Three injured in small explosion at Shanghai's Pudong airport
AP — UPDATED ABOUT AN HOUR AGO
SHANGHAI: Chinese authorities say three people have been injured by a small explosion at the check-in area of Shanghai's Pudong airport Sunday.

The airport's management said on its microblog that the blast occurred at 2:20 pm (0620 GMT) in the airport's T2 check-in area and appeared to have been caused by some sort of home-made explosive.

It said the three people had been taken to a hospital but gave no word about their condition, adding there was no disruption to flights in or out of the busy airport.

China Central Television (CCTV) also reported the explosion, saying injuries were feared.

Photos posted online by those claiming to be witnesses showed police keeping people back from the site, with luggage on the floor apparently left by passengers.

The incident comes as people returned from travel after a public holiday and just days before Thursday’s opening of a Disney theme park in Shanghai.

Wish the injured a speedy recovery and hope the culprits are caught. I wonder who is responsible.

Man sets off home-made explosive at Pudong airport, attempts to commit suicide

A man set off home-made explosives at Terminal 2 in Pudong International Airport and then attempted to commit suicide, police said today.

The man, who is not identified and in his 30s, is now in a critical condition. The blasts also injured four other passengers.

According to police, the explosives were stocked inside a beer bottle. The man took out the bottle from his backpack, ignited the lead and threw it near the C check-in counter at 2:26pm.

The bottle exploded and its flying fragments injured other passengers at the check-in counter at the airport.

The injured included a 53-year-old man from the Philippines, and two Chinese nationals -- a 67-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman. They sustained injuries in their heads, hands, legs and buttocks, the hospital said.

After the blast, the man took out a knife from the backpack and slashed his own throat, police said.

He was rushed to the Pudong New Area People’s Hospital about 3pm. The hospital said the vein in his neck was cut. Doctors at the hospital carried out an emergency surgery on him. He will remain in the intensive care unit, the hospital said.

Authorities have raised the security level at the Pudong airport now. Passengers and their luggage will be screened and inspected before they enter the terminal buildings.

A surveillance video camera at T2 showed travelers waiting in line to check-in when a blast went off causing panic in the area.

Hmm, in that case, I think it was carried out by a Uighur terrorist.

Gambling debts likely motive for Shanghai airport bombing

The suspect in the Shanghai airport explosion had a large amount of gambling debt, said police on Monday.

Zhou Xingbai, 29, from Tongren City in southwest China's Guizhou Province, became a migrant worker in 2006 when he finished middle school, police said.

He has allegedly been addicted to online gambling since 2014, squandering his savings and living in heavy debt.

Zhou wrote on his WeChat account that he owed many people money, and was going to do something "very crazy," which would definitely cost his life.

He allegedly left Kunshan of east China's Jiangsu Province at 7:34 a.m. Sunday by coach. At Shanghai Pudong International Airport, he allegedly threw a homemade explosive device in beer bottle at a check-in counter in Terminal 2 at 2:26 p.m..

Police found explosive used to make firecrackers in Zhou's house.

Four passengers, including a Philippine national, were injured by flying glass, and a few flights were affected. Zhou cut his own throat with a knife at the airport, but was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The case is under further investigation.

Hope everyone is safe. We are living in troubled times and no amount of precautions seems adequate enough. I hope people are safe.
