Question 1: Why does a faculty member have his own page on wikipedia? There are tens of thousands of faculty members around the world who have similar accomplishments as him. So why such benefits? Now, look at his accomplishments, again copied from wikipedia

Becoming world's top innovator for a bit torrent client and a text message social network? These are softwares that senior year grad students can create. There is nothing 'innovative' about them. But they do have nefarious purposes. Both these systems can be used to hide from government monitoring if you are leading something like a lawyer's movement, or other such uprising. You can rest assured if there is another liberal uprising, it will be backed by his software. This man, because of his academic background, has contacts and prestige amongst some of the brightest minds in the country. If anyone wants to control youth, he is their ideal man.

Again, the first one sounds like an under-grad senior year project. And the next one is disconcerting. A Western mole supervised the computerization of the land records. Such records reveal who has bought what piece of land. With Osama Bin Laden, the CIA needed Shakeel Afridi to collect evidence. Next time the CIA wants to investigate a mansion in Punjab, they can probably look at the land records!

Most of his projects are 'soft' networking type projects. He created links somewhere, created software to solve a problem elsewhere. The actual core research he has done is minimal.

And this is how the West controls you. The really sharp and intelligent people will never be sent back to Pakistan. They are too invaluable. They find slightly above average people who are their intellectual slaves. Who idolize the West and Western values. They are provided opportunities and carefully nurtured so they achieve doctorates, then further propped with awards, recognition, and funding. They go around creating networks and connections. And just by doing that, they come across bright minds who are also impressed by the West. To some extent, they will try to gain influence so young minds follow them. And you have the genesis of the next liberal revolt.

May I ask, he is related to you in anyway? because you attributed the efforts of thousands of institutions and 100's of 1000's graduate in IT to a single persons tells me either you have no freaking idea about how IT works or you have a bias.

IT is the most democratic trade and anyone with a working brain, aptitude for learning, a half decent laptop and a working internet connection can learn and become an entrepreneur. The only giants in IT are the creators of the programming languages that succeeded like C/C++, Java, Python, Kotlin, Web Assembly, Rust etc or frameworks. I have the honour of meeting with quite a few of them and never found Dr Saif anywhere. He is a well qualified expert and no doubt about it but he did quite a few things that have raised eyebrows in country and believe if Dr AQ was not indispensable then Dr Saif not even a mole worth to worry about you will find tens of thousands like him.

I work in IT, I am not related to him, but I appeciate his efforts. Have you read about his views on tech or followed him on social media? It is not easy to find someone who is Pakistani, appreciated in the international community, who has done work in Pakistan and managed to stay unbiased in that work.

Other countries have repeated the systems he has setup. He is not Elon Musk of IT, but he is someone who has given a lot to Pakistan's fledgling IT setup. A lot of the people who are setup in IT in Pakistan today were helped by his tech incubators. He embraced the ideology behind open source and shared experiences with people he could have considered competitors.

Also i disagree with the idea that the only "giants" in IT are people who have created programming languages. Applications and processes have as much impact and can add as much value if not more than a programming language can. The language is a tool, the applications are the product. What is more important? I'd argue both are essential in their place.

Umar Saif came into a fledgling IT sector and help establish it. We should appreciate him for it, rather than make him a political scapegoat.

He played a role but he is neither indispensable nor a unique expert in IT. I know multitudes of IT professionals from Pakistan who will easily replace and surpass him. We need a lot more professionals and should not an individual become stronger than the institutions. As far as his work being replicated by other countries, believe I have written multiple codes that have been shared online and many have used them without even attributing towards me and funniest incident was a new internee was impressing me with her modifications of the code without realising that I wrote that code during the first year of my MS for some analysis ( I can't discuss it here unfortunately). So it is not a big deal buddy.
Just to let you know..Dr Umer Saif has been removed following the credible reports by the agencies..you may hear the details in near future it may never be made public but there are some serious issues. Also he has been on this position for too long and also remember he was limited to PITB i.e. Punjab only. There are some other provinces in Pakistan as well and federal territory.

The Punjab government has decided to remove Dr Umar Saif as the chairman of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).

Talking to Dawn.com, Dr Saif confirmed that the government has approved a summary to replace him, however, no notification has been issued in this regard as yet.

"It is the prerogative of the government to appoint anyone they wish," he said.

"I have worked for the government for seven years. I hope they appoint someone who can take this forward."

They'd better have a decent reason for this, otherwise they've lost my support. I wish the nation well but how will we see betterment when politics is getting in the way of success?!

Current attacks on banks are totally unacceptable. But he doesnt deserved termination as well. Rather decentralization of command chain will do.

Stop making him some kind of a genius. He did alright used basic techniques and created some apps which are good. But they aren't changing anybody's life.
It's very easy to believe the shiny look they presented by spending Billions on Advertisements. But go and visit your local police station or union council and you'll come to know how much IT is really used in Punjab.
And you'll also get to meet the Tech savvy Thanedar.

Well, even if there is no accusation, the govt has all the right to remove a person. It is not his right or govt signed a sovereign guarantee to keep him in this position for the years to come. So it is totally government's privilege to keep him or remove especially since he has been on this job for such a long time as long as they appoint someone on the basis of merit and instead of nepotism. Evidence is only required if govt presses charges against him and punishes him.

Every government removed previous ones to nominate there own ..Its normal course of business..Further he has nothing to do with "these banks security" as he was not heading some Pakistan IT board rather "Punjab IT" and was working under Punjab government not at Federal level.
