Erdogan invokes document that claims Mosul as Turkish soil

ISTANBUL, Turkey (Kurdistan24) – Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan invoked on Monday an early 20th-century irredentist document that claimed the Iraqi city of Mosul as Turkish soil.

Erdogan’s remarks came amid thecommencement of a long-anticipated operation by the Iraqi Army, Kurdistan’s Peshmerga Forces and the US-led Coalition to liberate Mosul from the Islamic State (IS).

In Mosul “a history lies for us. If the gentlemen desire so, let them read the Misak-i Milli (National Oath) and understand what the place means to us,” Erdogan declared.

The Turkish president referred to an Ottoman Parliament-sealed, 1920 pact that designates Kirkuk and Mosul as parts of Turkey.

Erdogan was speaking to the International Law Congress in Istanbul, according to the Kurdistan24 bureau there.

The Turkish President vowed his country would join both the Mosul operation that began in the morning and any talks regarding the Iraqi city’s fate in the aftermath of its capture from IS.

Iraq, Turkey, and the then colonial power of Great Britain agreed in a 1926 Ankara Pact that Iraq should keep the possession of Mosul in light of recommendation by an investigative commission of the League of Nations Council.

“They say Turkey should not enter Mosul. Come on! How do I not enter? I have a 350 kilometers (217 miles)-long border with Iraq. And I am under threat from that border,” the Turkish President said.

“They tell us to withdraw from Bashiqa. Nobody should expect us to do so,” he added.

Turkey has a military base near the town of Bashiqa just 15 kilometers (10 miles) north of Mosul despite strong condemnations and calls for withdrawal by the Iraqi Government.

“It is impossible for us to remain outside [the Mosul equation],” said Erdogan adding Turkey told the US it would not be “responsible” for outcomes of any operation it did not take part.

All the ground combat forces joining the Mosul Operation are Iraqis, according to an online announcement by General Stephen Townsend of the US’ task force in the fight against IS.

Erdogan also warned the US his country would not cooperate with the International Anti-IS Coalition if Americans did not clear the “terrorist” Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) from the Syrian town of Manbijwest of the River Euphrates.

“Under the pretext of [IS], Syria and Iraq are facing a huge destruction in the result of operations participated by 63 nations,” concluded Erdogan.

Dreaming is free, so why not?
Dream? We are in Iraq, already conducting airstrikes. Who knows, what's next?

"If the coalition forces do not want Turkey, then we will put our Plan B into force,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said during a speech in the Central Anatolian province of Konya on Oct. 14.

“If that also does not work, then our Plan C will go into force.” added Erdoğan."

I believe, Toollah's will learn what dreaming is. Then for some ignorants that map isn't accurate.

Don't rush it. It's not very hard to bully a country who is already busy fighting a strong terrorist group in its borders. When ISIS is kicked out of Mosul, you will see whose word holds more weight. If Iraqis don't want you inside their borders, you WILL leave and if they agree with it, you will sign an agreement with them, as simple as that. You can go all the way to plans X, Y and Z.

The era of such things are over unless some circumstances. If we had millions of ethnic turks in Iraq and they were in Musul we could have used a pretext such as protecting our people - as Russia used in kırım(crimea). But even then it would have huge international condemnation and I don't support it for the long term.

There are a few factors that decide priorities of a country that follows her interests; one of which is military and development in your defence industry.

Considering the Turkey and compare Turkey with neighbouring countries, No one can claim to beat Turkey in respect to the Military industry and therefore triumph in a war.

That explains how and why USA, Russia or new born China seek for global benefits over weak countries.

I would consider your mourning, if it wasn't a place where toollah's, terrorist's, sect's, ethnicities, foreign armies, militia's, smuggler's, gangster's run free and wild.

If Iraqis don't want you inside their borders,
Exactly "if". Besides, I don't think Syrian's want you inside their borders and it isn't "if".

What we do in Iraq, everything we do there is in agreement with legitimate gov of Iraq, it's not hard to swallow that. And we haven't bullied Iraq even once, we did nothing but helping them fight ISIS terrorists, we don't have any stupid plans to occupy Iraq's territory unlike Erdogan who is now officially talking about occupying Iraq's lands by showing a stupid map, trying to play an Ottoman sultan, effectively acting like a spoiled brat.

There is no problem with Turkish military presence inside Iraq's soil as long as there is an agreement for it. Iraq's PM invited Erdogan to show ANY proof or agreement that allows Turkey to participate in Mosul battle, and instead of doing it, Erdogan ended up showing a stupid map claiming Iraq's territiry. It's not very hard to guess who is telling the truth here.

What about the Turkmens in Northern Syria and Iraq. If I have read correctly, they have been abused by all parties involved and Turkeys entrance could be justified in order to protect their rights?

i would love turkey to take back what was stolen from her.

Turkeys should get lost from Iraq immediately. Iranian missiles should help Iraqis and target turkish forces. If turks want to enter Iraq they should have Iraqi visa. Iraq belongs to Iraqis.

Saddam is gone and Iraqis don't need occupiers or turks in their own country anymore.
