PRESIDENT Donald Trump fumes at Pakistan, saying it thinks US leaders are fools.

ISLAMABAD / WASHINGTON: Ties between Pakistan and the United States, strained for the past several weeks, suffered a New Year setback on Monday when President Donald Trump accused Islamabad of being a liar, inviting a series of sharp responses from the Pakistani leadership.

In his first message, directed at a foreign nation in the new year, the president pledged to change the nature of a relationship he claimed was based on “nothing but lies and deceit”.

“We are MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, and much faster than anyone thought possible,” he wrote.

At 4:12am, on Monday, Mr Trump tweeted his warning to Pakistan: “The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools.”

Foreign minister says Islamabad will not do more after US president calls it ‘liar’

He said: “They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!”

The message was retweeted and liked by tens of thousands of his followers.

It took only an hour for Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif to come up with a rejoinder. “We will respond to President Trump’s tweet shortly Inshallah...Will let the world know the truth...difference between facts & fiction,” he tweeted.

The timing of Mr Trump’s tweet — at 4 in the morning and more than 12 hours after his last tweet — has caused much speculation in the US capital, with some linking it to reports of a further escalation in India-Pakistan tensions.

In a related development reflecting on worsening ties, the US ambassador in Pakistan was summoned to the Foreign Office and a strong protest over Mr Trump’s remarks was lodged with him, informed sources told Dawn.

Mr Trump’s tweets come a few days after Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said Pakistan had done enough and it was time for the United States and Afghanistan to do more. He was referring to accusation by the US and Afghanistan regarding the presence of militant bases in Pakistan.

He urged the US to “check India’s anti-Pakistan role not only from inside of Afghanistan but also through the enhanced and increased ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary”.

His news briefing last week was considered the strongest-ever reaction from Islamabad since Washington began alluding to the possibility of unilateral action.

According to sources, Foreign Minister Asif soon after Mr Trump’s tirade against Pakistan held a meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to discuss the situation.

In an interview with a private news channel in the evening, Khawaja Asif said Pakistan had already done enough. “We have already said no more [to the Americans] so Trump’s no more is of no importance now,” he added.

“We are ready to publicly provide details of the US aid that has been received by the country,” said the minister, adding that Mr Trump was disappointed with the US defeat in Afghanistan and was accusing Pakistan in retaliation.

He suggested the US should try and negotiate with the Taliban in Afghanistan instead of using the armed forces.

Defence Minister Khurram Dastagir Khan in a separate tweet said: “Pak as anti-terror ally has given free to US: land & air communication, military bases & intel cooperation that decimated Al-Qaeda over last 16 yrs, but they have given us nothing but invective & mistrust. They overlook cross-border safe havens of terrorists who murder Pakistanis.”

Khawaja Asif said: “The claim by Trump regarding the funds, if we account for it, they include reimbursements too for the services rendered by Pakistan.”

“Our land, roads, rail and, other different kinds of services were used for which we were reimbursed. A proper audit took place for the reimbursements,” he said. He asked the US to hold accountable those who failed in Afghanistan.

He also said that only Afghanistan’s neighbours can find a peaceful solution for regional peace and security.

Asked as to what would be Islamabad’s response if the US carried out drone strikes in Pakistan’s settled areas, he said: “The country will defend its sovereignty”.

He said the foreign policy direction is dictated only by the national interest.

A senior military official when contacted said it was time for a united front and single national narrative. He recalled that the ISPR chief in his presser on Dec 28 had said, “we are receiving threats but once it comes to Pakistan we all are one. No more do more for anyone. We fought two imposed wars”.

The ISPR spokesperson had clarified that the Coalition Support Fund, received from the US, is reimbursement of money spent for operations in support of the coalition for regional peace. “Had we not supported, Al Qaeda would not have been defeated,” he had stated.

Another source said the federal cabinet will hold an emergent meeting today (Tuesday) to ponder over the situation arising out of the harsh remarks. A national response is expected after the cabinet meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Without the Americans during both the wars... Allies would never have won... Most of the Europe would have spoken German today.
My Grandfather, a Sargent major, fought in both 1st and 2nd world wars in the British Indian army. He had won more medals for valor than the whole Israeli army combined. He fought the Germans in North Africa and gave them a good kicking, a mighty warrior he was, so I can say he won the 1st and 2nd World war, because without him the Germans could not have been defeated. He used to tell us the stories about how viciously and bravely he and his soldiers would fight as the English would send them into direct head on conflict with Rommel's forces. After the Indian forces had defeated Rommel's forces but suffered huge casualties in the process the English would send their flag and camera to tell the world how the English won.

President Donald Trump signaled Monday that he was prepared to cut off aid to Pakistan if the country failed to cooperate with the US.
"The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools," he wrote. "They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!"
Trump announced his administration's plans for the continuing US military engagement in Afghanistan in August, which specifically called on Pakistan to do more to fight terrorism.

Taliban is just a boogeyman today.

ISIS-K is the real monster there.

.
Pakistan should withdraw from WOT. We have done enough for others, work on fencing the border and let the U.S deal with Afghanistan.

It's hilarious how the Americans keep harping on about safe havens for Afghan Taliban in Pakistan but are curiously mum about the safe havens that Pakistani Taliban have found right next to the Pakistani border on Afghan side.

You're not fooling anyone except from getting some dihati chaddis up tight.
Absolutely fence the border its not our fault US sits on its arse in Afghanistan and cant control cross border movement and has surrendered half of Afghanistan to Taliban

Unless the US can sanction spares and deny upgrades to military equipment, there nothing to worry about for Pakistan. Many world leaders have made similar statements but nothing much comes about.
Even if they do that we wont do what they ask of us we wont disturb our regions again just because of US

It's other way around, they have to dealt with you as long as they stays in Afghan.
They can stay for ever shit wont improve in Afghanistan because they dont want it to improve they just handed over half of Afghanistan to taliban

Taliban is just a boogeyman today.

ISIS-K is the real monster there.
Same shit in new chamkili packing atleast in Afghanistan just with different warlords this time

.
I still find it unbelievable that many Pakistanis still consider the US a friend or even an ally! How deluded does one have to be? The US has placed sanction after sanction on Pakistan for going against its regional poodle in India and only backing down in the case of absolute necessity. Even then they have been involved in indirect warfare. Awaam is on drugs.

.
US is in decline? Do these writers live in caves or something?

They are manufacturing new aircraft carriers and lot of other stuff. They have orchestrated electric automobile revolution across the world and broken the monopoly of OPEC with shale revolution in the process. They also achieved battlefield success in the Middle East.

Unfortunately, global peace is not in their best interests because how will US get customers for its weapons then?

These writers are as stupid as their articles.

. .
Furthermore , it has led to the blocking of donations to JuD etc.

And Modi ******** early morning today!!

I mean, we are linking everything to Trump's tweet, right?

How strange, the whole world fought but the Americans won, what a load of nonsense from the beginning:
"After winning the second world war, the United States led the creation of a new rules-based architecture"

Let's give credit where it is due. Without US the world would look different today. The involvement of US was the deciding factor in the victory of allies and it was mostly US that saved the day for the so called 'allied nations'.

We can say that for quite a few countries: GB, India, Russia, China, France, etc "Without XXX the world would look different today."

The US turns a blatant blind eye to Indian terror activities on its side of the Afghan border. It has allowed India an open vacuum to operate freely and strike at will. The US has provided a covert a license to India to carry out terror attacks against Pakistani interests. Yet, the US continues to play the victim and blame Pakistan for doing not enough. Nuristan and other Afghan hotspots are known to harbor hardcore anti-Pakistan elements which plot and carry out terrorist attacks against Pakistan. Anti-Pakistan elements are provided a sanctuary in Afghanistan. It is beyond ridiculous how the US continues to press Pakistan to do more.

Tens of thousands of innocent Pakistanis have died since joining the US war. The economic, human and materialistic cost is astronomical. The US shows no respect and regard for Pakistani sacrifices. On the contrary, it belittles and disrespects our sacrifices.

Pakistan has done its part. Pakistan continues to do its part by fencing the border and carrying out operations against terror outfits. Worse, the US has never responded to Pakistani request to jointly monitor and safeguard the Pak Afghan border. Instead it continues to bash Pakistan for not doing enough on its side.

The US also shamelessly interferes in Pakistani affairs and undermines mega projects such as CPEC. The US is hostile and insincere to Pakistan's economic well-being. The US gives India preferential treatment by presenting nuclear tech and fuels an arms race within the region. The US breaks international norms to facilitate India. Yet, it has issues with Pakistan's nuclear deterrent.

The Americans need to be told bluntly how things stand. The US is in confrontational mood ever since electing Trump. The blame game has intensified and Pakistan cannot afford to sit idle or respond weakly. Time has come to convey the message in a convincing manner. The Americans need to understand that the carrot and stick approach is outdated and has frankly never worked for them. Cooperation can only be achieved through understanding and without double games in Afghanistan. Unless Pakistan’s legitimate concerns aren’t addressed there can be no mutual understanding and cooperation.

Enough is enough. There is only one way to adequately respond to US bullying. If the US continues this nasty behavior we need to start off by shutting the supply routes. If the US persists with its ugly behavior other measures need to be taken to make our intentions crystal clear.

Additionally, Pakistan should continue to work closely with important regional players like Turkey, China, Iran and Russia. Our narrative has to be stronger and more aggressive. We need to have a more confrontational approach.

America is today a weaker nation with Trump as its leader. In the eyes of many nations, including staunch US allies, Trumpland is a morally bankrupt and a bully nation. It is simply put a villain. It has lost credibility on the world stage. The US continues to seek hostility with a whole host of nations. Pakistan happens to be among these nations. Pakistan needs to make most of this opportunity and continue to be assertive. We need to make a strong case and stand our ground. Pakistan won’t get a better opportunity.

Trump just said, Happy new year to pakistan.

Happy new year will be when we cower to American demands. So far we have shown the middle finger so yeah a happy new year to the Americans as well LOL
