Iranian officials on Saturday celebrated a large turnout in the nation's elections, and touted preliminary results, based on just 3% of the votes cast, showing reformist backers of President Hassan Rouhani in the lead, according to Iranian news outlets.

The tally so far from Friday's elections is based on 1 million votes, a third of those cast in the capital district of Tehran, according to the Mehrs News Agency. Final results will be announced Tuesday, Iran’s Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said, according to the Fars News agency.

Reformists are doing well in early results because 30 of the 48 reformist candidates and their allies are based in Tehran. Elsewhere, "there's not many seats" that reformists are seeking, said Rod Sanjabi, executive director of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center. The election process is monitored by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp rather than independent monitors, he said.

Fazli said 33 million people, more than 60% of eligible voters, participated in elections for parliament and the Assembly of Experts, which is likely to appoint the next supreme leader. Polls opened at 8 a.m. and were supposed to remain open for 10 hours but were extended until midnight to accommodate voters, according to the Tasnim News Agency.

Reformists are ahead of conservatives.......what does it mean ? Does it means like a step towards secularism ?

Winning 29 out of 30 sits (in Tehran) means more than simply 'leading'. I'm already hearing the rumors that they are about to win the 30th place too as more votes are counted.

Not necessarily secularism as it's in direct contrast with an "Islamic Republic", but a much less conservative parliament allied with the current government. Reformists had only 6% in current parliament, but they are about to win as much as 50% in all the country and that would be a huge win, even if it doesn't become a majority.

.
What change victory of reformists can bring? I mean what's impact of current elections?

Let's say it's like Obama with a Democratic majority in Senate and House, rather than the huge headache that Republicans have already became for almost anything his gov wants to do. Although, even the conservative parliament in Iran is not as much of a pain the *** of government as Republicans are for the Obama administration.

It's just in Tehran.
In Iran conservatives are ahead by 60%
reformists and Rohani supporters are 30%,
independents are 10%.

this fake celebration is just a cover for an absolute defeat of Reformists and Rohani's government.
from now on you can expect a much tougher conditions for Rohani.

.
The reformist always get the lead but in the end the mullahs will win!

True..Iran is a religious den

Just a feel good factor...in the end...the mullahs will win

That sounds good.

The world is always in a constant state of change (無常) so it's important to be able to adapt to those changes.

I'll say its better to wait for final result , let not rush anything . by the way I can't get here in Iran the line between reformist and conservative is a little murky , after all its not a party they sign into. When you look at the lists you see many of them that overlapping each other , so I suggest not be happy about Tehran or be happy about other cities.

Yeah, Ali Motahari is suddenly a top reformists. When the reformists are the Motaharis and Larijanis and Rafsanjas,, then, man, wtf?

This list shows that "conservatives", at least the well known ones, have no real fan base. As a fan of Ahmadenijad, I did not vote in this majlis, because I don't trust either side anymore. The so called conservatives became anti-Ahmadenijad during his last two years, because they had no balls, and just wanted to ride the wave.

The principalists tried to cast Ahmadenijad away and recreate themselves, but they are so out of touch with the society, the same way they were out of touch in the last presidential elections. I mean, did Velayati & Haddad-Adel really expect to get enough votes to be president? Did Rezaee really think the 10th time is the charm?

The list is not yet final, but latest data is that Haddad-Adel is 31st! That's more than embarrassing, that's a crushing defeat for their side. I saw more campaigns in the city with Haddad-Adel's face on it then anyone else. Abu Torabifard is 34th. Zakani is 36th. Nabooyan is 52nd.

I am happy these guys got so few votes, and I'm also happy that someone like Aref became first. I'm not a reformist, but I like people sticking to their principles. Aref hasn't been changing colors every few base. Good for him, he deserved it.

Here is an example of what Haddad-Adel said about Ahmadenijad,
روایت حداد عادل از هزینه‌هایی که احمدی‌نژاد به نظام تحمیل کرد

Hope these old principalists learned their lessons, but I doubt it.

By the way, @mohsen, I think the reason conservatives won in non-Tehran cities, is because they didn't sell themselves out as much as the Tehran conservatives. All the loud Anti-Ahmadenijads conservatives were Tehrani politicians.

Now , its time that Conservatives use to youth and put side old politicians ... although , Conservatives get very good results ( they won the election ) ....

and the most interesting thing is that reformist begin to insult none-Tehranis ...some examples :

no wonder why Tehranis are most disliked people in Iran .

come on , an election without Rezaee don't feel like an election. It feel lacking . and about the last part , well I think it has nothing to do with ahmadinejad , I think we must accept that the people of Tehran and people of provinces have different view . even if you look you see different province have their own differences.

The point is that Tehranis see themselves above others and they did something like 2009 and unfortunately , other people are paying the price ...

@Serpentine who says that Rouhani is a Reformist?

Last time i checked he was still a member of "rohaniyat mobarez"

And comparing the conservative party to Republican maniacs is a little off board i think

Just like calling Reformists as British agents
