Egypt mulls JF-17 co-production and signs for more F-16s



According to Jane's Defence Weekly (Date Posted: 04-Mar-2010) Egypt is in talk with Pakistan on the co-production of the JF-17. If the deal goes through it will represent a major milestone for this program.

Cairo is in talks with Pakistan to begin joint production of JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft, Jane's understands from Egyptian defence industry sources.

Even as the talks continued regarding JF-17 assembly in Egypt, however, the US Department of Defense announced on 2 March that an initial contract worth some USD213 million had been finalised with Lockheed Martin for Egypt's procurement of additional F-16C/D multirole fighters.

While the number of aircraft Egypt plans to acquire has not been revealed, the inclusion of local assembly in the deal suggests that the contract would be for at least 48 JF-17s.Brigadier General Mohammed Abdul Azim, a senior official at the government-owned Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI), told Jane's on 3 March that negotiations were continuing and that a final contract announcement was not expected for several weeks.

Nice, thanks for sharing the news. The probability of the contract going through seems high, specially considering Egypt is also having an Assembly line for K8s. The brighter side of this news is that these negotiations are held with Pakistan, and if the deal goes through, It will be a major boost for Pakistani defense Industry.

#1 We invested billions in research and development , so why
should we just sell , the R&D just like that to egypt if just for
48 planes ?

#2 Egypt has to invest 1.5 billion if its wants its own assembly facility
in egypt

Hi,

When it is your turn, you want to get everything from usa, france, germany, britain, sweden etc--tot tot tot---and when it comes your turn to gibve, there are issues.

Kid kids kids----pakistan desperately needs to sign one major defence deal to get the ball rolling and you people are crying murder.

Pak millitary consortium will sell its right nut if needed, they will sell their left nut as well if needed to bag this deal. This is a watershed moment for our defence industry. If we make this deal happen, all other doors will open up for our equipment.

Plus egypt is one of our very own---would you charge your brother extra for its defence equipment in times of need. Here we all are bragging of what we will do to israel and right in this very moment---the truth comes out---amazing isn't it what money can do to relations and relationships.

Egypt has restrictions on the usage of its F 16's and the missiles that came with it. Egypt has its hands tied behind its back and we want to charge them extra.

This news being in janes, is a great plus for the JF 17 and its future sale---.

1) Why do u think its a bad idea to sell the thunders with an Assembly line???

2) The 48 planes mentioned here are only the first batch. The total order for thunders by Egypt is estimated around 200-250 birds. Even If that figure is divided by half, they still deserve a production facility.

3) Why should they invest billions and get nothing out of it. They do want to get some sort of ownership and decrease their dependency on others. The rule applies every where in the world, If we don't comply some buddy else will take our position and we will keep on rubbing our hands.

4) Assembly line does not mean that all core technologies will be completely transferred. The cost of the deal will eventually determine the level of tech transfer. If you think it was so easy then why is it taking years to finalize the deal??

6) A big order customer will improve the image of thunders, it will increase the confidence of future and potential customers in its abilities. And it can help build a strong brand Image which is very important in the defense sector.

7) Providing Egypt an assembly line will also decrease the work load on the original producers. Spears and services for the regional countries can be handled by them. They can also work in to Fulfill orders from Middle Eastern and some African countries. Thus a win win situation in every aspect.

8) Lastly we invested billions in its making but we need billions to improve it to the desired level for future. It is of utmost importance that we ensure to sell them and sell them in large numbers so as to provide and generate necessary resources for keeping the wheal of R&D spinning.

What exactly has egypt every bought from Pakistan the other day they invited india and gave it exclusive rights to bring its war ships in the red seas ???

Why is there such a hurry to give TOT to Egypt for Penuts the problem I find with our negotiator is that our negotiators are always keen to give the kitchen sink as gift for 1 rupee - 2 rupee they can never negotiate a fair deal for price

If the order is range of 200-300 planes for Egypt - with 1-2 Billion dollar for our defence industry I would understand the logic

Or just open a new production facility in PAKISTAN

Hire more engineers in Pakistan - it will increase our own national production as well from 30 planes to 40-50 planes a year

We should be proud of our achievement (with Chinese assistance ofcourse). This deal will result in more budget which could then be utilized in R&D for other blocks of JF-17. i.e. JF-17 Blck-II-III etc and other future projects.

That is not possible, Its Egypt who is in need, not Pakistan, Plus Indians do not have an alternative to convince them otherwise.

oh finally export orders.Not only we should give them TOT but should also try our very best to get this deal through.It will be a big Image Booster for Pakistan.

I have heard that Egyptian F-16s cannot carry BVR by license restrictions is it true.?

its assembly not transfer of production technology......and BTW I can still remember a chinese poster indicating that some "customer is negotiating for 100 jets"....and if egypt orders like 100 (48 is indicated as minimum) we should know that greater the
production...lower the per unit fix (development cost) and thus the unit price....so lets say that Eygpt orders 100 AC and each cost about lets say 10 Mio in development.....so egypt already covers 100 Mio development cost or 20% of overall development cost....so IMO good enough to transfer ToPT

few things comes in mind first they only ask for assembly line not the development line so thats mean parts will be developed in Pakistan and china. only assembled there and we also need money for R&D for the next blocks of JF-17. It will also refine our birds just like f-16.

Hi,

Pak defence industry has to find a way to break these chains---it is teethering on the brink for a long long time---so close and so far away---JF 17 will end up as a major major project both for china and pakistan.

Once we make this breakthrough, orders for other equipment will folow through. The joint ventures with china will pay the dividends---as the chinese banks may also be involved in financing those purchases.

I believe that we invested about 500 millions for this plane.
