Excl: America eyes Bangladesh

But here, USA is putting more emphasis on Asia, and fortunately we have good relation with both USA and China.

There are common US and Chinese interests in Myanmar and Bangladesh relation and connectivity. Bangladesh can reap benefit from such rare convergence of interest. India had been and will act as spoiler. On going india propaganda lines are:

1) US 7th fleet will have base in Bangladesh.
2) US will base troops in Bangladesh and in Bangladesh-india border.
3) India is telling Myanmar Bangladesh Muslim population and culture is threat to Myanmar and US will use Bangladesh against Myanmar.

We along with others have to be careful on indian propaganda and interference.

.
Yeah of all people I'd expect a Bangladeshi to admit it. It's like a judge taking a thief's words at face value  and don't try to convince me I have seen it first hand. But let's not talk about illegal migration here, this thread is about your delusions about having a US base as a deterrent against India.

You have condescending tone. Pipe down chachi! I'll tell you what I've seen, Indians in their thousands working in top management positions in Multinationals & Private Corporations, owning buying houses & garment industries and God knows what. They are also illegal immigrants in Bangladesh. Your dada bhai is at work here too. They make millions from here and build houses in Delhi and all over giving nothin in return, not even taxes. Indians use their influence on certain governments and push policies that seem against Bangladesh's sovereignty & best interests benefiting only Hindustan. So can shut up & put up with our immigrants whom you treat like dirt anyway.

I agree with you though that it's delusional for Bangladesh to think that US would protect us from India. India is a threat & a thorn in every possible way. We need to seriously contemplate a strategy to counter India's game. China will be great help in that territory. Bangladesh needs to hatch a good plan to poke a finger up everyone's bottom and benefit from it. South Asia is hot property now and China has to defend it if she has any ambition to be the next superpower. Indo-China border relations are not at their best and BD can take advantage of that and build a sweet relationship with China. If we give a naval base to China in return for Favoured Market Access to China as market for our products, grants & aids to build infrastructure & a direct rail & road connection through the Chicken Foot border, India will be shitting in her undies and Liberty will be redfaced and without a base in South Asia. We are a small fish in a ocean of Sharks and we need to have a symbiotic relationship with the Sharks to be realistic. We must develop alternate markets for our products so that US sanctions have little effect on us. Bangladesh is in line to be an adversary of India as the hindu state is playing with our water, killing our people in the border areas, playing with our politics, sending in drugs to destroy our youth.. controlling & manipulating our markets, destabilizing politics & government all the while dressed as a "friend". Action sounds louder than words and India's actions are unfriendly whereas China has potential of being a great friend with benefits to both. US is no-ones true friend as seen recently in Pakistan, although Pakistan is very forgetful & forgiving. The American era is sun-setting and it will be a great error to side with an aging power who turns on their friends after satisfying their needs. So screw US & lets swim with the Chinese Shark to join our quest against Hindustan.

The following report on the US future activity in the Asia-Pacific shows no trace that it is eying Bangladesh for basing part of its 7th Fleet.

Target Asia-pacific
US to move its 60pc warships
Defence secy discloses new military strategy; China reacts at America's shift of emphasis to Asia
Leon Panetta
Reuters, Singapore

The United States will shift a majority of its warships to the Asia-Pacific region by 2020, Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said yesterday, giving the first details of a new US military strategy.

Fleshing out details of a strategic pivot to Asia announced in January, Panetta said the United States would deploy 60 percent of its battleships there, up from about 50 percent now, while maintaining six aircraft carriers in the region.

The US defence secretary, speaking at an annual security forum in Singapore, also sought to dispel the notion that the shift, after more than a decade of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, was designed to contain China's emergence as a global power.

He acknowledged differences between the world's two largest economies on a range of issues, including the South China Sea.

"We're not naive about the relationship and neither is China," Panetta told the Shangri-La Dialogue attended by senior civilian and military leaders from about 30 Asia-Pacific nations.

"We also both understand that there really is no other alternative but for both of us to engage and to improve our communications and to improve our (military-to-military) relationships," he said. "That's the kind of mature relationship that we ultimately have to have with China."

Some Chinese officials have been critical of the US shift of military emphasis to Asia, seeing it as an attempt to fence in the country and frustrate Beijing's territorial claims.

China has downgraded its representation to the Shangri-La Dialogue from last year, when Defence Minister Liang Guanglie attended and met then-US Defence Secretary Robert Gates. This year the Chinese military was represented by the vice president of the Academy of Military Sciences.

Panetta, by contrast, was accompanied by General Martin Dempsey, the military's top officer as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Admiral Samuel Locklear, the head of the US Pacific Command.

The US Defence Secretary was at the start of a seven-day visit to the region to explain to allies and partners the practical meaning of the US military strategy unveiled in January that calls for rebalancing American forces to focus on the Pacific.

The trip, which includes stops in Vietnam and India, comes at a time of renewed tensions over competing sovereignty claims in the South China Sea, with the Philippines, a major US ally, and China in a standoff over the Scarborough Shoal near the Philippine coast.

FLASHPOINT

Panetta met Philippines Defence Secretary Voltaire Gazmin on the sidelines of the conference and discussed areas of future cooperation, including maritime awareness and cyberspace, and called for peaceful resolution of the South China Sea dispute.

The South China Sea is a flashpoint but, with about 90 percent of global trade moving by sea, protecting the teeming shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean and the Strait of Malacca is equally vital.

"Maritime freedoms cannot be the exclusive prerogative of a few," Indian Defence Minister AK Antony told the forum. "We must find the balance between the rights of nations and the freedoms of the world community."

Overlapping maritime claims -- often fuelled by hunger for oil, gas, fish and other resources -- are compounded by threats from pirates and militants, delegates said.

Panetta also met Korean Defence Minister Kim Kwan Jin and Japanese Defence Vice Minister Shu Watanabe on the sidelines of the conference. They issued a statement saying North Korean provocations like its April missile launch "pose a serious threat to the peace and stability" of the region and the world.

Panetta said he was committed to a "healthy, stable, reliable and continuous" military-to-military relationship with China but underscored the need for Beijing to support a system to clarify rights in the region and help to resolve disputes.

"China has a critical role to play in advancing security and prosperity by respecting the rules-based order that has served the region for six decades," he said.

Under the plans Panetta announced yesterday, the Navy would maintain six aircraft carriers assigned to the Pacific. Six of its 11 carriers are now assigned to the Pacific but that will fall to five when the USS Enterprise retires this year.

The number will return to six when the new carrier USS Gerald R Ford is completed in 2015.

The US Navy had a fleet of 282 ships, including support vessels, as of March. That is expected to slip to about 276 over the next two years before beginning to rise toward the goal of a 300-ship fleet, according to a 30-year Navy shipbuilding projection released in March.

But officials warned that fiscal constraints and problems with cost overruns could make it difficult to meet that goal. US Senator John McCain told a news conference he was concerned about the decline in the size of the US fleet.

"At some point - and I think we may be at that point - we are not going to be able to carry out the kinds of commitments to the region that the secretary outlined in his speech," said McCain, a top Republican senator on defence issues.

Panetta underscored the breadth of the US commitment to the Asia-Pacific region, noting treaty alliances with Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines and Australia as well as partnerships with India, Singapore, Indonesia and others.

He said the United States would attempt to build on those partnerships with cooperative arrangements like the rotational deployment agreement it has with Australia, and is working on with the Philippines.

Panetta said Washington would also work to increase the number and size of bilateral and multilateral military training exercises it conducts in the region. Officials said last year the United States carried out 172 such exercises in the region.

distorted history..India never joined soviet camps..it is india who proposed non-alignment.and Soviet Union never had any bases in India unlike pakistan from where USA spied on Soviet Union..

remember this post BD members...in future never cry here in forum saying BSF is killing innocent citizens etc etc....and @captain planet, should we post bodies of your soldier whom Indian forces killed???remember,it'll take half a day to make vanish your entire army..show your false pride to somewhere else.

Ask your coward BSF and IA troops to shoot at our BGB troops instead of shooting at unarmed civilians. You may create another Pilkhana, but our 13 BGB (BDR) troops will always face another group of unworthy 400 BSF/IA cowards. Do you understand the difference between the mindsets of these two groups? One group of 400 BSF/IA troops sneaked in the dark of a night to capture a group of only 13 BDR troops.

The group of 13, fully knowing what is waiting ahead, waited to be killed rather than leaving their posts. Now, an unequal fight like this has become our standard bearer. Our BGR will do similar things also in the future when this puppet govt is out.

.
:rofl: .. this kid never gets down from bed...passes whole day lying idle on bed...lolz !!

Uncle I think you dnt know that your forces are not able to counter any one

Just find the reality ... BDB kills unarmed BSF guards those were busy making border fens

delusional post again..

1st.Pilkhana is not created by RAW...its RAW who gave BD about the info in advance..and its your mighty BDR who did this.

2nd.why on earth BSF would snick into BD to capture BDR soldiers on peacetime???except they did something that pissed them..another delusional comment..

and 3rd..we(IA and coward BSF ) captured BD(east pakistan) before within weeks even fighting a two front war..so don't try to boast your muscle when you are outnumbered by a large neighbour..peace..

Hey Genius,we dont have IA in Bangladesh border.

WooW...Can you please explain the purpose of USA putting their troops in Indo-Bangla border or is it your mental masturbation?

Secondly, what will USA get by supporting Bangladesh and going against india?

(I know logic is the last thing to expect from you guys...just want to get a reply from you to make my Sunday afternoon less boring and more funny)

.
lol ... you are clearly a naive in foreign affairs ....
let me explain you in this way ...

being a democarzy nation and less will of indian corrupt political leaders of influencing national affairs of surrounding little insignificant countries like yours ... china has free hand to put you guys in thr basket ...
so its a great news as USA military base in BD will certainly alarm chinese military facing india in tibbetan platue .. and BD will certainly lose all favors from china... without india having to spent a penny ...
and regarding USA military presence in BD in long term .. you should keep in mind ... India surrounds BD from all sides literary .. no way USA will influence indian strategic view on BD.. in upcoming decades if ever USA comes in way of India... India can certainly match USA for military to military and dollar to dollar...
Geo-political scenarios are never constant or remain the same forever. Look around you; world have changed considerably within last 60 years.

Heck, just focus on this thread; did we ever thought that Bangladesh may suddenly emerge as a strategically important region in the 21st century?

And you can dream about India matching US but keep in mind that US progress is not stagnant. And God knows, what issues will you guys face in the near future. Rivalry with China will surely have repercussions, mind you.

Just I would like to add for now Bangladesh has rejected this report saying it is fabricated....N I also personally believe that there will be any visible US presence at the BoB before 2020-2030....

Bro, never underestimate a Giant - Old or New.

Russia is again gaining prominence at global stage. So we have a decent example.

I would suggest positive relationship with both USA and China.

Pakistan's geo-political scenario is vastly different from that of Bangladesh. US have no issues with Bangladesh. But a political miscalculation can change this.

Their is one thing about India that I always admire; political competence

.
Since the US base issue is running on multiple threads, I am posting the same post on all related threads:

China may be the future hyper power of the world in about 30-50 years, but at this moment it is not. Today that position belongs to the US. Also as a country Bangladesh has two economic pillars, Garments exports and remittance from migrant workers. Garments market is mainly in the US/West and migrant workers or expats are mainly in US allied and protected GCC states as well as US/West. Chinese economy now is around 7.4 trillion, whereas US/West economy is around 34 trillion. So the choice is obvious, beggars cannot be choosers.

Like the gentleman from US said in his post, the US will leave when Bangladesh asks them to leave, so I see no reason why Bangladesh cannot give the US a base, if they ask for it for their Asian Pivot policy:
America's Pacific Century - By Hillary Clinton | Foreign Policy
Obama pivots policy toward Asia | Stanford Daily

http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/R42448.pdf
US Asian pivot calls for Japanese strategic response | East Asia Forum
Pacific pivot: America

I think the pivot policy will eventually fail, as China cannot be contained like Soviet Union and it will not break apart like Soviet Union. Essentially it will be just one more failed foreign policy blunders by State Dept. But that is another story. For that please look at:

http://www.defence.pk/forums/world-affairs/180755-geopolitics-asean-region.html

But in the short and medium term, we can make lemonade out of a lemon, work with the US to:

- reduce RAW/Indian interference in Bangladesh
- keep Bangladesh secure against Indian threats (water terrorism, border violence, defaming Bangladesh as a terrorist infested state etc.)
- improve relation with Myanmar and make the road connection a reality (which is also a US-China convergence of interest)
- become a full member of ASEAN

China will always remain our close neighbor. When we want to improve our relationship with China, if the ASEAN+ project fails for some reason, we can always ask the US to leave and give the base to China instead. But ideally I would like to see that we succeed as a part of ASEAN+ union, instead of becoming a vassal state or pawn of China and see Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia ships replacing US ships, when the ASEAN+ union takes off.

Our media sucks to be honest.

Indian Army is not deployed on the borders with Bangladesh and to be honest IA doesnt indulge in such things. If i have to be really honest here i would say that the track record of BSF has not been very good in the Pakistani border as well..IA is very different. The situation in the Indo-Bangla border would have been somewhat different if the IA would have been deployed.
