Baku is on a serious way to become the new Dubai, Azerbaijans GDP per capita is almost same as Turkey, it wont take long till it overtakes it, probably in the next couple years.

In my opinion Azerbaijan is just a secular (and poorer) version of Saudi Arabia: low education, not innovative, wasteful fiscal policy, no sustainable economic development and a dictatorship.

Azerbaijan has the biggest shipyard in the Caspian Sea and will have the biggest port
the orders from Azerbaijan alone are worth billions , and the government just announced they will create a technology park around the current shipyard to provide more competitive industry.

Biggest energy project in the world , that would turn Azerbaijan into an energy hub , exporting not just it's own gas but Iranian and possibly Turkmenistan gas through Trans-Caspian pipeline. ( the project is worth $50 billion+)

Azerbaijan is spending a huge amount of oil revenue on Oil stocks for the times after oil, there are huge investments in industry to diversify the economy, oil is a bonus for economic growth in Azerbaijan, they wont just sit on oil money.

I mean how much gas/oil is being pumped if there are being pumped any. Excuse my ignorance on this subject, i am really in complete darkness when it comes to this pipeline

nearly all of the oil Azerbaijan exports goes through the pipeline , which is almost 50 million tons annually

Shah Deniz-2 project opens over 15,000 jobs

Over 15,000 jobs have been created in Azerbaijan as part of the Stage 2 of developing the Shah Deniz gas and condensate field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

This was announced by Bakhtiyar Aslanbayli, BP’s communications, external affairs, strategy and region vice president on October 15 in Baku.

He made the remarks during the 1st Azerbaijani Conference on Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility - Baku CSR Conference 2015.

The contract for development of the Shah Deniz offshore field was signed on June 4, 1996. The field’s reserve is estimated at 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas.

The shareholders are: BP, operator (28.8 percent), AzSD (10 percent), SGC Upstream (6.7 percent), Petronas (15.5 percent), Lukoil (10 percent), NICO (10 percent) and TPAO (19 percent).

As part of the second stage of the field’s development, gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus gas pipeline and construction of Trans-Anatolian (TANAP) and Trans-Adriatic (TAP) gas pipelines.

Business activities and investments in the future is the basis for development of each company and BP is proud of supporting a number of developing spheres in Azerbaijan, according to Aslanbayli.

“Currently, 2,900 Azerbaijani citizens work at BP, which is the operator in such projects as Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli, Shah Deniz and Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan,” he said. “The majority of them work in Baku. Nevertheless, I would like to mention that the Azerbaijani workforce also works in the US, UK and other countries.”

The regional vice president noted that BP will continue to invest in developing the local personnel.

“In order to attract sufficient number of local resources in the implementation of projects, we have worked out large-scale training programs for local enterprises and workforce,” he said.

Meanwhile, the process of procurement of equipment and services from local suppliers leads to additional employment of the population, stimulates the growth and attracts new areas of business activities to the region, according to Aslanbayli.

BP also calls on its contractors to purchase the necessary equipment, goods and services meeting the relevant specifications from local suppliers, he added.

“In order to promote this [process] we have added related items to our contracts,” said Aslanbeyli.

Azerbaijan to build solar power plant in Germany

Azerbaijan will build a solar power plant in Germany, Akim Badalov, the head of the State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources, told reporters Oct. 20.

He said that the capacity of the plant will be 10 megawatts.

"The contract for the construction of the plant will be signed in the near future,” he said. “The negotiations on the construction of a solar power plant in Turkey are underway."

The Azerbaijani State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources was established upon the presidential decree Feb.1, 2013.

The volume of investments made in the development of the alternative energy sphere in Azerbaijan reached 63.6 million manat in 2014. Of this volume, 34.9 million manat accounted for the development of the solar energy sphere and 28.7 million manat – wind power. In total, around 800 million manats have been invested in this sphere in Azerbaijan since 2000.

Second satellite program to cost over $191M

A second satellite program in Azerbaijan will cost over $191 million, the State Procurement Agency of Azerbaijan reported.

These funds will be spent on the construction of the second geostationary satellite Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 and the purchase of ground satellite equipment.

The second satellite program will be financed with long-term and concessional loans from Export Development Canada.

Canadian Space Systems/Loral, a leading provider of commercial satellites, will build Azerbaijan’s second telecommunications satellite.

The satellite design is based on the highly reliable SSL 1300 satellite platform, which provides flexibility for a broad range of applications and technology advances.

Azerspace-2 is scheduled for launch in late 2017-early 2018. Work on the installation of ground station equipment must be completed no later than 2017, and the ready satellite shipped to the launch site before the end of 2017.

Azerspace-2 will be launched into orbit by a French company, according to Communications and High Technologies Minister Ali Abbasov.

The country’s first satellite was launched on an Ariane 5 ECA carrier rocket from French company Arianespace.

He said that the second satellite would be a part of a new satellite constellation, which includes radar satellites as well. This advantage will allow Azerbaijan to use not only the telecommunications capabilities of the spacecraft, but also enhance its ability to monitor the Earth's surface.

Azerbaijan entered the space club less than two years ago with the launch of the first Azerbaijani telecommunications satellite Azerspace-1, which provide services such as digital television, data transmission, VSAT multi-service networks, and governmental communications.

The total value of the Azerspace-1 project is about $230 million.

Azerspace-2 will be placed in an orbital position of 45 degrees east longitude and the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization rents 45.9 percent of its resources.

Azerspace-2 will cover a service area of Europe, South-East Asia, Middle East and Africa.

The geostationary satellite Azerspace-2 will be equipped with Ku- and Ka-band transponders, designed to provide digital broadcasting, Internet access, data transmission, the creation of VSAT multi-service networks, and other services.

Moreover, Azerbaijan's satellite operator Azercosmos operates the AzerSky low-orbit satellite.

Azersky has a broad range of applications including defense and security, emergency response, the exploration of natural resources, maritime surveillance, sea faring, environmental protection, urban planning, cartography, and tourism.

The satellite is capable of shooting 6 million square kilometers of the surface of the Earth. The resolution of the images obtained will be 1.5 meters. The satellite will work in orbit for 12 years.

Pictures taken from AzerSky will be used in agriculture, the Communications and High Technologies Ministry reported earlier. The satellite will capture photos of the earth's surface before late 2015.

Pictures will be obtained both from the AzerSky satellite and the Pleiades satellite of the French Airbus Defence and Space Company. The resolution of images obtained from the Pleiades satellite, is 0.5 meters, and 1.5 meters from the Azersky satellite.
