MUMBAI: India has provided USD 500 million (Rs 3,561 crore) line of credit to Bangladesh for defence-related procurement in the neighbouring country.

Export Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) entered into an agreement on April 11 with Bangladesh's Armed Forces Division for making available to the latter a Government of India-supported line of credit (LoC) of USD 500 million, the RBI said in a notification on Friday.

The LoC is for the purpose of financing defence-related procurement in Bangladesh, it said.

Under this soft loan facility, financing of export of eligible goods and services from India would be allowed subject to the Foreign Trade Policy, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said.

"Out of the total credit by Exim Bank under the agreement, goods and services including consultancy services of the value of at least 75 per cent of the contract price shall be supplied by the seller from India," it said.

The remaining 25 per cent of goods and services may be procured by the seller for the purpose of the eligible contract from outside India, including Bangladesh.

But, based on the nature of the procurement, the eligible goods and services up to the contract price to be supplied by seller from India may be further reduced from 75 per cent to 65 per cent and further reduction may be considered on a case-to-case basis.

The agreement under the LoC is effective from November 7.

The terminal utilisation period of the loan is 10 years from the date of signing of the agreement, the RBI added further.

does bd really need 500 million of third world india...and then ppl get upset when i say hasina and her family need to go.

BD wasn't interested for Indian defense credit. They literally begged us to use it. So govt bought something which is not that important to stop their nagging.

কানের সামনে ঘ্যান-ঘ্যান, প্যান-প্যান, কান্নাকাটি কার ভাল লাগে?

It is quite sad news... if you look from both economic and geopolitical perspective.

BD must invest these $ in local defence industry from its own pockets and create jobs.... and NOT borrow!!!

Anyhow, your country your rules... but then the BD nationalism displayed here or in your local media becomes rather contradictary... don't you think?

A strong, prosperous and FREE BD is in Pak's National Interests... hopefully, there are rational people in BD to see the long term game they have been played by the elite ...

If anyone of BD posters could provide data on ACTUAL per capita income of common BDs and also the curve of salary growth in ratio with shown GDP growth....

BD Nationalism is a big smokescreen and misdirection... but then you guys are smart people...

In my opinion, there is no way out for BD, at least for quite sometime, from this current setup of BAL, supported by India.

Dear god.... it is time to liquidate BAL... i hope the military establishment is ready to do its duty to defend the nation from the enemy within.

If viewed, in a rational way, the course, proposed by you, is not advisable, at all, under the prevailing circumstances. India is in a very strong position to play some obnoxious mischief against BD, if military intervention takes place. That is how, I think; though I don't claim to know much about the internal political conditions of BD.

I have observed one weird thing about Bengalis : they are unpredictable and you never know what will they do in next moment or what they are thinking about you.
Second thing I learned about humans: jab 2 dosron ki larai kerwani hoto unki reshtydari kerwado.
Third thing is particular with subcontinent: whenever you advise someone, he will do exactly opposite to that.

So sir, summing up : what Bengalis are thinking, can't be said. The more Indians and Bangladeshis will come together, the more they will move apart, and, telling Bangladeshis something at this time will be useless.
Let's time tell them.

I don't understand why Bangladesh would buy 3rd class equipment from India.
