Egypt notified that Ethiopia has resumed filling of giant dam

CAIRO, July 5 (Reuters) - Egypt's irrigation minister said on Monday he had received official notice from Ethiopia that it had begun filling the reservoir behind its giant hydropower dam, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), for a second year.

Egypt has informed Ethiopia of its categorical rejection of the measure, which it regards as a threat to regional stability, Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel Aty said in a statement.

Ethiopia says the dam on its Blue Nile is crucial to its economic development and providing power to its population.

Egypt views the dam as a grave threat to its Nile water supplies, on which it is almost entirely dependent. Sudan, another downstream country, has expressed concern about the safety of the dam and the impact on its own dams and water stations.

The volume of the accumulating water would depend on the amount of seasonal rain that fell in Ethiopia, Egyptian Irrigation Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ghanim told a local TV channel.

"We won't see any effect now on the Nile. We have a month or a month and a half ahead of us," he said.

Egypt and Sudan have waged a diplomatic campaign for a legally binding deal over the dam's operation, but talks have repeatedly stalled.

The diplomatic push intensified ahead of the first filling of the dam with last summer, and again in recent weeks.

I think this refers to some diplomatic action of some sort, but Al-Arabiya is vague on that, it can be understood as military movements as well:

How bad is this for Egypt? And what is going on Ethopia? I read that they lost their capital to some rebels a few days ago, is that true?
There isn’t much that Egypt can do, but accept what is being offered to her…and she can’t count on the Arab league..most of the Khalledji have invested interest in the dam as much as Israel..Egypt needs to resort to desalinization plants…and she can forget Lybia’s fresh water reserves since they are in the west near the Algerian border…

Egyptians definitely need to diversify their water sources. Mini dams designed to capture rain water could go a long way plus desalination plants. Relying on the Nile alone is too risky since Uganda is also building dams along the Nile, and South Sudan has blue prints to build dams around the tributaries that direct water to the Nile.

.
it will be suicidal , if they do or try anything silly with there dam water.

.
egypt will not take military action forget that . issue is on table

Ok .what’s this based on. Was it been confirmed by Egypt clown as I’m read reports action is high probability by Cairo if talks fail Ethiopian

The water problem will worsen in the future as many countries that depends on the Nile will build dams.Military solutionsare the least faisable option for Egypt.Ethiopia is a land locked country and with the many foreign military bases in Djibouti, it will be hard , if not impossible for Egypt to use her military might( at least Egypt thinks she has) without international retaliation added to that some minorities in Sudan are in the Ethiopian side and Ethiopia can use them to destabilize Sudan which will have a direct effect in Egypt, since relation between the two are alway rocky…

it is only going to get drier , the future is in water desalination.
