Bangladesh Navy successfully launched missile form the frigate BNS Bangabandhu in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, the concluding day of its annual exercise titled Exercise Sea Thunder 2012.
LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam witnessed the missile firing and other exercises from the modern frigate BNS Bangabandhu as the chief guest.
BNS Durdharsha launched the missile successfully, said an ISPR release.
Earlier, on his arrival at Chittagong, the minister was received by Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral ZU Ahmed and a smartly turned out guard of honour paid to him.
He inspected the guard and took salute.
Most of BN ships including frigates, offshore patrol vessels (OPV), minesweepers, patrol boats, gun boats, torpedo boats, newly-inducted maritime patrol helicopter, fighter air crafts of Bangladesh Air Force and a good number of units of Bangladesh Army participated in the 23-day-long exercise.
The exercise concluded with launching of missile, anti-submarine gun firing, anti-air firing and displaying of various techniques of naval warfare.
Protection of sovereignty inside of our maritime boundary, protection of sea resources, strengthening the security in the Sea Line of Communication (SLOC), prevention of piracy and sea robbery, protection of bio-diversity and ensuring the constabulary were the main themes of the exercise.
Besides, different techniques of naval ships and operations namely surveillance in the sea area, search & rescue operations, logistic operations, landing operations, and protection of maritime establishments at coastal area were mentionable events of the four phases of exercise.
By witnessing the missile firing and other exercises, the chief guest congratulated all naval personnel for successful launching of missile and appreciated them for maintaining the high standard of professionalism, skill and devotion to the services.
He welcomed the ongoing progress of Bangladesh Navy under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In his speech, the minister appreciated the role played by Bangladesh Navy in respect of protection of sea area and contribution to national economic development. UNB
