Expatriate Pakistanis visit Israel

By Anwar Iqbal

WASHINGTON, July 2: A group of Pakistani Americans that played a key role in arranging a historic meeting between the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Israel last year sent an eight-member delegation to Israel last week as part of its effort to improve ties between Israel and the Muslim world.

“We don’t have an iota of doubt that there should be relations between Pakistan and Israel and between Israel and the entire Arab world,” an Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post quoted Dr Omar Atiq, a member of the delegation, as saying. “The ice has been broken. It’s just a matter of time. It’s not if — it’s when. It’s round the corner — despite what is going on in the news,” he said.

During its three-day stay in Israel, the group met several top Israeli leaders, including Supreme Court President Aharon Barak, Foreign Ministry Director-General Aharon Abramovitch, top foreign ministry officials, IDF coordinator of government activities in the territories Gen Yusef Mishlav and former foreign minister Silvan Shalom. They also met Saeb Erekat and Sari Nusseibeh on the Palestinian side.

American Jewish Congress hailed the visit of the Pakistani expatriates to Israel as a breakthrough and hoped that would set a precedent for many more visits by Pakistanis.

Dr Atiq said the trip helped give him an understanding of the issues and the realities on the ground in Israel that he thought he knew, but realised during the visit that he did not know as well as he should have.

“We came here thinking people should just talk to each other to overcome their differences,” Dr Atiq said.

Well,

We drew 'first blood' against them when we sided with Arabs in 1967 and 1973, Kargill is nothing compared to the support we provided the arabs.

Times are changing, we need to review our foreign policy and realise that the Israeli conflict is not our 'problem'.
We can contribute more to peace in Middle East as friends rather than enemies.
Israel has issues with Palestineans and her neighbors, its not our war so let them deal with eachother.

If sworn enemies like French, Germans and English can live in peace why can't we?

.
I agree with you my friend.

Helping our muslim bro's and muslim country, what's bad in this? if we've helped Arabs in past wars.

They made the right choice at that time, but now things are different, why not atleast develope some friendly relations now, and hope for good in future.

Building trust, can still be quite controversial with Israel, dont get me wrong, i dont hate them but i also dont want them to harm Paksitan, as they did try in the Past.

There you are with a very nice article and all that is asked is info about the picture (smile).

I agree that the typical arab mentallity towards Jews is wrong. Communicating is number one issue. If the Jews are that bad then how come that most arab nations are nothing more then ugly dictatorships where people are poor and the same get re-elected over and over again? Why do arab nations produce nothing more then oil? Why do arab nation invest almost zero in other islamic nations? I agree that Israel should take notice of Palestine but the way arabs have been provocating it did not help anyone except Israel (at huge costs). I am not pro arab or pro Israel but get tired of people using eachother the most negative way.

I didn't condemn our support to araba did I? But by doing so we drew first blood so if Israel comes to support India in Kargill or even attacking Kahuta who could blame them?

Thats exactly my pov.

Israel won't harm Pakistan now we have the capability to strike back. Pakistan can be as important for Israel as we can be to them as we're the only nuclear armed muslim nation and will have that honor for a very long time to come.
Recognition of the jewish could have a significant impact on the growing Indo-Irasel ties, we need to review our policy.

That is where you are mistaken, Israel makes it a policy that every islamic nation is its enemy. They see Pakistan on their radar.

‘The Israeli Connection: Who Arms Israel and Why?’ – written by professor Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi of Israel’s Haifa University. It characterizes the anti-Muslim activities by saying – Israel sees Islam as the greatest danger to its dominance over the Middle East, itself built on cruelty, violation and oppression

Israel has a problem with non-jews, goyims. The latest barbaric attack on civilians in Gaza is ample proof of this where they use one kidnapped soldier (vs 9,000 palestinians prisoners of which 1,000 are held without any charge or trial of which few hundred are children) and qassam rockets which we know can't do anything, to justify the deployment of their most sophisticated weapons arsenal. 6 israelis have been killed by those qassam crude firework rockets in the last 6 years whereas 60 palestinians killed in the past 6 months by israeli shellings, and with the recent military invasion of gaza they've killed an equal amount in just days.

Arabs just sit there, watching the massacres.

Because of access to American technology and financial support, Israel has become the third largest arms producer in the world, making more weapons than China, Britain or France. In fact, Israel produces 12% of the world's arms. And it sells to countries few other want to associate with: Apartheid-era South Africa (where it trained the notorious security forces and helped develop the regime's nuclear program), Mobutu's Zaire, Liberia under Charles Taylor, the Burmese generals, Agentina, Brazil, Chile, Honduras and Guatemala under their military dictatorships, the corrupt and brutal regimes of Central Asia and Rwanda, where it sold small arms to the Hutu before and during the genocide, then, without interruption, to the Tutsis immediately afterwards.

Israel was effective in killing Pakistanis in the 71 war, where they supplied india with the artillery shells.

During the Kargil War, Israel responded magnificently, despite pressures from various quarters not to supply. UAVs for high altitude surveillance, laser – guided systems and many other items were supplied within 24 hours.26 Israel is reported to have emerged as India’s No.2 defence supplier after Russia, and with costs of Russian spare parts for replacement escalating by 300-500%, Israel may emerge as India’s No. 1 defence supplier. India is presently faced with the daunting prospect of buying immediately $200 million worth of ammunition and further $ 1.5 billion later to make up for losses in recent fires at Indian Army Amunition Depots.27 Israel may be the only source for immediate replacement. http://www.saag.org/papers2/paper131.html

Egypt and Turkey are muslim countries and no longer considered as their enemy as they've recognised Israel and have dipolomatic ties.
