Egypt walked out of a round of global nuclear talks in protest Monday, saying other nations are not acting quickly enough to establish the Middle East as a zone free of nuclear weapons.

A statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said the nation ended its participation in two weeks of Geneva talks out of frustration that the zone has yet to be created. The talks run through this week.
“We can't wait forever for the implementation of this decision,” said the ministry's statement Monday night, explaining that Egypt’s walkout was meant to send a message to the world that it can no longer accept what it considers to be a lack of seriousness on the issue.

But establishing the Middle East as a zone free of nuclear weapons has long been an elusive goal.
The Geneva talks, which have included no negotiations on such a zone, are meant to prepare for the next major review of the 1970 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty in 2015. Such reviews are held once every five years.

The NPT, which has been signed by 190 nations, is the world’s single most important pact on nuclear arms, credited with preventing their spread to dozens of nations since it was adopted. Israel and Iran, along with North Korea, India and Pakistan, remain outside the treaty.

At the 1995 review, nations adopted the goal of a nuclear-free Middle East, in a concession by the U.S. and others to the Arabs, who wanted Israel to join the treaty and to give up its unacknowledged arsenal of nuclear weapons. In exchange, the Arabs backed the treaty's permanent extension.

But after 15 years of inaction on a nuclear-free zone, Egypt proposed that the 2010 conference endorse launching negotiations to establish one. With no talks started, Egypt said Monday that some other members of the treaty - and non-members - are “obstructing” the goal. Though it did not specify, the reference to non-members was seen as implying Israel.

Ahead of the Geneva talks to prevent the spread of nuclear arms, the U.N. Security Council's five major powers - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - had again called for progress in establishing a nuclear-free Middle East.

So proud of them, there really isn't a point to NPT if the world is hilariously ignoring Israel's nuclear arsenal. How the heck is there a nuclear free middle east when Israel is loaded with nukes? Egypt made the right decision.

It's not the right time for Egypt to obtain nuclear weapons, I hope MP are smarter than this. The only Arab country that's capable of obtaining nuclear weapon is KSA as nobody can sanction it.

They aren't going to obtain nuclear weapons. Do you actually think this move indicates it? I don't really know if they seek to. You know more on the Arab world than me. What do you think?

Only Egypt and KSA are capable.

I think MB would peruse obtaining nuclear weapons, however, Egypt do have and develop Chemical and Biological weapon. As for KSA, it will obtain WMD including Nuke as soon as Iran have it. Some reports say that KSA already have it, but I doubt the credibility of such news. Nevertheless, Israel was going to raid KSA missiles silos 3 times before USA prevented it, yet, those missiles must had unconventional warheads that made Israel try to raid them. Not sure though. @Yzd Khalifa

BE, I don't think KSA will go for it anytime soon. I'm curious to see how that would play it though.

You just don't get tired of trolling do you?

When you're sounding off about some injustice in the middle east, I don't get tired of reminding everyone that you neither live in the middle east nor were born there.

You're an American. Born and bread - using the internet mainly to whip up anti-Israel feelings from your mother's basement in Dearborn.

Yeah, I know Egypt has chemical and biological weapons. And I actually hope both will just go for it right now. Why not. I think the MB might go for it in a few years. You'd bet Israel would have to start taking a peace plan seriously then on. And you can also bet Egypt may also take military action in the future in defense of Gaza if they have a powerful deterrent. There's no way any two countries would use them in the future, but, it is necessary for Egypt to have them.

Aren't you talking about yourself here :ashamed:

Anyway, stick to the topic plz.

Just ignore the rat. He shouldn't be allowed to have a voice. Especially when he preaches Zionism 101. And he projects most if not all the time.

It will go for it whatever it takes, as a nuclear Iran is an existential threat to GCC. I do believe in this.

Is this the same Egypt that has flooded Gazan tunnels with raw sewage? the same Egypt that has kept its border with Gaza closed much more frequently than Mubarak or Israel?

The same Gaza that the Egyptian intelligence accuse of mounting terrorist attacks against Egyptian soldiers?

:omghaha:

You have such a disconnect from reality because you're a foreigner trying to play politics in a region you know little about.

I'd be surprised. You never know though, Iran may back down. There's no evidence still that they're working towards a nuclear weapon. All the reports just indicate that if they take this further step they could possibly build a weapon. All the intelligence community has is 'ifs' and 'ands'.
