Economic development vital to counter China: Gurcharan Das

JAIPUR: "India needs to reform its governance while China its politics," this is the mantra of success suggested by author Gurcharan Das' for the two neighbours today.

Addressing a session titled 'The elephant paradigm, the dragon paradox' at the Jaipur Literature Festival here, he said, "When two of your neighbours happen to be threats, a country has to ensure both economic and military preparedness."

According to him, the rising middle class and use of technology will be key to the 'India story'.

Co-panelist, UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani, also gave cause to sheer saying he remained optimistic about India.

"We have a young population, good entrepreneurs and the knowledge of English and technology - all of which bode well for the country."

However, Peter Hessler, author and former Beijing correspondent of the New Yorker, pointed out that India need not be afraid of its eastern neighbour.

"If you look at China's history, it does not have a culture of finding military solutions to problems," he explained, pointing out it was US who is more likely to engage in such adventurism.

"I am optimistic about China. But the kind of upward economic mobility that ordinary Chinese had in the 90s, that is slowly declining," Hessler said during the session that debated who between India and China will race ahead of the other.

Also, while discussing citizen participation in the country's governance, contrast was made between protesters in India who have been demanding systemic reforms while those in China remain extremely local in nature, not calling for overthrow of the Communist party.

Talking about who will emerge as the final winner between India and China, Das believed that the country who is able to fix its government will be the one that will eventually succeed.

"India needs to reform its governance while China its politics. Whoever is able to do that will win," he added.

I agree , China is one of the most sensible civilizations on the planet but its sensibility goes to dogs while dealing with neighbors.

We haven't had any cross-border killing or bloodshed with any neighbouring country for over 30 years now.

Yes, we have a lot of "diplomatic "conflicts with neighbouring countries. But they are diplomatic issues, there is no cross-border bloodshed.

Countries are already exploring the disputed SCS. Still no cross-border bloodshed in any direction.

Sure, we will respond if our core interests are seriously compromised, but other than that economic development is the first priority.

On topic: Yes China does need political reforms, and economic reforms. Most importantly for me, China needs an independent judiciary, and independent oversight bodies that can provide more accountability and reduce corruption.

Buddy, i wanted to ask this query but never got a chance, how can China claim entire SCS on historical Grounds when it is a signatory of UNCLOS?? Isn't it a bullying tactics??

That's not as high priority as the others, though it would be nice.

We have free media in Hong Kong, and we have some of the shitt*est most anti-national news sources here (the Apple Daily for instance is pure sensationalist crap).

So there are a lot of downsides to it. Maybe in 10-20 years it might be alright to have for the entire country.

That is off-topic, try another thread. As for bullying, our neighbours complain about bullying, so do yours. India says China is being a bully, Pakistan says India is being a bully, now where does it end?

Gurcharan said what he said.
But who in the cabinet is interested in India's development?
Most of what you see as a development, its from private sector.
Indian Government spearheaded by non ethnic stock. alu chalu antonia Maino, Raul, and Biyanka and vadara Have no interest in Indian development, THESE ARE HERE TO LOOT AND PLUNDER INDIA.

So do Shard Pawar, Aloo Prasad Yadav, Mulayam singh Yadav and many of such scoundrels are stabbing our motherland.
China and Chinese people have diginity and national interests - which is lacking big time here in India.
If you want to test a culture of any nation or civilization - check their proverbs, and its here that everyone will find how clever thinking exists in its culture.

Please note that I have worked in HK for 2 years and visited China couple of times and Taiwan 4 times.

That is obviously incorrect .. as China can't bully India.

Such a statement is equivalent to stating that Soviet Union bullied USA during the cold war.
