Eskayef Pharmaceuticals, one of the leading drug manufacturing companies of the country, has successfully produced Remdesivir, the drug used to treat coronavirus. All procedures for production have been completed and preparations have begun from Friday (today) morning for distribution of the drug.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Eskayef, Simeen Hossain, speaking to Prothom Alo, said at this crucial time in the country, we are happy to give the people the good news that we have successfully completed all the steps in the manufacturing of Remdesivir, globally recognised as the only effective drug against coronavirus.

This drug, manufactured by US company Gilead Sciences Inc, has created a sensation all over the world. Last week, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Remdesivir as a drug against coronavirus. The drug administration in Japan gave its permission on May 7 to use this drug on coronavirus patients. However, a health official there informed Reuters that it has not been determined as yet when Japan will begin the manufacture of this drug. It has been learnt that Gilead Sciences is negotiating with large companies in India and Pakistan regarding the manufacture of Remdesivir. Eskayef is the first drug manufacturing company in the world to successfully manufacture generic Remdesivir. The brand name for Remdesivir manufactured by Eskayef is Remivir.

Simeen Hossain said, the drug administration gave its approval in March to use this drug. "Immediately after that, our formulation scientists started working on the development of Remdesivir from mid-March. As this is an injection to be administered intravenously, the production process is extremely sensitive. The tireless and relentless efforts of the Eskayef personnel over the past two months have made it possible to produce the drug within such a short time span. From Eskayef we are fully committed to make sure that our Remdesivir is available for the patients in Bangladesh first. We are ensuring availability of sufficient raw materials by having agreement with API supplier," she said.

Remdesivir so far has been proven to be the most effective in the treatment of coronavirus disease or Covid-19. Experiments carried out by Gilead have indicated improvements in the conditions of the patients who have been treated with this drug.

The drug is to be administered intravenously. The dosage depends in the condition of the patient. Severely affected patients may need to be treated with drug for 5 to 10 days.

Gilead has the patent for the manufacture of Remdesivir, but in accordance to international trade laws, countries like Bangladesh, recognised by the UN as lesser developed countries, are not restricted by the patent. As a result, these countries can produce the drug at a reasonable cost. The drug, however, will not be released in the open market for the time being. It will be provided to the government-approved hospitals for coronavirus treatment.

In a discussion at the White House, the top US immunologist and director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAD), Anthony Fauci, said that it was evident that Remdesivir had a positive influence on the speedy recovery from coronavirus. He said as there was clear evidence that this drug was effective, there was a moral obligation to inform the public about this.

Eskayef Pharmaceuticals Ltd, a part of the Transcom Ltd headed by Bangladesh's renowned businessman Latifur Rahman, has been manufacturing quality drugs for the past 30 year. Eskayef exports its medicines to 30 countries in the four continents - Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa.

more importantly how did they got the formula of remdesivir is it publicly available?

Yes, the patent is waiverred for all least developed countries upto 2033, according to WTO rules.
For the formula of the said drug, Remdesivir, it is an old drug, actually developed for Ebola virus many years ago. API is sourced from a chinese company and subsequent production of excipient and the drug itself done in-house. Total process is very delicate and only limited numbers of companies can comply with and also can afford it.
In Bangladesh, six companies applied for the approval.
And they are very close to each other for the making of the drug.

The WTO selectively grants such exceptions to patent rule to produce patented drugs, considering the LDC status of a country, for which Bangladesh qualified sometime back (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS)). But given the graduation to middle income status in a few years, Bangladesh will lose the rights to produce patented drugs license free. I know there are 36 some odd LDC countries which qualify, see below.

Obviously - just qualifying does not mean these countries can produce these drugs, they have to have vibrant Pharma Industries like in the subcontinent. Bangladesh, as an LDC - is in a leading position to produce and export Remdesivir as a result.

Who can make Gilead's coronavirus drug, license free?

Gilead Sciences Inc is in talks with chemical and drug makers to produce its experimental drug remdesivir, a potential coronavirus treatment, for Europe, Asia and the developing world, the firm has said.

Its patent gives the U.S. company exclusive rights to make the antiviral. But international trade rules allow nations defined by the United Nations as least-developed countries (LDCs) to ignore the patent and make drugs such as Remdesivir more affordable in their markets.

Here is how production and distribution of Remdesivir would work in less developed countries, under World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.

WHICH ARE THE LEAST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES?

Of the 47 countries in this U.N. category, 36 belong to the WTO and technically qualify for a waiver on drug patents under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).

The above is a great news. Click the link below to read Japan has already approved the use of this medicine to treat CoVID-19 patients. Japan is doing it without first testing with the patients in Japan because of the severe situation.

I hope along with remedies like this, vaccines will also be invented and finally this Satanic CoVID-19 plague will be thrown away to the dustbin of our memory. Pandemics will certainly lose out the battle and humanity will win this time to survive and re-generate itself continuously for the next 1,000 million years, the probable final limit of the existence of lives on Earth.

Remdesivir: Eskayef submits samples to DGDA

Leading pharmaceuticals company Eskayef yesterday submitted samples of remdesivir, the drug used for treating Covid-19 patients, to the deputy chief of the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA).

The reference number of the generic drug with brand name Remivir is SKF/DTL-SAMPLE/2020/14, said a press release from Eskayef, adding that it received DGDA approval on pricing of the drug on April 7.

Once the approval comes from the testing laboratory, the drug will be supplied to the markets in a few days, said the release.

DGDA RELEASE

Meanwhile, the DGDA yesterday sent a press release to the media, clarifying the issue over the production of the drug.

In the press release, signed by DGDA Director Ruhul Amin, the drug administration said it would issue marketing authoritisation certificate to Eskayef for supplying the drug to the market if the result of the samples sent to the laboratory for testing was satisfactory.

PRESS NOTE FROM BEXIMCO

Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited also issued a press note to the media regarding the production of remdesivir.

In the note, it claimed it is the first company to have produced the generic drug in the country.

On Saturday, several newspapers reported that the drug was first produced in the country by Eskayef.

In the note, Beximco said the news was "confusing" and "factually incorrect".

On May 7, Beximco submitted samples of the drug to the DGDA for approval.

The anti-viral drug remdesivir has been proved to fight against coronavirus infection. It was invented by US-based biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, Inc

Well the more Remdesivir the merrier - that's what I say...

Remdesivir will certainly be used in BD. However, when we have developed the generic of this medicine the original medicine has not yet been able to contain CoVID-19 in its own land, the USA. Thousands of people are dying in the USA, Europe and other countries.

I hope, the medicine will have better effects now that BD is a hot country and the entire world has entered the Spring season and moving towards Summer. The virus seems to be weak in hot weather. I have read somewhere that some of the patients in the USA (?) have been treated with artificial Sun rays penetrated inside the body. And the patients recovered.
