Egypt Becomes 2nd Customer for Gowind Corvettes

Information on which variant the EN is getting hasn't been released, however, what has been released is a few specifications.

It will be 2.3-2.5 tonnes, have a heli deck, will be able to accommodate SF and their equipment, armed with Mica and Excocet B-III, ASW torps have not beeen confirmed.

Gowind Corvettes - Naval Technology

The 1,000t Gowind action corvette (Deterrent Warrior) is equipped with a suite of anti-air and anti-surface sensors and weapons systems including air defence and anti-ship missiles.

The 2,000t Gowind presence corvette (High Seas Master) has a sustained capacity for long-range intervention and long periods at sea.

The 2,000t Gowind control corvette (Sovereignty Enforcer) is designed for patrol and sovereignty enforcement in littoral and exclusive economic zone (EEZ) waters

The 2,000t+ Gowind combat corvette (Multi-Mission Combattant) is equipped with full-scale mission systems for multi-threat response including a full anti-submarine warfare (ASW) suite with a towed array sonar.

In March 2014, France’s La Tribune reported that Egypt was about to become DCNS’ 2nd customer for their new Gowind Combat Corvette, with plans to order 4 ships in a EUR 1 billion (about $1.38 billion) deal.

The China State Ship Building Corporation is working with Egypt in building a new shipbuilding and repair yard capable of producing large (frigate sized) military and civilian vessels, This won't be completed and active till 2020-2023 though.

There isn't much talk about new frigates except for rumors about a possible procurement of two FREMM or MEKO frigates (possibly used). For now the Navy seems content in procuring smaller vessels (with a lot of firepower though) such as the (4) Ambassador MKIII (500t) and (4-6) Gowind Combat Class (2500t) to replace old missile boats and possibly 2 Descubierta Class corvettes.

Who's paying for this? And is Egypt getting Dolphin submarines? This article confused me, or are they saying Egypt's getting U-209's to counter Israeli dolphin threat?

And they are thinking about getting two more for total of six.
