Dr. Fauci: Social distancing appears to be working

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said social distancing measures appear to be working — but stressed that the coronavirus pandemic is still a very serious situation.

Fauci cautioned that the US hasn’t seen a turnaround in cases yet, but is hopeful that efforts to push mitigation is possibly slowing the rate.

“What we're starting to see right now is just the inklings. And I don't want to put too much stock on it, because you don't want to get overconfident, you just want to keep pushing in what you're doing. You're starting to see that the daily increases are not in that steep incline, they're starting to be able to possibly flatten out,” Fauci says.

The problem with the America's number is the extremely high positive-test rate.

This rate ranged from 20% to as high as 80% in some of the US states, comparing to single digit in even the heavy hit region like Wuhan and some Europe states.

This suggest: the test are very much insufficient, and even now only mostly critically-illed patients can get test, which is even worse than the situation of the initial breakout stage at Wuhan.

So lets be realistic, the cases in the US will still get exponential growth for a long time, the only limit is the number of test you can conduct.

Fauci's estimation about millions American citizens already get the ill and 200,000 will dead of this is more realistic, if not very optimistic, but well, with the help of warmer and warmer weather, lets hope the number stop at that.

Higher positive rate doesn't indicate if the test is insufficient. It only indicates those who have symptoms are more likely to be infected by COVID. You can test everybody to drag that number down. But for what? Those who have negative test result could still be inflected later. Do you continue testing everybody?

With the same testing policy, when the positive rate goes up, it is a clear signal that the disease is spreading and containment is still necessary. By pursuing lower positive rate, you lose that signal and could get a false sense of security.
