ECP can amend nomination papers: SC

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News):-The Supreme Court while issuing interim order regarding Electoral Reform Case said that the Election Commission is authorized to make an amendment in nomination papers.

Three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry conducted hearing of the aforesaid case and said the Supreme Court already has explained and interpreted the article 218 of the constitution.

The interim order further said that the Election Commission should take affective measures to hold in time elections in the country so that peaceful transfer of power may be made sure according to rule of law.

“The federation should not hesitate in following or implementing the court order”, said Interim Order.

Chief Justice said that the Election Commission also is authorised to make amendment in nomination papers, adding that different sections of the society should avoid disseminating confusions.

During hearing of the case, the Chief Justice remarked as why the Election Commission was deeming itself too weak to tackle legal complexities.

“We are fully backing the Election Commission for free and fair polls for formation of true representative government of the nation”, said Chief Justice.

The Supreme Court also expressed its concerns over non-issuance of funds to the commission.
The court was adjourned for next day.

QUETTA: Armed gunmen on Tuesday shot dead a senior local election official in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, police said, days before parliament is due to dissolve ahead of general elections.

Muhammad Tariq, the Superintendent of Police in Quetta said two armed gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire at the vehicle of Muhammad Ziaullah Qasmi, the District Election Commissioner for Quetta district, in the Munir Mengal road area of the city.

Tariq said Qasmi initially sustained serious wounds, receiving eight bullets to the body.

“Qasmi succumbed to injuries on his way to hospital,” he said.

The driver of the election official was also injured during the attack.

The assailants managed to escape unhurt from the spot.

“The incident seems to be an act of target killing,” said a police official who requested not to be named.

The motive behind the killing could not be ascertained immediately and police were contacting relatives for further details.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the killing, but Balochistan suffers from sectarian violence as well as an insurgency by Baloch nationalists who want greater autonomy for the mineral-rich province.
