What's new

DRDO says its Kaveri engine can power combat drones 80 kN of thrust now.

yeah but it only has service ceiling of 15km and i hope no engine failures occur with LCA

Sound like you have a major concern that it would power the next generation of flying coffin. Base on the history of Mig 21, I would concur with your concern. In any case, before creating an engine for the fighter plane first, why not trying on something else. (In term of mass usage, not just a 1 time trial) That way, if something goes wrong on a train or UAV, then it won't be as severed.

I think there is something called testing and verification which is performed on those engines and those drdo guys however inefficient may be knows how to perform those tasks, that is the main reason for drdo to lease test bed.

Great now they want to power UAVs with Kaveri , earlier they want to power ships with it great looks like Kaveri will power everything except LCA .
A little offtopic but can anyone tell me what is the dry and after burning thrust of GE919IN .

when kaveri powered bike is coming? i m eagerl waiting for it

Kaveri can power drones.. but it is too big and too heavy for the power it generates. But hell! 80 Kn engine on a drone; you might as well consider a full fledged UCAV like the movie Stealth.. Supersonic drones. :P

There are many issues.
1. IAF and Army is more interested in Foreign products, coz they get good commission and sometime women.
2. Indian Navy is more concentrating on Indigenous products.

100% agree. Can't believe who'd risk national security for women!! Are we having any shortage of them here in India? :fie:

3. there are very few countries who make powerful jet Engine, Its great to see that we have made 80 KN engine, Be hopeful, more powerful engine are in line.. One can not hit the target in first shot.

Yes but this first shot is becoming too long. 2 decades is too much even by our standards. While all others went ahead with understanding basics and adopting from other established engines, GTRE went ahead with trying to re-invent the wheel from scratch. That's good, but not when our country is surrounded by hostiles with nuclear weapons. Maybe it is good for countries like Australia who can take their sweet time trying and erring since they have no direct threats.

4. As Dhruva is platform for LCH, LCA is platform for AMCA.. K10 will be platform of something bigger... Don't loose hope.

Tejas just put the foundations of aeronautics into the heads of our engineers. AMCA is totally different. And what is K-10?

5. Final word: Always keep Plan B.. LCA was late coz we didn't had plan B, We waited for Kaveri long enough, rather than going RAFAEL way (Rafael used American engine in its prototypes, later they used french engine.. )

We didn't just wait but couldn't even keep a backup engine ally...stupid sarkaris believed US so sincerely that they weren't even allowed to collect their project details from LM office when sanctions were announced. (That's what ADA chief said in the interview). They should have kept back channels with France and Russia in case US sanctioned (it always does in the end).

Hopefully, C-130s and C-17s are not blindly trusted and HAL can hopefully continue making its spares in case US goes uppity again...(though not likely to happen for another 20 years for business sakes).

The funny thing is, for the drone it will be downgraded again, because the 80kN are too much.

The F414-GE-INS6- the most powerful version of the F-414 and can produce 100+ kn of thrust with AB. So they are going to fit a less powerful engine just because it has a "MADE IN INDIA" sticker on it? Is this a professional decision and one that the IAF want or is this a overly political/PR decision? Or are there weight savings on the Kaveri that improves the overall thrust:weight ratio?

look as long as LCA MK2 thrust to weight ratio is over 1 i'm happy whether it be the GE engines or the Kaveri K10 and AMCA better not be delayed because of Kaveri, one of the major reasons for LCA delay was waiting around for the Kaveri engine

Yes and for that exact reason (delays) the two programmer (LCA and Kaveri) were split to run in parallel which is why GE engines power the prototype, Mk.1 and Mk.2 with better engines. If they were still on LCA would be further delayed and on hold. I think if the Kaveri is still no ready by 2020 (AMCA fabrication and prototypes) then DRDO/GTRE will have A LOT to answer for as they say they are ALMOST finished now.

Maybe AMCA prototype get delayed to 2025. Then Kavari would have no reason to be ready for that plane. By 2020, its likely Kavari would meet the requirement of the LCA with the French help.
