First things first, the theory came from an Austrian jew, and the German bomb program was a joke. Secondly I was saying that many in the U.S (the scientest who developed them in the first place included) wished that we had never started the program after they discovered the horrifying implications of nuclear technology. I am simply saying that very few view the development of the U.S nuclear program as more than an ugly necessity to avoid the invasion of Japan. The reference to Dr. Khan being a crook was that he shared nuclear technology to state supporters of terrorism, and a nation with which the U.S. is still technically at war, not that he "Stole" his plans. The western powers could care less how he came up with a bomb, the issue is he gave it to nations who have a history of acting against the best interest of their people (at least in the view as the U.S) merely for financial gain.
As for Pakistan being Islamic, that rarely comes up in conversations on the subject in the U.S. Of much greater concern to the "Talking Heads" is Pakistan's politically instability, and the fact that it shares a boarder with another nuclear armed country with which it has a history of significant conflict. Its the hundreds of millions of citizens who would die in the dense urban centers of both countries that gives the wider world pause. Recently some analysts have been blabbering about the possibility of "Islamofacists" (Whatever those are) gaining nuclear materials if the situation in Pakistan devolved into a civil war. The people in the U.S's military and intelligence community don't really believe this is possible. It comes from having an independent media geared towards making money. They say silly things to scare people into following the news.
Now for my question, why is Dr. Khan viewed as a hero despite his indiscretions and the seemingly limited utility of a nuclear weapon given Pakistan's position? Neither Pakistan or India could "Win" in a theoretical nuclear war, period. The U.S and Russia figured this out about 50 years ago. Winning in a nuclear war amounts to "only" 50% of your population dying and your major population centers being uninhabitable for about 30 years.
