Excl: America eyes Bangladesh

We should just remain neutral for now.

If you look at a wider scale, India is worth more to America than bangladesh. If america can bring india's military installations under its scanner by coming to bangladesh, it can also bring our military installations under their scanner as well. Which i think can be a danger to our security.

Plus, we are still modernising our military with most of our equpment coming from the chinese. This sudden military closeness with the US might cause china to re evaluate our relationship with them. Which may hurt our military modernisation as well as economic and development aid.

Very good move keeping Indian interests in mind. With India-US cooperation already on a high, US navy presence will also keep Chinese in check . And who knows Bangladesh could end up as another vassal state like Pakistan with presence of US troops on their land in near future.

Having USA in BoB will not make any difference to China. Just look at the map. When you are worried about getting surrounded by China actually you will be surrounded by USA.

I dont support permanent base in BoB. We need to take care of our own security. USA might give us 200, F-15, 10 Submarines and some other tools so that we do the job on their behalf in BoB.

Most probably a rumor.I haven't found any other source apart from timesnow. These guys can do anything for getting a little bit attention. However if it is true then it is not good news for India or Bangladesh. They will probably buy Bangladesh with billions of dollars and remain there for a very long time.I understand that the Japs want them out of Okinawa.

Bangladesh should give basing rights to USA, if and when they ask for it, under the following conditions:

- US/West support to let Bangladesh become a member of ASEAN
- help establish land (road/rail) link between Myanmar and Bangladesh so Bangladesh can connect seamlessly with greater Mekong sub-region of ASEAN
- provide duty free access to US market for Bangladesh products

Lets start with the above list and I welcome others to add to the above list.

Providing basing right to US is a big thing, the conditions you mentioned are not enough. I don't support a US base here but if BD has to provide such facility, there has to be some more conditions added like BD needs to have an under the table assurance from USA that with a nuclear development and testing scenario in BD, US will play a drama of putting false embargo on us without hurting our economy. We need nuclear capability badly to balance the regional power as well as some other developments like ballistic missile capability. If agreed on such conditions, I'll also support giving a full BoB block to them as a gift.

I think you have the right idea. China will be least concerned by this development. On the other hand, India will develop an ulcer over this. I believe in a strong US and Chinese presence in the Bay and Bangladesh may extract huge benefits and rewards from this arrangement. However, in the meantime the India's will create chaos in Bangladesh and try to make it into another Nepal before the US can set foot in BD. As I have been repeatedly been saying during the last few weeks, the geopolitical calculations have changed dramatically and this is reflected in the Economist articles. Big trouble is coming Bangladesh's way in the next few months as the US attempts to gain more influence in BD at the expense of India. Not necessarily a bad thing if India can be extricated from BD with the least bloodshed and turmoil.

Depends upon what US is offering to Bangladesh. Pakistani example may not apply in this case because Bangladesh offers a vastly different geo-political picture. Pakistan is in mess because of its own incompetence.

1.The upper Bay of Bengal is quite shallow except for the Swatch of No Land. That Swatch ends into the Monpura Island where the Americans had been wanting a base since the 1960's. Sheikh Mujib rejected this even during the last meeting Ambassador Farland had with him a couple of days before the crack-down.

2. BD will be up in arms if such a project was even planned.

Bro, Bangladesh needs alliances. India is getting very strong. And with passage of time, Bangladesh will be too vulnerable. This kind of decision will be strategic in nature.

Emotions should not be allowed to get in the way of strategic matters. Look at the mess of Pakistan as an example.

If Bangla-US relationship is based on mutual benefits, their should be no issue. This is an opportunity for you guys.

Otherwise, other nations might be willing to fill your shoes.

So hearing the news of placing the 7th fleet of US in to the bay of Bengal Indians has started to *** in their pant and started all these hue and cry and the their Suppa powwa bubble has been busted .

US can have the base but how long it can maintain it. Soon it will give it to India the rising naval power in Asia and go to pacific.

Are we objecting for emotional reasons or on the basis of national interest. Let us be clear about this first. I assume if emotional then this probably has something to do with the Muslim Ummah and US involvement in the Middle East. This has not stopped Muslim countries in North Africa, the Middle East, South Asia or the Far East from permitting basing rights so what are we exactly objecting to here? Let us be very precise about this.
