NEW DELHI: The Modi government on Tuesday slammed election in Gilgit and Baltistan and stated that the exercise is an attempt by Pakistan to deny the people of the region their political rights and efforts being made to absorb these territories.

"India's position is well known. The entire State of Jammu & Kashmir which includes the regions of Gilgit and Baltistan is an integral part of India," MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup asserted.

The election in Gilgit and Baltistan on June 8 under the so called "Gilgit Baltistan Empowerment and Self Government Order" is an attempt by Pakistan to camouflage its forcible and illegal occupation of the regions.

"We are concerned at the continued efforts by Pakistan to deny the people of the region their political rights, and the efforts being made to absorb these territories," remarked Swarup.

The fact that a Federal Minister of Pakistan is also the "Governor of Gilgit Baltistan" speaks for itself, noted the spokesperson.

Unfortunately in recent times the people of the region have also become victims of sectarian conflict, terrorism and extreme economic hardship due to Pakistan's occupationary policies, alleged MEA.

First time I am seeing a sensible move from Indian Government. WE should make more noise about our area occupied by Pakistan. As per the UN the whole province of princely state of J&K illegally occupied by Pakistan should be handed over to India.

Pakistan should honor UN's resolution.

Indian government should treat this at priority and get our land back....

Kashmir is important for both India and Pakistan, not for geo-political reasons, but for strategic and resource reasons. There are many rivers originating in Kashmir that nourish both Pakistan and India, therefore, to give up claim of their respectively administered region would be extremely adverse to the immediate and even the extended region.
Thus, no one should expect the other party to relinquish claim on the region that they hold. However, the situation can't go on forever like this; Pakistan and India, are both poor countries (whatever that might do for your respective patriotic egos), and can't afford to continue arms race with each other perpetually, while using proxies against each other (let's be honest, both countries do so in order to parry an out right war).
So, what can be done in this regard? Nationalism, patriotism, political popularity and personal egos will only continue this cycle of bad-blood between these neighbours that can achieve exponential growth and progress working as economic partners. My opinion is to keep the LOC as the dividing line between the two countries. Make it the international border, de-militarise Kashmir, and deploy civilian police in the region, each keeping order in their respective area. The administration arrangement could be that of Britain and China regarding Hong Kong. A representative from the Pakistani administered region can be the chairperson for the entire Kashmir for a period, after that a chairperson from the Indian side can do the same. But of course this arrangement would require a whole deal of effort and pride swallowing from both sides. Substantial motivation needs to be generated to make this happen.

The territory is not under Pakistani occupation, just for your knowledge GB was an independent country after liberating from India for 15 after which it became a part of Pakistan, as per the wish of the local mirs and leaders. That level of stupidity, how is this an occupation. Gbians are proud to be a part of Pakistan. Hell , i'm a Gilgiti, do pinpoint the exact location where i can find this effing occupation.
