Jatiya Party Chairman, Hussein Muhammad Ershad has laid bare his formula to save democracy in Bangladesh -- the creation of an all-party interim government to oversee the national elections.

The committee will contain lawmakers of all major political parities.

Ershad out up this proposal when he called on Congressman Steve Chabot, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs sub-committee on Middle East & South Asia on Wednesday (local time).

The former military dictator said the 'all party interim government’ should contain no more than 11 members – all chosen from members of parliament representing different parties.

He told Chabot that the US must play a major role is ensuring smooth elections in the interest of protecting democracy in Bangladesh.

The JP Chairman is expected to discuss his ‘formula’ with leading members of the parliament when he returns to Bangladesh.

BNP would not participate in elections without a caretaker government and Awami League-led alliance cannot return to the caretaker provision after the constitutional amendment , Ershad reportedly told Chabot.

The meeting took place at 12 noon local time in Capitol Hill in Washington DC.

JP Presidium Member Ziauddin Bablu, who was present at the meeting, later revealed details to bdnews24.com.

Chabot enquired about the protests at Shahbagh and was told that happened because the people were taken aback by one of the verdict of the war crimes tribunals.

Bangladesh was one of the partners of the US in its current war against terror , said Steve Chabot. “Bangladesh already has gained massive success in eradicating terrorism,” Chabot said.

Ershad had discussed bilateral issues with US Congress Counter Terrorism and Intelligence sub-Committee Chairman Peter King on Feb 12.

On Feb 8, he met Assistant Foreign Secretary (on South Asia) Robert O Blake.
