Ranz said.

The official pointed out that Pakistan was the biggest beneficiary of the US education assistance and the United States was also working closely with Pakistan to help the country overcome its energy crisis.

But sometimes, “the cooperation is subsumed by the challenges, which get the lion’s share in the media”, he said.

Mr Ranz, however, acknowledged that the United States had concerns about Pakistan’s nuclear programme and about terrorist groups like the Haqqani network and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Besides these two long-standing issues, recent short-term issues like imprisoning Dr Shakil Afridi, who allegedly helped the US trace Osama bin Laden, also strained bilateral relations, Mr Ranz said.

Steve Cohen, a scholar from the Brookings Institution, said that “roller-coaster” was an apt description for Pakistan-US relationship and warned that if this “roller-coaster” went on for too long, it could also break.

Mr Cohen said that the US Congress was “deeply concerned” about the possibility of a war between two nuclear-armed countries, India and Pakistan.

The renowned American scholar also urged Pakistanis not to blame outside powers like the US and India for their internal problems, like the insurgency in Balochistan but also to look at the mistakes they had made in that province.

Mr Weinbaum urged the United States to shift its focus from seeking reconciliation with the Taliban to “promoting reconciliation between Afghanistan and Pakistan”.

He argued that unless relations between the two neighbouring countries improved, there could be no peace in the region.

Topic was about F16 deal not being viable. Rest is usual american rant that they use against Pakistan in every statement.

Only thing new is that Americans suddenly developed interest in human rights voilation of known terrorists of BLA BRA BLF. This interest has more to do with CPEC than anything else.

PAF will wait for next 10 years till the time US will need pak again and they will place the demand for 18 F-16 V.

It is not viable for US or for Pakistan? The way i see it, the card of F-16s being played over and over by the US is no longer viable. Please come up with something else.

Fooled me once, shame on you. Fooled me twice, shame on me. How many times has the US fooled pakistan? The shame is on us for not learning the lesson.

All these little morons making fun of Pakistan, should remember this we are again back on track and again our economy will flourish. This is a wake up call for all Pakistanis that we should keep our domestic issues away when it comes to national issues. Pakistan needs to focus only and only on its economy.

I really hope if we could deduct 50% of the budget used for the VIP protocol and spent it on some IT Park that will help us youth creating and exporting softwares, which can fetch Billions of $. If only we could improve our energy requirements.
China is a great blessing but we can't remain dependent only upon China. I wish one day we all could work for Pakistan with only one Agenda. To make Pakistan Great and Strong, only then companies like Lockheed Martin,Boeing, Raytheon and GE would line up with tenders to offer us their top-notch defense products. Until then we can only dream or beg for them.

Most here seem to be worried only about the 8 F-16's but can't the same reasons/concerns from the US be applied for the spares and up-gradation of the existing PAF's F16 fleet?
This could mean no AESA Radar and other upgrades for PAF's main fighter? I'm talking about technology that only America can provide for the F-16's not just regular spares..
If Pakistan cannot get a new platform then only JF17 can have a Chinese AESA which may not be optimum. Tough times ahead? or is this not a cause for concern?

Money saved from F16 fighters can be spent on education.
Wrong. Money should be saved from orange train and spend on education.
Don't create confusion. BECAUSE money saved from F16s is around 400 million dollars. Money being spent on orange train is around 1.8 billion dollars.
Under any circumstances, defence must never be compromised.

PAF will wait for next 10 years till the time US will need pak again and they will place the demand for 18 F-16 V.

World will move to star wars, yet PAF will be still looking for F16s in some junk yards. the reason: We have already well established infra and support system in PAF for F16s and induction of new system will be costly and time consuming. This excuse will be valid till the day of judgement if one look into it. Lazy and lax attitude to be honest.

All of this could have been avoided had Pakistan taken a firm decision regarding the Iran-Saudi Arabia issue. It simply chickened out and now Iran continues its belligerence in tandem with India allowing the later to set up shops in its territories to destabilize Pakistan. India inches closer to the Saudis & the Gulf. So in one swift move, Pakistan ruined relations with tested friends and got no favors from Iran. Meanwhile, India is running with the hares and hunting with the hounds.

My view is that Pakistan should go the Israeli model and downsize its army and put more resources on its Air Force & Navy because all modern wars are decided by air power. Reducing the army to 250k-300k levels will allow meager resources to go to the Air Force and navy while increasing the competency and effectiveness of the army itself. But I suspect there will be deep opposition to this restructuring by vested interests. If I remember correctly, at one point Musharraf was advocating the downsizing of the army.

- Saudi Arabia and Iran are both Muslim countries hence we will try til the end to make peace between both of them and do not intervene. As for Iran if it truly openly or hiddenly is proven in helping India or independently against Pakistan in war or in destabilization of Pakistan then in any future conflict, we will provide open support to Saudis and hence more benefits from them, so it is better if Iran shows open support to India in case of war with Pakistan

- India relations with Arabs will never have any negative impact on Pakistan rather in war with Pakistan they will only see support from Arabs to Pakistan and all their these relations with Arabs will bear no fruit to them in war against Pakistan

- Pakistan yet needs to expand it's forces so their can be an increase in our Armed forces but no decrease

That is a great news. I am feeling really happy.
