ISLAMABAD: The Punjab Forum, emboldened by the refusal of international donors to finance Diamer-Bhasha Dam, has asked the government to think seriously about construction of another big dam called Kalabagh.
“We have already lost over $36 billion due to delay in construction of Kalabagh Dam. The government must now consider construction of the dam since both the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and World Bank have no objection to funding the project,” said Baig Raj, President of the Punjab Forum in a statement issued here on Friday.
However, the ADB had gone back on its commitment to fund Diamer-Bhasha Dam while the World Bank had already refused to provide money, he said.
A four-year delay in funding added $500 million per year to the $12 billion project and deprived the country of $8 billion in annual benefits at the rate of $2 billion per year, said Raj.
The construction of Kalabagh Dam has been a longstanding dispute among provinces, which forced the government to abandon the project.
“Opposition to Kalabagh is not based on technical grounds, rather it is a political issue being raised to destabilise the country,” Raj said.
Expressing sorrow over loss of life and property in current floods in Nowshera, he stressed that the only way to save the city in future was construction of Kalabagh Dam. He held the Awami National Party (ANP) responsible for the losses as it was one of the biggest opponents of the dam.
Raj was of the view that Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh would not turn dry after the dam was constructed, rather these provinces would become barren in absence of this mega project.
“Bhasha Dam will not help irrigate agriculture land as no canal can be made in the hilly terrain while Kalabagh will irrigate seven million acres of land and produce 3,800 megawatts of electricity,” he said.

Its simple

When you have continous flow of water it goes waster in sea ... someone explain that to Wadera

.
Large water amounts of water is required t flow into the sea or leave the river system at a rapid pase to combat salinity. Open river systems are also required to help in the fish migration, as well as dolphin.

Personally I don't like dams because they are very damaging to the environment. We have loads of dry river beds, we should fill first in the case of a flood just needs better management. But if in the end when all is said and done if there is risk to human life, then go on ahead.

But please focus on geothermal energy it's a great resource.

Since my childhood I am hearing and reading news of kalabagh dam conflicts and its advantages. Why dont government bring on experts on national TV , discuss the pros and cons of this project? If it is good for country, just eminent domain power to kick out everybody in the project way like they use in west.

Kalabagh is more like a political issue . These idiots are good for nothing . Punjab Govt is even ready to sacrifice the canal from Kalabagh dam but even then the idiots (Anti-Pakistan) people from both Sindh and NWFP are opposing it for no reason.

Do u know that we could have saved Pakistan from the floods which destroyed everything in it way a few year back if we had Kalabagh Dam ? But let us just carried away by the fact that our Govt is not intrested in doing anything that will benefit Pakistan in long run these idiot bereaucrates and politicans are doing their best to ruin this country.

. .
kalabagh dam is not gonna build untill these waderas are sitting on our heads. plz some body kill all of them. Talibans kill innocent people but if they kill these wadeas I will support them

.
Those who are blocking Bhasha dam are NOT going to give you funds for Kalabagh dam either.

Explain this to ANP, which is anti-Pakistan party from day one. Its leader preferred to be buried in Afghanistan, yet people vote for such idiots.

Actually technical people and bureaucrats are all for it. There is no provincial/technical issue with the dam. The biggest hurdle is ANP.

ANP has no powers. The individual politicians' land is going to be eaten up by the dam hence the opposition
