Here's the math. According to the U.S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)--there is an average of 293,066 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year.

There are 525,600 minutes in a non-leap year. That makes 31,536,000 seconds/year. So, 31,536,000 divided by 293,066 comes out to 1 sexual assault every 107 seconds.

When do sexual assaults occur?
According to the U.S. Department of Justice's NCVS study, rates of sexual assault (meaning, the number of victims per 1,000 people age 12 or older) fluctuate depending, in part, on the time of year. Summer has the highest rates of rape and sexual assault, while winter and fall the lowest. From 1993-2010, rape and sexual assault rates were on average 10% lower in the fall than the summer, 9% lower on average in the winter, and 6% lower on average in the spring.2

The Unvictims

Sexual assault has fallen by more than 50% in recent years.3

Had the 1993 rate held steady, about 9.7 million Americans would have been assaulted in the last 20 years.

Thanks to the decline, the actual number of victims was about 4.2 million. In other words, if not for the progress we've made in the last 20 years, an additional 5.5 million Americans would have become victims of sexual violence.

While we should be happy that we’re making progress, we are still a very long way from solving this problem. Every two minutes, another American is sexually assaulted.

Actually over 15 times worse
Please...

In your India, marital rape is legal and it pretty much occurs daily, according to your own human rights and women's rights organizations.

Reporting in Hindu, BBC and Scroll on “Under-reporting of violence against women” | r.i.c.e.

You should consider yourself and India lucky that American standards for sexual assaults are not applicable in India.

Rape is non-consensual sexual intercourse. Criminalizing rape is a different issue. Criminalizing marital rape is also a different issue. In your India, your own government felt that criminalizing marital rape would make the Indian family structure collapse.

...if the marital rape is brought under the law, the entire family system will be under great stress and the Committee may perhaps be doing more injustice.
The US is not perfect, but we certainly do not look to India to establish standards for our social ills, especially when your own problems are even worse than your laws care to consider.

I wonder when these d!ck measuring contest going to stop..

.
but in reality, India is far worse. By posting about rape in America would not save you. A woman is safer at night in the ghettos of LA than in anywhere in new dehli
Thats a lie. Thats just a statement without fact.

. . .
For sexually assaulting woman mans p***is should be cut off. in Indian subcontinent most are unreported and in west they keep silent .

. .
There is a lot of transparency in the United States. We forget that in the subcontinent that if a women does get raped, she is often too embarrassed to file a report.
Very cheap move by the OP, who doesn't understand ground realities. No, the subcontinent is not a mini-Eden compared to the USA. If you want proof, just make a trip here instead of flinging mud from far shores. Even worse when you're living in Australia... pathetic...

Even sweden have more rape per capita than in India, would you feel safer to walk alone in India or in Sweden if you are a girl?

Well my friend India is a huge country, and i am sure you know our population...... Yes there are issues here and there ( i am not saying they are not serious) but assuming that India is not safe for women is absolutely nonsense..... There are several places which is not safe...... similarly most of the places are safe...... I get a feel that the western propaganda was stronger than i imagined.......

well, its not about me shaming or finger pointing or even shifting of blame like the OP intended.

You simply cannot use crime per capita to say a particular place is somewhat safer from a particular crime. Australian gun crime is a lot more per capita than New Zealand or even the US for a single year, yet Australian gun law is pro gun control while US and NZ have a more liberal gun law. does that mean its Easier to get guns and committ crime in Australia than in the US and NZ?

There are no proponganda as these two have no relation and this is a simple preception of a country, again, would hou think Its safer to walk alone in Stockholm or in Delhi?

If the west start victimize India, then yes, i would have said propanganda was involve, but they dont, in fact, Indian tourism authority have just finish running a tourist campaign in Sydney train that promote visa free travel to India...
