Extremists want to impose their agenda on people: President Zardari

Updated at: 1123 PST, Tuesday, April 21, 2009

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has resolved to build Pakistan in accordance with the dream and aspirations of the great visionary Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

President Zardari in his message on the 71st death anniversary of Allama Iqbal, said Pakistan can be best built by understanding Islam in the light of Allama Iqbal’s teachings and by refusing to let armed militants impose their interpretation of Islamic thought and morality on the people through guns and bullets. “This indeed is the best tribute we can pay to Allama Iqbal today.”

President Zardari said Iqbal was the great poet philosopher who first envisioned a separate homeland for the Muslims of the South Asian sub continent.

The freedom and independence of the people of Pakistan living as an independent nation is in no small measure due to the great vision of a great visionary Allama Muhammad Iqbal, he added.

The President said today, as never before, the message of Iqbal has been misunderstood as some elements are using force to deprive the people of their hard earned freedom and independence.

Never before was the need for understanding Iqbal’s concept of Pakistan and the true message of Islam as great as it is today, he added.

Next generation of dreaded terrorists will come from Pak'
Rezaul Lashkar in Islamabad

If rapid Talibanisation of Pakistan continues, the next generation of the world's most sophisticated terrorists will be born, indoctrinated, and trained in the nuclear-armed Pakistan, an American think tank on Tuesday said in a report.
"Today, Al-Qaeda's [Images] top leadership is most likely based in Pakistan, along with top Taliban [Images] leaders, both Afghan and Pakistani," said the report 'From AfPak to PakAf: A Response to the New US Strategy for South Asia' prepared by the Council on Foreign Relations.

The "Talibanisation" of Pakistan's Pashtun belt is gradually moving eastward into settled districts, creating new terrorist safe havens in once-tranquil locales such as the Swat valley, said the report authored by Daniel Markey.

"Pakistan's non-Pashtun extremist and sectarian groups, some of which were historically nurtured by the state as a means to project influence into India and Afghanistan, also have the potential to prove deeply destabilising," it added.

Further groups like the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed or Jamaat-ud-Dawah are well resourced and globally interconnected. Some appear to retain significant influence within state institutions and enjoy public sympathy, in certain cases because of the social services they provide, the report said.

It said over the past two years, the security environment in Afghanistan and Pakistan has taken a significant turn for the worse. The spread of militancy, whether by terrorists connected with the Al-Qaeda, the Taliban of Mullah Omar [Images] or Baitullah Mehsud, criminal gangs, narco-traffickers, or sectarian extremists, among others, has destabilised the Pashtun belt in southern and eastern Afghanistan as well as western Pakistan.

"At the same time, a range of other violent actors from Punjabi anti-Indian extremists to Central Asian warlords-operate in the non-Pashtun areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan," the report said, adding Pakistan and Afghanistan offer these groups an unusually hospitable environment, one that complicates and magnifies the danger.

"The geographic proximity of Pakistan's nuclear program to these sophisticated terrorists and the recent history of illicit transfers of material and know-how also pose a unique threat," it said.

The report said fragile state institutions, weak leadership, and inadequate resources limit the ability of Islamabad [Images] and Kabul to fight militancy in the near term or to foster moderation over the long run.

Ideal suggestion should have been withdrawing support for terror groups and concentrating on the economic development, especially the tribal areas where the taliban is more prominent. I dont know how effective that would be now as the taliban have made their intentions clear and are aiming to impose its will across pakistan. I believe major portions of your budget goes on army so they should take some concrete steps in raining in these extrimist elements even at the cost of alteast some sympathasiers of this radical outfit.

Upon reading such & similar posts & watching TV I am of the opinion that either the full import of what is happening & will / can happen is not clear to those in Pak or they have given their consent.

If their consent is there then its futile discussing any further as it must be considered decision & as a nation Pak is ok with the consequences.

If not , what are they waiting for & when will the nation act ? Will it remain divided among the hawks & Doves while the Talibs inflict permanent & Ir repairable damage to the nation, society, way of life & every thing that most common men take for granted.

Is the PA waiting for the situation to worsen & then step in to appear as ' Saviour's' thereby discrediting the elected govt ( & democracy) or has it been infiltrated by the hardcore elements.

You have a point there. The only thing surprising to me right now is the Army's stance on this whole fiasco. Everything is going down hill for us, there's a stench of uncertainty in the air, yet the Army is keeping its calm, maintaining its 'poker face' which is quite new to the public.

It's high time for the Army to act and get rid of this Government. What scares me, is the thought that they might let the government fall deliberately off the cliff, which it was so eager to climb. WITHOUT even offering their hand to the people.

Ideal solution to the problem is to stand up and not accept the policy of the militants if they are now not cooperating then they should be tried in courts give them a court order summon them if they don't turn up threaten them and then overrun them but if we answer violence with immediate violence then it won't help.

The problem is my friend that the 'Policy of the Militants' is backed up by an armed resistance. Trying to take care of them using 'Non violent' means hasn't worked and will not work. The only language they understand, is spoken by the barrel of a large calibre assault rifle.

if you want to discourage people from symapthising with the Taliban i say let the nizam-e-adal take place let the Qazi courts get established....and then the government has done its part of the deal...the second part is Taliban laying down arms...once they fail to keep there commitment i think you can encourage the local people to not sympathise with them and show them as fake liars and using ISLAM's name....then you get popular support

that is when u call in the army and with the help of the locla population destroy taliban once and for all!!

Ok then if were to pose a solution I would cordon as much area as I possibly can get a guaranteed no LOC change or fire exchange from India constantly air on all stations the departue of people from the regions for their own safety wait around three weeks and once intel shows that people have left we attack the area with everything we have got then use all our developement aid the best we can to bing all the attacked areas upto scratch.

Local people already showed their allegiance with the state of Pakistan when they decided to leave their everything behind so that the Army can finish up their operation against the Taliban.

It's a pity that our media doesn't emphasize on the hundreds and thousands of refugee's who've been effected by this war and have given their sacrifices for our better tomorrow. If those hundreds and thousands of people didn't accept the Taliban ideology, then it's quite evident that the Taliban aren't welcome in their region. They never supported them and they still don't.

The only flaw here is that they should be standing proud behind Pakistan Army's military muscle, instead of standing scared behind the Taliban's weaponry.

In this situation , what should an average citizen expect from his Govt ?

Ambivalence , or decisiveness ?

What should a father tell his daughters ..go an seek admission / continue higher studies or wait till the PA or GOP decides what they eventually will do with / for us ?

People that were moved out of their homes have had no betterment in their lifestyle so how can they be supportive of the war?

They wouldn't mind anyone so long as their is peace.

I think that they will send their children to other cities for higher education it is neccesary for them to do so infact some groups have also setup to provide support to such people who have to face hardships just for their education.
