Turkish coup pilot’s F-16 fighter jet which was to shoot down President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s plane on July 15 ran out of fuel and was forced to turn back and refuel, Turkish media reported Thursday.

Erdoğan’s jet changed its direct route to Istanbul over information of sharp moves by F-16 jets abducted by the coup pilots and the plane circled the skies of the northwestern district of Bandırma for around half an hour as a precaution, Yeni Şafak news daily was quoted by Hurriyet as reporting.

This was reportedly when an F-16 flying above Istanbul’s Bosphorus recognized the Gulfstream model plane carrying Erdoğan and turned towards it.

The F-16 ran out of fuel as it came within missile range and turned back, Yeni Şafak said.

The garrison commander in Dalaman, Maj. Murat Selçuk Çol, prepared the plane in extreme secrecy, shutting down all lights on the tarmac to prevent any other aerial vehicles from landing, while pilots loyal to the state prevented Erdoğan’s flight information from leaking to the coup plotters, the news daily reported.

This despite the coup plotters having secure/captured 4 air to air refuellers? You'd have thought that they would have ensured this F-16 with the mission it had was properly fuelled.

such bull shiit. His passenger jet had defensive systems similar to DRFM type. Some reports suggest he even got a few from the Russians as he is paranoid and doesn't trust the US. But regardless, his jet simulated his radar signature and frequency of a commercial regional airliner (smaller commuter planes) that was flying elsewhere in Turkey, which they had encountered when they were flying to Istanbul. So the F-16 pilot was confused and didn't want to shoot down a commercial passenger plane that would bring the entire world against them the next day.

Even the air-traffic controller allowed the landing knowing its the commercial passenger airliner under distress like an emergency landing. Otherwise, imagine, even a helicopter being operated by the other side could've taken the passenger plane down with an AAM had they known that he was in there. It is also said that an entire Russian platoon of special forces was protecting him and those were the guys who fought with the other side until his military loyalists and the public got to the airport.

True, his plane had the radar signature of a Turkish Airlines (Türk Hava Yollari) plane.
