'We want to restore relations between the two countries on the principles of respect for sovereignty and people's will,' Egypt's foreign minister says
World Bulletin / News Desk

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said Thursday that Egypt is willing to restore close relations with Turkey.

"We want to restore relations between the two countries on the principles of respect for sovereignty and people's will," Shoukry said in an interview.

Egypt's top diplomat noted that Egypt seeks to have positive relations with world countries, and Turkey is definitely one of them. He also expressed hope to see close ties with Turkey just as it was before, citing historical bonds between Egyptian and Turkish peoples.

Relations between Turkey and Egypt have deteriorated after military coup d'etat against country's first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi.

Egypt’s top diplomat expects better relations with Turkey

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has said his country hopes for better ties with Turkey.

Diplomatic relations between the formerly close countries have been on ice since current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the former leader of the country's military, ousted Mohamed Morsi, the first civilian leader to be democratically elected in the modern history of Egypt.

“We hope that Egyptian-Turkish relations will return to normal to when their ties were based on mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs,” Shoukry was quoted as saying by the Hürriyet daily in a TV interview late Wednesday.

The Egyptian military has since mounted a crackdown on Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood (MB), imprisoning thousands of people in a succession of operations targeting the Islamist group and its supporters. A scorched-earth assault against a protest camp in Cairo in August 2013 left nearly 1,000 MB supporters dead, sparking international outrage.

Erdoğan's Turkey was an outspoken critic of the military junta that ruled Egypt following the military coup d'état before a new election brought Sisi to the presidency. Speaking to reporters on a plane when returning from a visit to Iran, Erdoğan once again touched on the thorny issue that has strained ties between Cairo and Ankara, demanding the release of Morsi.

Ankara has refrained from recognizing Sisi's presidency and has frozen ties with Cairo, which has accused Turkey of meddling in its internal affairs.

After Egypt's massive Arab spring , it was sad to see the government toppled so understand where is Turkey is coming from, 22 or 25 years under military (with no real progress in Egypt) other then aid money and tourist money

Holy crap the AKP under Davutoglu is slowing cleaning up Erdogan's mess. Perhaps out of neccesity but this is still a huge step at strenghtening our influence and countering Russia and Iran. You can see how politics really work, allies and enemies are made in a day's time.

We lost Russia but gained Israel and Egypte. This is just getting better by the day.

Russia is much more stragetic than Israel and Egypt.

No. WTF is Russia ? Nukes make it not a strategic partner.
For Turkey, which is supported by the United States and Europe, Russia isn't more valueable ally than Israel and Egypt.
The level of cooperation between Russia and Turkey never would've been the same to the level of cooperation between Russia and India for that matter.
Share of technology between Israel and Turkey will be much higher than what it would've been with Russia.

Russias strategic importance has no benefit for Turkey at all, if anything then its an obstacle for Turkish interests.

I couldn't write it better.

Russia is a third world category state no democracy or compatible industry and is comparable to India.
India could be working ants for Russia.

Russia's populations decreases they should import Indians for their blondes and tired man.

Russia has absolutely no strategic value for Turkey, its an obstacle if anything else. Aside from Natural gas Russia has absolutely nothing to offer Turkey, and it never did. Whilst Egypte and Israel are all in the former ottoman sphere of influence. Being allies with them serves our purpose much better then Russia which is completely against our interests and is even supporting Bashar and Iran.
