The Trenton becomes the Jalashva as the Indian Navy jack is raised on the ship.INS Jalashwa (L41) is an amphibious transport dock currently in service with the Indian Navy. Formerly the USS Trenton, it was procured by India for USD 48 million. It entered service in 2007, becoming the second largest ship of the Indian Navy (after the Aircraft Carrier INS Viraat). INS Jalashwa joined the Eastern Fleet (under the Eastern Naval Command) of the Indian Navy upon its arrival at Visakhapatnam naval base on 12th September 2007.

The need for increased amphibious landing capability was felt by the Indian Navy in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, when rescue and humanitarian efforts by th Navy were hampered due to inadequacy of amphibious ships[1]. In early 2006, there were numerous press reports[citation needed] that the Indian Navy was negotiating with the United States for the purchase of this vessel. These reports later turned out to be true when the Indian government announced it would purchase retired Austin class LPD USS Trenton for Rs 2.18 billion ($ 48.44 million). The US Government later revealed it had asked their Indian counterparts to keep this agreement under wraps as they felt it would alarm Non-Proliferation Activists and threaten the passage of the Indo-US Nuclear Deal.[2]

The Indian Navy took possession of the ship on 17 January 2007 in Norfolk, Virginia after signing the transfer agreement by Commodore P. Murugesan, Naval Attaché, Embassy of India, Washington DC and the Rear Admiral Garry E. Hall of US Navy.[3]. The Indian Navy has renamed the USS Trenton as the INS Jalashwa (river horse, or hippopotamus) and plans to keep it at Norfolk Naval Base for refitting until May 2007.[4] Six UH-3 Sea King maritime utility transport helicopters, bought for $39 million[5] will be operated from the ship.[6] Sea Harrier aircraft can be operated from the deck of the ship.[7] The ship is based at Visakhapatnam under the Eastern Naval Command. Captain BS Ahluwalia is the commissioning Commanded Officer. The ship was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 22 June 2007 at the Naval Station Norfolk, in United States. The ship was commissioned by Indian Ambassador to the United States Shri Ronan Sen. This is the first and only transfer of Naval ship from the United States to India.

very simple reason & they know it better" un human, unlogical occupation of afghanistan, bought"15000 Russian troops lost their lives in the Afghan war"
after, strategical nucklear agreement between INDIA & US , RUSSIA is looking for new friends?
surly, pakistan can better , give russia a new kind of frienship...in terms of KEEPING USA FIGHTING EXPENSIVE AFGHANISTAN WAR!:tup:

Not really a fact.

Russia supported the pact and supported India to get the NSG waiver. In fact it works to their advantage as they could not pull it off without the USA.

If you guys build a relationship with Russia it will be because you can bring something to the table, it won't be because of the India-USA relationship.

Indo-Russia relations remain strong and strategic. Nothing is gonna happen to them.

You are not seeing the big picture dude

you have to say dude we used mixed waipens indian russian usa and oyhers also not we never buy any arms frrom us thats my point was dude

hum ... well , i guss the lost of trust from russia, oppourtunist behaviour by india, cant be justyfy any means, india was and is trying hard to get the status of veto power, as india got fed up russia, it is playing with US.
Nuckler deal between india & US , also can be seen through that angle too, but yes you are right !"it won't be because of the India-USA relationship".

we ceertnly have a sellable product on the battle grounds in afghanistan, & its the real deal here, trust me! if we can make a u-turn , in 2001, we can do it now too.
plz remember that, we are the nation, which made A-bomb by our self, & also sold it to many's ,we can do what ever , whenever its needed.;)

There is no opportunistic behavior by India or Russia here. And no, India or Russia did not get fed up with each other.

Its just expanding the options on both our parts once the cold war is over and the earlier sentimental relationship transformed to a more hard nosed one. You know earlier the Soviet Polit Bureau would clear any arms transfer to India on fast track, even before it got to Warsaw pact countries, now there is no Polit bureau. Things have changed for both of us.

In Afghanistan, do enlightem me what you can sell to Russia from a practical standpoint. Frankly I don't see a single damn thing that is of shared interest to both of you for which either of you would take "panga" with the USA.
