10.48 am: Second submarine, INS Sindhuratna also damaged in explosion

The explosion and fire aboard the INS Sindhurakshak has also damaged another submarine that was berthed next to the ill fated vessel at the Mumbai naval dockyard. The second submarine has now been identified as the INS Sindhuratna, reported Headlines Today.

The cause of the fire has not been officially revealed, but media channels quoting unnamed naval sources, have said that it is likely that the weapons aboard the fully loaded submarine detonated, causing the explosion.

Debris of missiles and boosters aboard INS Sindhurakshak have been found in the Mumbai naval dockyard, reported Times Now, virtually confirming that the warheads exploded. If this is indeed the case, it is unlikely that the vessel, which recently underwent a $18 million revamp in Russia, will ever see action again.

That sub is gone for sure. Even if it's fixed, no sailor would want to board it again.

You are not quoting the right news as there were 2 Submarines parked beside it and it might be possible that both have been damaged severly if this has been exploded(like all of the news channels saying that the sub has been sunk).

Mods, can this thread be kindly merged with the existing one which is running to packed houses?

Thanks!

According to sources in the Ministry of Defence, early reports said the explosion happened in the armament chamber of the fully-armed submarine, which carried heavy weight torpedos and "Klub" anti-shipping and land attack missiles.

Navy divers are conducting rescue and salvage operations, but have not been able to enter the submarine yet. A Navy statement said the submarine,

well they are quoting the naval sources from the site!! And definitely they know more than us so until final reports ain't come, we can only speculate.

Did they quote the security guard at the site?

Use your head. How could anyone know at this point? Look at the structural illustration for the Kilo, and read about the batteries installed on the Kilo. It's not possible a battery explosion could have caused the torpedoes to explode. Not possible.

Such is the quality of the Indian new channels. Wow.

excuse my knowledge on Missile system , but shouldn't they be flying all over the place if they were to explode?

.
But if all the three have been damaged then IN should send their fleet of remaining 7 Kilo Submarines back to Russia for Upgrades whether it would take $25-35 Million per submarine but this action should be taken seriously and in the mean time they should call in expertise from EU, US and Russia for their N-Submarine.

An young engineer is found dead who is from Vizag( news channels reporting)..... R.I.P

. .
surprising thing is, that it was just upgraded in russia?
this was also a relativley newer sub in its class..india does have some older subs which it wants to retire
a year back an indian defence report audiot did warned about poor conditions of subs, which resulted in india trying to speed up the scorpian deal

.
Interesting the Mumbai fire brigade have withdrawn to leave the IN to deal with this themselves.

.
here we have parking of subs on mumbay naval base

If 2 or 3 Kilos have been exploded and it means they have damaged the Ships and Equipment near by and also the Port as well.

Man IN should come up with true picture as media is playing with Indian Heart....

now i ask my final question, is there by any chance, i mean any chance, any possibility of radioactive leak from warhead explosions?
