According to a study, the Kalabagh Dam will have the capacity of generating 3,600MW of electricity which will save $4 billion annually for the country, excluding the 30 percent line losses. ILLUSTRATION: JAMAL KHURSHID

ISLAMABAD: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) yesterday announced that it has completed the detailed engineering design of the Kalabagh dam project, in the light of observations and concerns of the provincial government.

An official of the Ministry of Water and Power said that the efforts of the government to develop a consensus among all the provinces has not been fruitful and work could commence only after it had been reached.

“Kalabagh Dam would guarantee sufficient and cheap electricity,” said the official adding that thermal power costs Rs16 per unit, where as hydel power costs Rs2.5 to Rs3 per unit.

“The big dams are needed to overcome the issue and the country would suffer severe water crisis if they were not built,” he added.

According to a study, the Kalabagh Dam will have the capacity of generating 3,600MW of electricity which will save $4 billion annually for the country, excluding the 30 percent line losses.

Meanwhile according to a conservative estimate, about 30 million acre foot water is being wasted into the sea because of absence of big water reservoirs and the dam was causing the country a loss of Rs132 billion annually.

“The recent floods in Pakistan caused more than $45 billion loss which could have been averted if big dams were operational,” the official said.

The site of Kalabagh Dam Project is located at 210km downstream of Tarbela Dam and 26km upstream of Jinnah Barrage on the river Indus.

. . .
Can't the Punjab unilaterally build it after some more design changes so that it falls solely in the Punjab & we wouldn't be required to obtain permission from any other province ? :(

Dear its geographical location you cant build the dam every where. Kala Bagh is almost naturally built thats why it will take only 5 years to complete the project where as similar size dams are normally constructed in 10-15 years time period.
Issue with Sindh opposition is that they dont want the dam to be constructed over Indus river because as per their propaganda it will allow Punjab to steal the water of Indus river.
KPK oppose Kalabagh because they say that it Nowshehra will be flooded once this dam is constructed.

Both of these issues can be sort out technically and all engineers and experts have already proved both of these theories absolutely baseless. But who can handle those bunch of politicians who's political shops run over the anti-Punjab agenda?

As far as i have studied following solutions can be put forward to reach a consensus to build the Kalabagh dam.

1. Construct some more new Military installations along with Armored Centre Nowshehra, so to negate this theory that it is a plan of Punjabi establishment to Drown Nowshehra.
2. Rename the name of the Dam to some Sindhi or Pashtoon liking.
3. All revenues to be given to KPK and Sindh governments as per some agreed on formula.
4. Administration of Dam to be handed over to majorly people belonging to KPK and Sindh provinces.
5. Provisions of Canals to be temporarily postponed from the dam, initially the dam should be constructed only as a reservoir and power plant and all the release water to be given to Sindh only.

May be something could be worked out like given international guarantees (World bank etc.)

Aside Kalabagh, they should do some planning to build dams that can save water and generate electricity in Sindh, Balochistan, KPK and in Punjab and Kashmir as well.

We must name it Rahmat ul lill Aalameen saww Dem rather then Kala Bhag Dam.

People will not raise Question on Rahmat Ul Lill Aaleem Dam.

It would be a very sad day for the federation of Pakistan if the provinces will take the International guarantee over each other reservations and concerns . So lets work it out amongst ourselves , this dam must be built , because if we take the Sindh logic then every dam gives the power to the respective province to steal the water at any time . But it doesn't work like that ever , this is nothing but tactics to get vote , what do the illiterate and corrupt to the core politicians even understand about " dams " except that it stores water ?

.
Did somebody ask you abt it? piss off ..

Another thing ... provide electric connections to half of your country while you are at it.
Well we are building these dams but you guys are doing nothing but crying.

Secondly we are the 3rd largest producer of electricity in the world and another 80000 MW is under construction.

From KPK they also have concerns. They think it will sink the charsada I guess. BTW charsada is flooded every year by this flood water they are not allowing to store in Kalabhag dam

There are people in Karachi who have never been anywhere in Pakistan outside Karachi, for them Punjab is like Saat Samander par Land jahan foreigner rehtey hain aur wo hamara haq martey hain, and they will oppose Kalabagh Dam even if it doesnt effect them one bit. @Secur will have issue with what I am saying because he has been to Hyderabad too
